[Mailman-Users] Doubts about -request

2005-04-28 Thread Daniel Tygel
Hi friends,

my name is Daniel Tygel, from Brasil. I'm the administrator of a list
which is powered by mailman (great software!!). I'm having now some
problems which I really cannot understand (my list is called
[EMAIL PROTECTED]):

If someone sends a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the
subject help, it works allright, giving all the commands. But if
someone sends a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with subject
subscribe, simply NOTHING happens! What can be wrong? Is it some
server issue or some misconfiguration?

Thanks a lot for any help folks,

   Daniel Tygel

[Mailman-Users] question regarding cron

2005-04-28 Thread Alex at Idoia
Hello,
I have installed mailman on my debian woody. I have checked recently my
/var/log/auth.log and they are poluated by a cron that is being
executed by mailman every minutes of every day:
# */5 * * * * list[ -x /usr/bin/python -a -f
/usr/lib/mailman/cron/gate_news ] /usr/bin/python
/usr/lib/mailman/cron/gate_news
* * * * *   list[ -x /usr/bin/python -a -f
/usr/lib/mailman/cron/qrunner ] /usr/bin/python
/usr/lib/mailman/cron/qrunner
Can you explain me this ?
Is this really necessary ?
Can we prevent it from being printed in my /auth.log ?
Thanks alot

So is the other guy. That's not enough to apply the law of large

Are you using a RedHat-supplied Python? Did you build Mailman yourself?

Re: [Mailman-Users] Installation problem: 500 internal server error

2005-04-28 Thread RT
Jim Tittsler wrote:
Are you trying to use Apache's suEXEC feature? It conflicts with the
normal Mailman installation. You will need to make sure the cgi-bin
directory is not group writable. (Once over that hurdle, you will
probably then have to make sure that the files in cgi-bin don't have the
SGID bit set, and are owned by the correct user/group so that suEXEC can
set the group for the scripts.)
Well, I'll be *!?**!!, this (almost) got it working; thanks. It turned
out to be a litle more complicated...

Problem 1: my 'ISP', for want of a better word, enables suEXEC on
Apache, and I obviously can't change that (aside: doesn't everyone run
Apache/suEXEC? If not, why? And surely most mailman users are in the
same situation that I'm in - I don't have a real internet connection,
and I rely on someone else's virtual server, on which I don't get a root
password?)

After following both your instructions, I got a web page, but with this
error:

Group mismatch error. Mailman expected the CGI
wrapper script to be executed as group web, but
the system's web server executed the CGI script as
group mailman. Try tweaking the web server to run the
script as group web, or re-run configure,
providing the command line option `--with-cgi-gid=mailman'.
Ok, I had configured with '--with-cgi-gid=web', as per INSTALL (Apache
runs as 'web'). So Apache suEXEC'ed the scripts as 'mailman', so
defeating the configuration option. As a fix/hack, I changed the
owner/group of everything in cgi-bin to web/web, to prevent Apache
suEXEC'ing. This got me further; as far as problem 2, in fact.

Problem 2: Apache now runs the scripts as 'web', which is what mailman
expects, but I now get another problem: mailman claims to hit an
internal bug. At the end of the traceback I get:

IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/local/home/mailman/mailman-2.1.5/logs/error'
Ok, mailman is running as web and wants to write into a directory owned
by mailman, and can't. So I run

/usr/sbin/usermod -G admin, mailman web
And everything springs into life; I can now get listinfo and admin
pages, complete with logos.

But *none* of this is in the installation instructions, unless I've
missed something. And, this isn't my day job, and I'm worried that this
isn't secure. Is it a good idea to run mailman's scripts with Apache's
permissions?

How does everyone else manage to install this? Would someone mind
updating INSTALL?

Thanks -
RT

[Mailman-Users] listinfo sometimes not displaying public lists?

2005-04-28 Thread RT
I found this issue covered in mailman-developers in Nov.2000
(http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-developers/2000-November/007744.html),
for an old version. however, I've got it in the current version and the
old answer doesn't seem to be relevant.

I've just installed Mailman and I have one public list. The list is
normally *not* visible in mailman/info, although sometimes it is
visible. However, it *is* visible at mailman/admin. The strange thing is
that I can (occasionally) make it visible in mailman/listinfo by doing
something unrelated (just logging in or logging out, possibly) in the
admin pages, but I'm not quite sure what.

Any ideas?
Many thanks -
RT

[Mailman-Users] Limitting age of held messages.

2005-04-28 Thread Matt Ruzicka
We've got an issue with our data/ dir getting quite large due to a large
number of held messages waiting for admin attention. Since we have a fair
number of lists with almost as many admins I'm looking for a solution
that will automatically prune down the held messages.

Reading through the FAQ I found this entry that talking about deleting all
held messages for a specific list.

http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?req=showfile=faq01.012.htp

This isn't quite what I'm looking for because I do not want to remove ALL
message, just messages that have been sitting around unattended for a long
period of time.

At the end of that FAQ there is mention of a third party patch that allows
you to specify how many days to hold pending messages and to automatically
discard when they expires.

I'm a bit wary of using a third party patch since I don't want to
introduce possible complications related to upgrades or lag if there were
to be a security issue with mailman itself. I do see that this patch is
supposedly a revamp of another solution that runs from cron, but it has
not been developed in a couple years.

Is anyone else having this issue and are you using this patch or some
other solution to solve this? Is there a way to solve this problem in
the more recent versions of Mailman that I am not seeing?

Thank you.

[Mailman-Users] Mailman install -- she no working day 3.

2005-04-28 Thread Ignacio Valdes
Hi, I'm trying to get Mailman working on a FreeBSD system X 3 days
now. I have followed the install document very carefully, apache and
mailman are loaded and running. However, I cannot get to anything. I
have the following in my vhosts.conf file:

VirtualHost *:80
  ServerName mailman.linuxmednews.com
  DocumentRoot /usr/local/mailman/data
/VirtualHost
VirtualHost *:80
  ServerName test.linuxmednews.com
  DocumentRoot /usr/local/www/data
/VirtualHost
...
I put test-cgi into /usr/local/mailman/cgi-bin/ and when I try
http://mailman.linuxmednews.com/cgi-bin/test-cgi, it works. However,
none of the other mailman executables in that directory do anything
and I certainly cannot get the usual form of mailman URL's
(http://linuxmednews.com/mailman/... to work at all. I'm running this
alongside Zope and I am running out of time to work on this.

Management... Membership List... page? That controls the
 format of the
list digests (allowing you to select either plain text or MIME
formatted digests). You can set the default on the Digest options...
page. It does not refer to HTML formatted email.

If you want users to receive HTML formatted messages, you
 will want to
mail HTML messages (or multipart-alternative) messages to the
 list, and
make sure you have configured Content filtering... not to remove them
or convert text/html parts into plain text. (You may also
 want to make
sure the msg_footer is an empty string.)

[Mailman-Users] Moved lists, URL's all fouled up.

2005-04-28 Thread Ignacio Valdes
Hi, I have lists that were originally configured for
maillist.linuxmednews.com now I would like them to be configured for
www.linuxmednews.com I've changed things under the covers and I can
get to the main admin screen at
http://www.linuxmednews.com/mailman/admin/mednews, login okay, but
when I try to get to a submenu, it tries to change
www.linuxmednews.com to maillist.linuxmednews.org which gives a
resource not found, naturally because it doesn't exist. How/where can
I change the lists old internal references to go to
www.linuxmednews.com not maillist.linuxmednews.org?

Thanks,

Re: [Mailman-Users] How do I default to HTML, not plain text emails?

2005-04-28 Thread Stephen J. Turnbull
Daevid == Daevid Vincent [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Daevid Aahh.. Okay. I guess I misunderstood what that checkbox
Daevid was for. Seems silly that one would have a choice for the
Daevid digests and not for regular emails.

You don't get a choice of HTML or not for digests. You get a choice
of formats for packaging several posts into one mail message. If the
original posts contained HTML and that was not stripped, then it will
be passed through. This may work better if the user chooses the MIME
format for digests, but as far as I know both digest formats pass HTML
just fine.

Daevid I thought the old mailman allowed a user to choose if they
Daevid got the regular emails as plain or html. Hmm.

No. What you may have been observing is that multipart/alternative
messages that contain BOTH plaintext and HTML versions of the same
content were viewed as plaintext by members who set their MUAs to
prefer plaintext, and were viewed as HTML by members who prefer HTML.
Since the message contains both versions, the member can (and does)
choose AFTER receiving the message.

In Mailman 2.1, it is (finally!) possible for the list admin to refuse
and/or strip out HTML BEFORE it gets sent out by the list. Mailman is
not capable of reformatting a message as HTML. Senders must do that
themselves.

[Mailman-Users] List sends but does not receive, using Qmail.

2005-04-28 Thread Ignacio Valdes
Okay, things are looking good on my install. However, I'm using Qmail

fine, but a test message never makes it. This is on FreeBSD with
Mailman installed with port. The Mailman documentation for this looks
daunting. Any help is appreciated.
