Are you using snow leopard or lion. I'm using snow leopard and I can't get it
to work either. I try to go to the date and press VO shift \ but it doesn't
work. Any suggestions you have learned?

In SL the VoiceOver command is VO-Shift-\ or as it is sometimes stated
VO-Shift-|.
this should take care of it.
