A little bit of digging revealed that this is from missing Microsoft C++ libraries, and most often this can be 'remedied' by installing the .NET framework. After installing that, rebooting and re-installing the flasher app, it worked fine. My device is currently flashing as i type.

I downloaded both the flasher app and the firmware. On my winxp box, the flasher app appears to be broken. When i launch it, i get "The application has failed to initialize properly(0xc135)"tom w wolf
