After a supposedly clean install of the latest mailman,
I get this error when adding a list (even the initial
mailman list):

When I saw this response, I thought it a bug... I have my lists set to
"private", only list members can see who is on the list, and the
server sent me a list of subscribers ACK!
Then I tried it from an account that is not subscribed, and got:

Private list: only members may see
Type mailq and see if messages are queued up for delivery. If they
are, the problem may be that you have not inserted the crontab entries
for the user mailman.

A simpler solution would be to use backup mail servers. It would
be fairly hard (IMHO) to keep multiple mailman installs in sync.
I would use the main DSL server to actually run the list, but add
in 2 other MX servers to "hold" your mail until your line comes
back...

this cron entry can be commented out or removed. Not sure why you
are getting the error, but commenting out the cron entry is a

can be easily managed in sendmail. Read up on spam fitering
(spammers db file).

but if you want to do it right, youi would most likely have to do

From the crontab comments, it seems to be a method to send/receive

I just tried to set one up... You are right, there does not seem to
be any "good" options for doing announce only.
Here is one possibility, under "Details" of addresses of members accepted
for posting (field below "restrict posting to members"):
