My guess is that this small bug has been fixed in 6023 or 6024.

It is mentioned higher up in the post that the placement of Homebrew install

This has changed since I originally wrote the post in 2014 without me noticing

I have experienced this as well. Anything that is not pure plain text will
result in an attached image.

A workaround is to use the command "Paste as Plain Text" in the Edit menu. Hold
down Shift + Option to see it.

Keyboard shortcut: Shift + Option + Command + V

You can remap this to plain Command + V with Apples Keyboard system settings.

I have 100k+ messages, so a lot less that you. When I search it takes less than
a second on my iMac (Core i5, 40 GB RAM, SSD).

Do you always have to search all 900k+ messages? Maybe a subset, like the

I suggest moving everything to "Archive".

You can set up both rules and custom keybindings to e.g. move en e-mail to
archive and tag it.

When I open MailMate I start with pressing "i".

"i" = ( "goToMailbox:", "INBOX", "makeFirstResponder:", "mainOutline",
"selectFirstMessageRow:" );

I then use these four options to sort through all the mail.

"r" = "replyAll:";
"f" = "toggleFlag:";
"a" = "archive:";
"d" = "deleteMessage:";

After this my inbox is empty.

MailMate is a pure IMAP client, it does not have anything like "On my
Mac" folders.

Look in the "Sources" section, in the bottom of the left sidebar. There
you can create new IMAP folders in your IMAP accounts with the "New IMAP
Mailbox" command.

But my suggestion is to skip "real" folders and take maximum advantage
of MailMate and its smart folders.

With MailMate I use smart folders extensively and just archive all mails
in one “Archive” mailbox instead.

I have set up my own key bindings so “i” will select the inbox,
“a” will archive mail, “d” will delete them, “f” flag them
and “r” for making a reply. This takes care of most of my mail
interaction.

Here you find my key bindings:

I have smart folders for people/projects/organisations etc. Since smart
folders are just searches the same e-mail can show up in multiple
places. No more worrying if a particular e-mail should go to the
personal folder or project x folder.

just fine with the search function, when I had to look into mails of
the past. But may I will like it, when I try to finde usefull cases
for me.

I used to have a lot of rules that moved in mails to a lot of different
folders. After moving to MailMate and discovering how smart the smart
folders are I now use a different approach.

1. All mail comes in to the standard "Inbox".
2. There I look at them and press "a" for archive or "d" for delete etc.
3. The "Inbox" is then empty and all mail I want to keep is in
"Archive".

I then have a lot of smart folders for customers, persons, projects,
mailing lists etc. They completely replace all the folders I used to
have.

For me this is a lot better :

* One mail can show up in any number of smart folders.
* Reorganising things does not involve moving any mail, just changing
some smart folders.

* I can add and remove smart folders without any risk of losing mail.

This way everything arrives in to your inbox. You read the mail and then

If you are willing to take advantage of IMAP, smart folders etc. and
spend time to find out all the cool stuff Mail Mate can do it should
work beautifully for you.

If you want to exactly mimic your current way of handling e-mail I don't
think you will find anything that works well.

IMAP offers no true benefit for me

You really should switch to IMAP regardless of if you pick MailMate.
Even if you don't need to access mail on multiple devices (yet) IMAP
have other advantages.

* All your mail are in at least two places, IMAP-server and mail client.
* Makes it easy to switch mail client, no need to migrate mails.

You will need to get an e-mail provider with enough space for all your
mail if you don't have one already.

All incoming messages are sorted out by filters into close to 300
mailboxes. What is left in the inbox is some junk that sneaked thru
spam filters and a few misc messages.

I used to sort mails in many real folders with many rules. With MailMate
I just dump everything in Archive after handling it (manually or via
rules). I then use MailMates smart folders (really smart) to organise
them to my liking. Smart folders are really saved searches but they feel
just like folders.

The big advantage with smart folders for me are that mail can be in
multiple folders at the same time. It's also quick and easy to
reorganise since you just change some searches and there are no need to
actually move mail around.

It seems that MailMate does not support local mailboxes, that is
having mail copied off the server to my computer.

All mail will be on the IMAP-server *and* a copy will be in MailMate (or
most other IMAP clients you use).

When you search etc. MailMate can do all that locally and it's really
fast even with huge mail volumes.

Yes it's a security thing, go to "Preferences… -> Security" and there
you have the image blocking settings.

Apple Mail and Postbox (I’ve used them) support rules, so that one
can move inbox messages to pre-assigned folders. I don’t see how to
do that, except with smart folders that I’ll mention in a minute.

In MailMate you set them per mailbox. Right click e.g. the "Inbox" and
select "Edit mailbox". Last tab is "Rules".

Rules are only run on mail as they are added to a mailbox. In other mail
clients I used a lot of rules, in MailMate I almost only use the smart
folders instead.

Smart folders seem very useful, but I don’t know what I’m doing. I

I prefer them from normal folders since I can have mail shop up in

Make sure your e-mail account have enough space to store all your mail.
With IMAP all the mail is stored on the mail server and your e-mail
client (MailMate in this case) have a copy that is stored locally on
your computer.

Apple Mail can also do IMAP. My suggestion would be to add the IMAP
account to Apple Mail and deactivate (do not delete!) the POP account.
Then you can transfer/copy all the mail in to the IMAP account with drag
and drop in Apple Mail.

With all your mail now on the server in an IMAP account you may use any
number of IMAP clients to access it. All of them will see the same
mails. You can set up the IMAP-account on your phone, other computers
etc., they will all see the same mail.

You may keep your folder structure in the IMAP account but if you are
going to use MailMate my tips is to just dump all the mail in the
"Archive" folder.

One of MailMates best features is its "Smart folders" and they are
really smart. Apple Mail and the Finder has smart folders as well, but
they are not as powerful. You can see Smart folders as saved searches.

I use them exclusively to organise my mail. I set up smart folders that
displays mail from/to specific senders, domains, mailing lists, projects
etc.

With real folders you must decide where to store a mail. With smart
folders in can be displayed in multiple places, e.g both in a personal
smart folder and in a project smart folder.

High volume and boring stuff goes to mail accounts that I only check on

Thank you for the 1.8 release Benny, it's very stable for me!

Improved graphics is one of the least important things for me. I don't
mind the default OS X look for folders and the text buttons at all and
are they not easier to maintains between OS X releases?

My biggest interest is that MailMate is profitable enough for you so
that you are able to maintain it and polish it for decades to come. A
bit like what BareBones does for BBEdit.

You can set up a new smart mailbox and tell it to include e.g all mail
from All Messages except mail that are in on or more other (smart)
mailboxes. Something like this.

Mailboxes :
All:
None:
Lists
(any other mailboxes you want to exclude)
All:
All Messages

I have the same issue with quick look and PDF. It has never worked for

I think I never reported it as it is a minor issue for me personally.

No, IMAP only.

Support Mailmate SSL for POP3, IMAP, SMTP?

Yes, SSL is supported for IMAP and SMTP

How could Mailmate import Mails from Mail.app or Outlook.app mail
databases?

Would drag and drop works between to import mails?

With IMAP you normally have all your mail on the server so need to
import anything. MailMate will sync up with your server just as any
other IMAP client.

You can import mbox, elm and elmx mailboxes in to one of your IMAP
accounts with MailMate.

Gives a free trial to test them?

MailMate works in full for 30 days without a license key.

Whats the future prospects from Mailmate?

Really good I believe.

Yosemite ready?

From what other user report here on this list it seems to work pretty
ok. By the time Yosemite ships I'm sure Benny (the MailMate developer)
will have fixed the minor issues that exist.

If you feel that is to much work or to complicated I think you need to
look for another solution to your problem. Running mail-servers is not

You can get an e-mail provider that allow you to store that mush or set
up a local IMAP server. I do the later and it works really well but it
is some work to set up and maintain.

I already have smart mailboxes that define most of these searches. I

I have set rules on a couple of my smart mailboxes that simply have an
action that moves mail to a specific mailbox. No conditions needed since
rules only seems to run on new messages.

I have also added rules to the Junk and Trash mailboxes with action to
add tag \Seen.

Attaching rules to mailboxes is a very smart solution when you figure it
out. The only problem is that it's hard to get an overview of your
rules.

I tried to set it now to ^E but it doesn't take. But having all
editors use the same shortcut and let users disable bundles sounds
lika a good idea.

Now I notice that is has taken, the BBEdit command short cut is ^E.
Not sure when it happened, I did a system restart during the weekend,
maybe that did it.

[MlMt] BBEdit command bundle

2014-04-10 Thread Fredrik Jonsson

Hi,

I have started working on a BBEdit command bundle and have some
questions.

The code is here: https://github.com/frjo/mailmate-bundles

1. I tried to set environment variable MM_SUBJECT in the mmCommand file
but it don't seem to work for some reason. The Textmate bundle does this
as well so I guessed it should work?
2. Would it be possible to add something like a fileExtension setting
to the mmCommand file? Would be nice to set it to *.md so BBEdit knows
I'm writing Markdown.
3. The keyEquivalent in mmCommand seems to have no effect, the shortcut
is stuck to ^C? But the MacVim bundle has another shortcut.

[MlMt] Smart folders and Contacts groups

2014-04-08 Thread Fredrik Jonsson

Hi,

Just started using MailMate and really liking it!

One of the few things I miss is some kind of integration with groups in
Contacts (OS X Address book). I noticed two other feature request for
this and wanted to add a +1 from me.

Settings up smart folders for customers and groups of friends would be
made a lot easier if one can use Contacts groups.
