Re: [Mailman-Users] Email accounts for bounces, admin, confirm, etc
Hi Neilrey, Mark, Thanks for your replies. In my case, the company mail server is being maintained by the IT team, and the mailman server is being maintained by me. So from what you tell me, the /etc/aliases need to be updated in the company mail server, right? Currently, the /etc/aliases are updated only in the mailman server. When I email to unix_sysadmin-bounces, it comes back with permanent fatal errors. My theory for this error is: when I email unix_sysadmin-bounces, it goes to the company email server. Since this email server does not have unix_sysadmin-bounces email account, it just returns the email to the sender. The company email server does not have a way to check with the mailman server. Since this email server does not have unix_sysadmin-bounces email account, it just returns the email to the sender. The company email server does not have a way to check with the mailman server. Right? That complicates things considerably. What you need is for mail from the outside world to any of the 10 addresses per list to be delivered to your server. How this can be accomplished on the company mail server depends on what MTA runs there. It could probably be done with 10 email accounts per list, each with it's own .forward or other mechanism to redirect the mail to the Mailman server. It could probably also be done with aliases on the company server, or possibly programmatically. If the company mail server, via NTFS or whatever, could see the list of directories in Mailman's lists/ directory, it would be able to progammatically determine whether any particular address is a valid Mailman address and act accordingly (assuming it is progammable to that degree), but the IT people probably wouldn't like that since you could create a list with the same name as a company email user and 'intercept' that mail. It seems the 'best' solution is to use a separate email domain for Mailman, e.g. lists.company.com or mailman.company.com and publish an MX DNS record to get that domain delivered to the Mailman server. -- Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, Californiabetter use your sense - B. [Mailman-Users] Pipermail question
Hello, Thanks to all the responses from this mail list. I was able to successfully setup mailman, and have migrated one list already. There is one feature that I would like to have on the Pipermail. In the default way that I have setup mailman-pipermail, the emails can be browsed by Thread - Subject - Author - Date. If I select anyone of the above, I see the emails in the Subject - Author format. Is there a way to see it in the Subject - Author - Datestamp format ? Basically, all the index on thread/subject/author/date doesn't have the date stamp on each of the individual messages. Can the date-stamp be shown against each of the messages on mailman - pipermail. [Mailman-Users] Unable to create new mail list
Hello, I am setting up a brand new mailman server. After doing per the documentation, I tried creating a testing test mail list. However, I get an error that says illegal list name: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Any idea's on what I am missing? Here is the string. Thanks Elvis # ./newlist testing Enter the email of the person running the list: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Initial testing password: Create a new, unpopulated mailing list. This option suppresses the prompt and notification. -h/--help Print this help text and exit. You can specify as many of the arguments as you want on the command line: you will be prompted for the missing ones. Every Mailman list has two parameters which define the default host name for outgoing email, and the default URL for all web interfaces. When you configured Mailman, certain defaults were calculated, but if you are running multiple virtual Mailman sites, then the defaults may not be appropriate for the list you are creating. You also specify the domain to create your new list in by typing the command like so: newlist --urlhost=www.mydom.ain mylist where `www.mydom.ain' should be the base hostname for the URL to this virtual hosts's lists. E.g. with this setting people will view the general list overviews at http://www.mydom.ain/mailman/listinfo. Also, www.mydom.ainhttp://www.mydom.ain/ should be a key in the VIRTUAL_HOSTS mapping in mm_cfg.py/Defaults.py if the email hostname to be automatically determined. If you want the email hostname to be different from the one looked up by the VIRTUAL_HOSTS or if urlhost is not registered in VIRTUAL_HOSTS, you can specify `emailhost' like so: newlist --urlhost=www.mydom.ain --emailhost=mydom.ain mylist where `mydom.ain' is the mail domain name. If you don't specify emailhost but urlhost is not in the virtual host list, then mm_cfg.DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST will be used for the email interface. For backward compatibility, you can also specify the domain to create your new list in by spelling the listname like so: [EMAIL PROTECTED] where www.mydom.ain http://www.mydom.ain/ is used for `urlhost' but it will also be used for `emailhost' if it is not found in the virtual host table. Note that '--urlhost' and '--emailhost' have precedence to this notation. If you spell the list name as just `mylist', then the email hostname will be taken from DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST and the url will be taken from DEFAULT_URL (as defined in your Defaults.py file or overridden by settings in mm_cfg.py). Note that listnames are forced to lowercase. Re: [Mailman-Users] attachments in archives have wrong extensions
I am battling a somewhat related problem. I am trying to get mailman to save the attachment with the same file name as attachment. So, what is the syntax for SCRUBBER_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME_EXTENSION Is it True/False or 1/0 I am using mailman 2.1.6 Thanks Elvis On 9/16/05, Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: DW wrote: I searched Scrubber.py, and found some logic which said: if mm_cfg.SCRUBBER_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME_EXTENSION I should have pointed you directly at this, but I'm glad you found it anyway. My excuse is it's new in 2.1.6 and I was looking at a 2.1.5 base. -- Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. Re: [Mailman-Users] Saving attachments
Hello, Let me try and explain what I want to accomplish. I send an email to the mailinglist with an attachment abc.xls. Then, I use Internet Explorer to browse this archived email (this was setup using mhonrac). When I get to the webpage, the attachment shows up as abc.xls on the email body. But, when I click on the attachment to save it, the save as name changes to .xls I would like to make the save as name abc.xls to have a consistent name. BTW, I just tried what you suggested in yur previous email, and that does not give this consistency that I am looking for. Thanks Elvis On 9/16/05, Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Elvis Fernandes wrote: Yes I am using 2.1.6 and now I find these variables in Defaults.py. I updated the following in mm_cfg.py # Refer Defaults.py SCRUBBER_DONT_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME = False # Refer Defaults.py SCRUBBER_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME_EXTENSION = False And restarted mailman (/etc/init.d/mailman restart) I send a new email attachment, but still am unable to save the attachment with the same name. I may not understand what you actually want. When you say you are unable to save the attachment with the same name., what exactly do you mean. Are you referring to the name that Mailman chooses for saving an attachment scrubbed from the archives and digest and perhaps from messages if you've configured that? If so, then SCRUBBER_DONT_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME = False and SCRUBBER_USE_ATTACHMENT_FILENAME_EXTENSION = True in mm_cfg.py should make this name close to the name of the attachment although leading dots and characters except alphanumerics, dash, underscore, and (non-leading)dot will be removed from the name. If this editing is the problem you have, you can't change it because the name must be made safe for use in a URL. If this is not your issue, then you'll have to be more specific about what you're doing and seeing. -- Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. [Mailman-Users] Mail debug question
Hello, I am new to mailman, and having installed mailman on solaris I am testing it out now. Here is what I am doing: (1) Test a mail-list. I created a mail-list unix_sysadmin, and from my mail, I send out a test email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The hostname is the solaris host where I have setup mailman, and my email is the only account in the unux_sysadmin list now. I do not receive this test email. (2) Tested email from mailman host I send out a test email from root to my email, and I received that. So, what am I missing here? Is there a way to debug?
