I seem to remember that I used to scroll a message body hitting Spacebar
to go forward and Shift-Spacebar to go backwards. But Shift-Spacebar
doesn't do that anymore. Am I mis-remembering?

feature that I used from time to time, ie what I would call the
“merged reply”: one would select multiple messages and hit reply -
the composer would then merge the messages into one single reply.
This does not seem to work
