I've played around with keybindings and it seem to work ... but there are
some strange things happening that I don't understand.

I tried out the new Mail program after updating to 10.11 and found one
thing I liked.
I started to use the flags to quickly mark emails in the inbox with "Todo",
"Later", "Waiting", etc and then archiving the messages. Then using smart
mailboxes I was able to keep the inbox pretty clean.
