Every group created on Mahara should get a shortname assigned to it
automatically if it wasn't created by CSV file so that administrators
can change them via CSV in the future. Currently, you'd have to create
the groups from scratch via CSV to get that value in. The shortname
could be displayed to

The groups were created manually and until I attempted to add users in this way
they had all been added via the mahara members interface within each group -

Groups aren't really assigned to institutions in Mahara. Did you upload
your groups via CSV as site admin or institution admin? There might be a
difference. I remember that when I created groups via CSV as institution
admin, I could only add users from my own institution. But other than
