I believe there's a third-party patch/addon to use MySQL for storing
membership information, although I think list configurations (and
almost certainly archives) are still stored on the filesystem.

Try searching for 'mailman mysql member adapter'.

It would probably be fairly easy to modify this to use a different SQL
server. Theoretically, LDAP, as well, although that would likely be a
more extensive rewrite.

If you're interested in storing *all* data on a MySQL server, you're
out of luck as far as I know.

Patrick is correct. There is also a read only LDAP MemberAdaptor. You
can find both of these in the Mailman patch tracker on sf.net.

There is active work on the MySQL MemberAdaptor. See
http://trac.rezo.net/trac/rezo/browser/Mailman/.

Also see the Mailman 2.2 wiki at
http://wiki.list.org/display/DEV/Mailman+2.2 for info on plans to
use some kind of SQL database for all list data, not just membership.

[Mailman-Users] mysql and mailman part 2

2005-07-29 Thread Sean Roe
Hi All,

here is some more information about my issue from yesturday. On my
default 'mailman' list I can add users and delete users no problem via
the web interface, however our 'emagazine' database which is set up the
same way, does not work. the only real difference is the 'emagazine'
database has over 123000 addresses in it. Did I hit some sort of
limitation?

Thanks,

I accept absolutely no responsibility for the above ruining your

However, it should allow you to use MySQL with Mailman 2.1+ for your

The bounce detection and delivery status stuff is less than perfect, and
there could well be other problems.

Enjoy.

Ideally, the MySQL bridge would be an option or add-on, much like say,
the htdig search tool, the Mhonarc hook, etc. Organisations such as
yours would not be obliged to use it.

So long as it didn't ONLY support MySQL, and supported PostgreSQL, etc. (I
think cursor's would be pretty much essential) then I wouldn't complain.

If this was true I'd be doing a breakdance right about now. ;-)

Currently Mailman does not operate directly with a MySQL database. I
know Barry has a few ideas up his sleeve with regard to opening things
up a bit but I don't know how he sees MySQL fitting in, if at all.

In my ideal world, fundamental data would be able to be in a SQL
database:

- user info
- archived messages
- list configurations
- site configurations

and possibly:

- incoming queue
- outgoing queue
- logs

I don't anticipate this in Mailman in the very near future so I am
currently working on a MLMI (mailing list manager interface) API for
PHP. The Mailman section of the API will be a collection of functions
that execute Mailman commands and return results. Like so:

mlmi_settype(Mailman);
mlmi_getlists();
mlmi_getmembers($listname);
mlmi_getconfig($listname);
mlmi_newlist($listname,$adminemail,$adminpass,$security);

The mlmi_getlists function, for example, would just execute
bin/list_lists, parse the results, and return an array available to any
PHP script that calls it.

Conceivably, mlmi functions could be used to populate a MySQL database
(I know, it would be much nicer if there was just one data source).

This may all seem a bit insane but it seems to be the only way I can do
what I need to do for the project I'm working on.

Re: [Mailman-Users] MySQL?

2003-05-31 Thread Kevin McCann
Been there, done that! (thank you, though)

Sympa showed promise on paper (specifically, the comparison paper
available on the Sympa site) but it just didn't work out. I couldn't get
the bloody thing installed on RedHat 8.0, despite working with one of
the developers to try to get it happening. I sent out a message to the
sympa-users list asking if *anyone* had successfully installed it on 8.0
and I all I heard was the crickets chirping. On the Sympa users list I
constantly hear (read) of people running into significant problems. And
the fact that there are *so* many Perl module dependencies just doesn't
leave me with a comfortable feeling about Sympa. A colleague and I
managed to get Sympa running on RedHat 7.3 after many hurdles, and we
gave it a spin, but it just isn't what we're looking for.

In addition, the SQL offering in Sympa only applies to the user table.
OK for a start, but I need more than that.

I have pretty much decided to go with Mailman because it is easy to
install, has a very large install base, and has most of the delivery
features I need. And the problems that are reported on this list don't
seem to be major show stoppers with no solutions in sight.

So now that I have identified the best open source MLM (at least for my
purposes), I just have to convince/beg/influence the Mailman
developmnent folks to get it to behave more like the best commercial MLM
(Lyris).;-)

I chose mailman because it didn't have any complex database backends. The
reason is because I run mailman as a mission critical service for Keele
University and so I want the least amount of software and technology to do
the job. Each new piece of software has to be evaluated and tested, then
installed and checked and then a backup procedure worked out and also a
fault recover procedure. Mailman as it stands is easy because there really
isn't that much beyond the software scripts and the data directories to it.
All I have is an rdist running to copy a working set of software to a
backup machine every few hours. Should we get a failure the changeover is
very simple.

If you start adding MySQL into the equation then there's the mailman stuff
AND the MySQL stuff to set up for duplicate fault tollerant operation.

If mailman could be made to work concurrantly on several servers using a
distributed MySQL database then that would certainly be worth doing because
you get failover backups for free but I suspect that the architecture of
mailman is too ingrained to the qrunner concept to make that possible.

I respect your position on this. However, many organisations do things
differently. We tend to push the envelope a little bit more and do not
shy away from trying new things, especially when there is a specific
goal in mind. FWIW, we want to create a community-building tool,
something simlar to yahoogroups, but simpler, and with the mailing list
being the focus. We have already done this quite successfully, but using
commercial software (Lyris + ColdFusion on NT). We want to do the same
thing but in an open source envuronment (Mailman + PHP on Linux).

Ideally, the MySQL bridge would be an option or add-on, much like say,

(sorry if I'm getting off-topic for this list - maybe the developers

[Mailman-Users] MySQL database?

2002-05-16 Thread Doug La Farge

I've just installed Mailman and am quite please at how easy it was to
get it up and running. I now have two issues that I cannot seem to
find documentation on: 1) running Mailman for Virtual Hosts and 2)
using MySQL or data from MySQL to include in the mail list.

With a bit of time I can probably figure out the former issue.

The latter issue seems a bit more tricky for a variety of reasons.
In short, I have other functionality (CGI/mod_perl scripts) running
for virtual web hosts that allow users to input email address and
thus be attached to a mailing list. I'd like to either a) use
MySLQ as the database for Mailman or b) pull those addresses from
MySQL and include them in the Mailman database for the mail list.
Both ideas have obvious caveats and pitfalls (how to sync an
un-subscribe request with MySQL if I use the original Mailman
database...).

Any ideas or leads are much appreciated.

[Mailman-Users] MySQL back end to Mailman?

2002-02-03 Thread Chris Hedemark

Boy is it hard doing a search for this stuff because of the infrastructural
uses of both components causing their names to be archived in many totally
unrelated places...

A little birdy said that Mailman was going to support a MySQL back end in
2.1. Is this true? If so I can't find anything about that on the Mailman
web site. Where can I learn more about this? And how close is it to being
ready for general consumption?

Reason I ask is I am currently building a PHP system for managing clubs and
would like to use Mailman as the mailing list manager instead of having to
waste lots of time reinventing the wheel and coming up short. The
membership database will be kept in MySQL which I would like Mailman to use.

Hay Chris!

AFAIK, Mailman 2.1 is not going to be fixed to use any particular external
database, but will have the hooks to use any external database. Someone,
perhaps you, will have to write the interface from Mailman to the database
format.

Someone may have already written such an interface for MySQL. If they
haven't yet, I'm sure it will come soon. You should ask on the Dev list
though, as this list is only for current production releases.

Good luck, and if you need any help in re-inventing this wheel, let me
know, I've written a few...

Re: [Mailman-Users] mysql and mailman

2001-10-11 Thread Jon Carnes

There is no true integration with Mysql (though rumor has it that this may
change in the near future...); however, you can use a couple of procedures
to build a bridge between Mailman's database and your Mysql database.

If you check the archives for the past month, you'll see some suggestions.

You can use the following Mailman commands to keep the databases in sync:
list_members - print out the email addresses in a list
sync_members - compare current members to a text file of email addresses
and add unique folks from the file to the Mailman list.

Good Luck. You might want to write up what you do and release it as a
HowTo, since this question seems to be popping up quite a bit.

The version of Mailman currently in Alpha supports such operations
via a plugin layer. You'll have to write the adaptor for your DB to

you could consider writing a cronned script (perl/ python/ whatever can access mysql) that gets the e-mails out of the database (all of them), saves them in a temp-file and which uses the remove_member and add_member mailman (python) scripts to first remove (all) and then add (all) the users?

you could make it (and your database design) even more complex by using flags in your table to mark entries as 'to be added' and 'to be removed', have the script interpret those flags and clear them (+ remove removed entries) from the table.

but i'd stick to the simpler solution ;-)

Subject: [Mailman-Users] MySQL?

I have a large mailing list of about 500. Concurrently there is a
maintained MySQL database that includes a column with these email
addresses.

Would there be any possibility of getting mailman to draw the list
from MySQL thus making updates automatic?
