In my experience in cases like this, it often helps to delete the
preferences file.
However, yo do lose ALL the settings then which is usually not very
pleasant.

Well after quite a few tries at this - MM now open the new draft pane in
the middle of my screen but it is still quite narrow….

See how the new window is way over to the right and narrow?
I always move it into the middle and widen it. But this has been going
on for some days
Maybe that's the preview window?
When i write a mesage text and then MM see it can be an Markdown then MM open a
preview window under the message box
