I’m now using a fix supplied by a fellow MailMater user, some CSS
files placed in Resources > MmMessagesWebView. I’ll revert to the
default config and make sure I’m using the latest test release for a
while, and report back what I find.

Yes, MailMate has always been hardcoded to 4 and it's a bit of a hack.
