 I mean, the user will see A B C D E F .. and so on.
If s/he clicks on A, then all mail-lists beggining with letter A will be

 Has anyone accomplished this feature?

[Mailman-Users] Integrating Namazu with Mailman

Hello,

I am trying to integrate the namazu search with mailman archives.

I am able to get namzu list out the messages containg the search string.
But, when I click on the message, it just come back with the error:

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable
to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying

On checking the apache/error_log, I see the following message that has some

[Mailman-Users] Email accounts for bounces, admin, confirm, etc

2006-01-23 Thread Elvis Fernandes
Hello folks,

I have created a mail list unix_sysadmin, and this email account is
approved by my IT team.
I use sendmail, and in my /etc/aliases, looks like this.

## unix_sysadmin mailing list
unix_sysadmin: |/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman post
unix_sysadmin
unix_sysadmin-admin:|/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman admin
unix_sysadmin
unix_sysadmin-bounces: |/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman bounces
unix_sysadmin
unix_sysadmin-confirm: |/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman confirm
unix_sysadmin
unix_sysadmin-join: |/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman join
unix_sysadmin
unix_sysadmin-leave:|/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman leave
unix_sysadmin
unix_sysadmin-owner:|/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman owner
unix_sysadmin
unix_sysadmin-request: |/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman request
unix_sysadmin
unix_sysadmin-subscribe:|/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman subscribe
unix_sysadmin
unix_sysadmin-unsubscribe: |/disk1/mailman/mail/mailman unsubscribe
unix_sysadmin

My question is regarding the unix_sysadmin-admin, unix_sysadmin-bounces,
unix_sysadmin-confirm, etc.
Do I need to get the IT team to create seperate email accounts for
unix_sysadmin-admin, unix_sysadmin-bounces, unix_sysadmin-confirm, etc?
I plan to create a bunch of other mail lists. So, does email accounts need
to be created for each -admin, -bounces, -confirm.
Or, is there a way that all the email lists -admin, -bounces, -confirm can
be consolidated into a single email account?

Could someone share their idea's.

Thanks

Re: [Mailman-Users] Email accounts for bounces, admin, confirm, etc

Hi Neilrey, Mark,

Thanks for your replies.

In my case, the company mail server is being maintained by the IT team, and
the mailman server is being maintained by me.

So from what you tell me, the /etc/aliases need to be updated in the company
mail server, right? Currently, the /etc/aliases are updated only in the
mailman server.

When I email to unix_sysadmin-bounces, it comes back with permanent fatal
errors.
My theory for this error is: when I email unix_sysadmin-bounces, it goes to
the company email server. Since this email server does not have

I appreciate all the responses for this mail ist. This place rocks!

That complicates things considerably. What you need is for mail from
the outside world to any of the 10 addresses per list to be delivered
to your server. How this can be accomplished on the company mail
server depends on what MTA runs there. It could probably be done with
10 email accounts per list, each with it's own .forward or other
mechanism to redirect the mail to the Mailman server. It could
probably also be done with aliases on the company server, or possibly
 programmatically.

If the company mail server, via NTFS or whatever, could see the list of
directories in Mailman's lists/ directory, it would be able to
progammatically determine whether any particular address is a valid
Mailman address and act accordingly (assuming it is progammable to
that degree), but the IT people probably wouldn't like that since you
could create a list with the same name as a company email user and
 'intercept' that mail.

It seems the 'best' solution is to use a separate email domain for
Mailman, e.g. lists.company.com or mailman.company.com and publish an
MX DNS record to get that domain delivered to the Mailman server.

The amail-list is setup so that non-members can send e-mail to this list.

Does mailman have a limit for the number of users that a non-mail list

Can someone share their experiences.

That's set on a per list basis under privacy options--recipient
filters. Set the number to whatever you like, or zero for no limit.
It doesn't matter whether the sender is a member o the list or not.

 No, but see

The user level subsciption option *Avoid duplicate copies of messages?

Right. This only controls whether or not you receive a post from the

 Admin-Privacy options...-Subscription rules-unsubscribe_policy = Yes

unsubscribe_policy (privacy): Is the list moderator's approval required
for unsubscription requests? (No is recommended)

When members want to leave a list, they will make an unsubscription
request, either via the web or via email. Normally it is best for you
to allow open unsubscriptions so that users can easily remove
themselves from mailing lists (they get really upset if they can't get
 off lists!).

For some lists though, you may want to impose moderator approval before
an unsubscription request is processed. Examples of such lists include
a corporate mailing list that all employees are required to be members
 of.

The patch you installed added the following four lines around line 1035
 in Mailman/Archiver/HyperArch.py.

 date = float(date)
 date = time.gmtime(date)
 date = time.strftime(%b %d %Y - %H:%M:%S,date)
 date = CGIescape(date, self.lang)

 If you change

 date = time.gmtime(date)
 to
 date = time.localtime(date)

 you'll get local time.

[Mailman-Users] Archive browsing question

Is this a correct statement?

Now, there must be a way to block non-members to browse the archives of

Making the archives private with a username / passwd access will be okay to

Only if the archives are public.

Now, there must be a way to block non-members to browse the archives of

Make the archive private on the list's Archiving Options page. This
will remove the symlinks from the archives/public/ directory and force
archive access to be via http://example.com/mailman/private. The links
on admin and listinfo pages will use the private url, so everything
will work except perhaps for old links that people have saved or

Re: [Mailman-Users] Archive browsing question

Okay, going to http://example.com/mailman/private/mail-list/ does work.

Where did the http://example.com/mailman/private/mail-list URL come
from? Was this a link on a Mailman page or did you just type it?

I typed it. When I go to http://example.com/mailman/private the screen tells
me You must specify a list. So I specified mail-list. Now I know that the
trailing / needs to be there.

Thanks!

 Try going to http://example.com/mailman/private/mail-list/

If the URL doesn't end in a slash, the browser will think the relative
link in the archives is relative to the previous slash.

[Mailman-Users] Pipermail question

2005-12-15 Thread Elvis Fernandes
Hello,

Thanks to all the responses from this mail list.
I was able to successfully setup mailman, and have migrated one list
already.

There is one feature that I would like to have on the Pipermail.
In the default way that I have setup mailman-pipermail, the emails can be
browsed by Thread - Subject - Author - Date.
If I select anyone of the above, I see the emails in the Subject - Author
format.
Is there a way to see it in the Subject - Author - Datestamp format ?

Basically, all the index on thread/subject/author/date doesn't have the date
stamp on each of the individual messages. Can the date-stamp be shown
against each of the messages on mailman - pipermail.

Thanks

Anyways, I have posted a request in sourceforge too.

Anyone who can run the newlist command as the mailman user (or root)
can use it to create a list, and can do pretty much anything else to
mailman, but this is a pretty tight restriction, at least on most
 machines.

Not so for web access, thus the list create page requires a password -
List creator's (authentication) password: (the last entry on the
form). Are you providing either the site password or the special list
creator password (both generated by bin/mmsitepass) in this entry?

The MTA that originated that message is being asked to deliver a
message received from a source outside its local domain to a
destination also outside it's local domain and has been configured not
 to allow that.

This is an MTA configuration issue (or perhaps a DNS issue or possibly
Mailman using a non-local outgoing MTA issue). It is not clear to me
whether Mailman is even involved here. Does this message come on
attempt to post that doesn't even reach the list or an attempt to
 deliver from the list?

It seems something is wrong with Python or with the shell. I still have
no idea what, but try running it interactively. I.e.,

Actually, this whole step strictly isn't required as each module will
be compiled when first imported anyway, but pre-compiling will speed
up the initial operation of Mailman a bit.

 Presumably your MUA split
 /opt/local/bin/python -c 'from compileall import *;
 compile_dir(/mailman/mailman/Mailman)'
 It should be one line.

Your Python interpreter at /opt/local/bin/python doesn't seem to
 recognize 'from'.

What happens if you interactively give the command

 /opt/local/bin/python

and then in response to the '' prompt, type

 from compileall import *

If you get an error, something is seriously wrong with your Python
 installation.

It is acting as if there is white space between the ' and from. The
 line in Makefile is

 $(PYTHON) -c 'from compileall import *;
 compile_dir($(DESTDIR)$(prefix)/Mailman)'

(above is folded, but it's all one line in Makefile) which becomes in
 your case

 /opt/local/bin/python -c 'from compileall import *;
 compile_dir(/mailman/mailman/Mailman)'

(again folded). You could try just giving that command manually. I'm at
a loss to understand why it isn't working.

If the command above works manually, then 'make update' will finish the
job since that's all that's left from 'make install' after the above.

[Mailman-Users] Unable to create new mail list

2005-09-20 Thread Elvis Fernandes
Hello,
I am setting up a brand new mailman server.
After doing per the documentation, I tried creating a testing test mail
list.
However, I get an error that says illegal list name: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Any idea's on what I am missing?
Here is the string.
 Thanks
Elvis

# ./newlist testing
Enter the email of the person running the list: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Initial testing password:
Create a new, unpopulated mailing list.

Usage: ./newlist [options] [listname [listadmin-addr [admin-password]]]

Options:

-l language
--language=language
Make the list's preferred language `language', which must be a two
letter language code.

-u urlhost
--urlhost=urlhost
Gives the list's web interface host name.

-e emailhost
--emailhost=emailhost
Gives the list's email domain name.

-q/--quiet
Normally the administrator is notified by email (after a prompt) that
their list has been created. This option suppresses the prompt and
notification.

-h/--help
Print this help text and exit.

You can specify as many of the arguments as you want on the command line:
you will be prompted for the missing ones.

Every Mailman list has two parameters which define the default host name for
outgoing email, and the default URL for all web interfaces. When you
configured Mailman, certain defaults were calculated, but if you are running
multiple virtual Mailman sites, then the defaults may not be appropriate for
the list you are creating.

You also specify the domain to create your new list in by typing the command
like so:

newlist --urlhost=www.mydom.ain mylist

where `www.mydom.ain' should be the base hostname for the URL to this
virtual
hosts's lists. E.g. with this setting people will view the general list
overviews at http://www.mydom.ain/mailman/listinfo. Also,
www.mydom.ainhttp://www.mydom.ain/
should be a key in the VIRTUAL_HOSTS mapping in mm_cfg.py/Defaults.py if
the email hostname to be automatically determined.

If you want the email hostname to be different from the one looked up by the
VIRTUAL_HOSTS or if urlhost is not registered in VIRTUAL_HOSTS, you can
specify
`emailhost' like so:

newlist --urlhost=www.mydom.ain --emailhost=mydom.ain mylist

where `mydom.ain' is the mail domain name. If you don't specify emailhost
but
urlhost is not in the virtual host list, then mm_cfg.DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST will
be used for the email interface.

For backward compatibility, you can also specify the domain to create your
new list in by spelling the listname like so:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

where www.mydom.ain http://www.mydom.ain/ is used for `urlhost' but it
will also be used for
`emailhost' if it is not found in the virtual host table. Note that
'--urlhost' and '--emailhost' have precedence to this notation.

If you spell the list name as just `mylist', then the email hostname will be
taken from DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST and the url will be taken from DEFAULT_URL (as
defined in your Defaults.py file or overridden by settings in mm_cfg.py).

Note that listnames are forced to lowercase.
Illegal list name: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Mailman-Users] Saving attachments

2005-09-16 Thread Elvis Fernandes
Mark,
 Thanks for yur response.
I am using 2.1.6.
However, i do not find mention of SCRUBBER_DONT_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME and
SCRUBBER_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME_EXTENSION in the Defaults.py and mm_cfg.py
files.
I also searched the mailman FAQ's and do not find any mention of these
settings.
Anyways, I tried this in mm_cfg.py
SCRUBBER_DONT_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME = No
And restarted mailman.
I still am not able to save an email attachment with the same name as the
attachment.
 Any ideas?
 Thanks
Elvis

On Mailman 2.1.5 and earlier, no. On 2.1.6 see the Defaults.py and
 mm_cfg.py variables SCRUBBER_DONT_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME and
 SCRUBBER_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME_EXTENSION.

Yes I am using 2.1.6 and now I find these variables in Defaults.py.
I updated the following in mm_cfg.py
# Refer Defaults.py
SCRUBBER_DONT_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME = False
# Refer Defaults.py
SCRUBBER_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME_EXTENSION = False
 And restarted mailman (/etc/init.d/mailman restart)
I send a new email attachment, but still am unable to save the attachment
with the same name.
What am I missing?

 From the 2.1.6 Defaults.py

 # Mailman.Handlers.Scrubber uses attachment's filename as is.
 # If you don't like this (extremely long mime-encoded filename) then set
 # this True.
 SCRUBBER_DONT_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME = False

 # Use of attachment filename extension per se is may be dangerous
 because
 # virus fakes it. You can set this True if you filter the attachment by
 # filename extension
 SCRUBBER_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME_EXTENSION = False

Re: [Mailman-Users] Saving attachments

2005-09-16 Thread Elvis Fernandes
Hello,
Let me try and explain what I want to accomplish.
I send an email to the mailinglist with an attachment abc.xls.
Then, I use Internet Explorer to browse this archived email (this was setup
using mhonrac).
When I get to the webpage, the attachment shows up as abc.xls on the email
body.
But, when I click on the attachment to save it, the save as name changes
to .xls
I would like to make the save as name abc.xls to have a consistent name.
BTW, I just tried what you suggested in yur previous email, and that does
not give this consistency that I am looking for.
 Thanks
Elvis

I may not understand what you actually want. When you say you are
unable to save the attachment with the same name., what exactly do
 you mean.

Are you referring to the name that Mailman chooses for saving an
attachment scrubbed from the archives and digest and perhaps from
messages if you've configured that? If so, then

 SCRUBBER_DONT_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME = False

 and

 SCRUBBER_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME_EXTENSION = True

in mm_cfg.py should make this name close to the name of the attachment
although leading dots and characters except alphanumerics, dash,
underscore, and (non-leading)dot will be removed from the name. If
this editing is the problem you have, you can't change it because the
name must be made safe for use in a URL.

If this is not your issue, then you'll have to be more specific about
 what you're doing and seeing.

This is a MhonArc question and you'd be much more likely to get an
 answer from a MhonArc list.

The settings I referred to earlier in this thread only affect file

Mailman makes archives available using a URL such as:

 http://$hostname/mailman/private/$listname/

If the list defined a public, then replace 'private' with 'public'

[Mailman-Users] Mail debug question

2005-09-06 Thread Elvis Fernandes
Hello,
I am new to mailman, and having installed mailman on solaris I am testing
it out now.
Here is what I am doing:
(1) Test a mail-list.
I created a mail-list unix_sysadmin, and from my mail, I send out a test
email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The hostname is the solaris host where I have setup mailman, and my email is
the only account in the unux_sysadmin list now.
I do not receive this test email.
(2) Tested email from mailman host
I send out a test email from root to my email, and I received that.
So, what am I missing here?
Is there a way to debug?
