Re: [MlMt] Inbox vs All Messages

2017-01-16 Thread Robert Brenstein
I haven't checked everything in the manual but this is perhaps what
you are referring to

The first mailbox in the mailbox outline, “All Messages”,
contains all messages in your
IMAP account(s) except those in the designated mailboxes for deleted
messages or

messages marked as junk.

Yes, indeed, that was what I was referring to.

My interpretation of this is that All Messages contains all messages
in the IMAP account(s) except deleted and junk (as it says in the
manual). In other words, if you only have one account (as an example)
and have created N number of mailboxes for that mail account then All
Messages will contain the messages stored in those mailboxes also.
Inbox will only contain the messages stored in the designated incoming
mailbox.

That seems to be generally true. However, one of my accounts has an
Inbox with several submailboxes (subinboxes), where some incoming mails
are diverted by the rules on the server. The messages in those
submailboxes are not shown in All Messages and not in Inbox. I can see
them only when selecting the Source.

While investigating this, I noticed that

- I can designate any mailbox on the server as one of the standard types
except as inbox.
- Since Inbox is not in the list of mailbox types, I can’t see if a
given mailbox has no type or is Inbox.

BTW, it is misleading to say that Inbox is for “new” messages.
Better to say “incoming” messages - their age is irrelevant.

My fault ... I just keep new messages in my incoming mailbox ... so in
my case my statement is true but I realise that this is not true for all
others.

Furthermore, they do not have to include only a Mailbox called Inbox.
Inbox is really a type of standard mailbox. For example, one Outlook
account I use has a mailbox called Clutter, which is also of type
Inbox and is shown by MM together with Outlook’s Inbox (which is
fine). The same is true for Trash, Junk, Sent, Archive, Drafts are —
the actual names of those mailboxes can vary from server to server.

Yes, I know ... I was trying to keep things simple to make easier to
explain the mailboxes.

Hi Jan,

I think you misread my post. I meant that it seems that Sent, Drafts,

Inbox. The documentation implies that but does not state it explicitly.

So what is the difference between All Messages and Inbox? Send Messages,
Drafts, Archive? It would be nice if those differences were explicitly
mentioned in the documentation.

Is there a description of those standard mailboxes in the

[MlMt] Inbox vs All Messages

2017-01-14 Thread Robert Brenstein
I have a smart mailbox which is set to show messages sent to, cc, bcc,
from, resent-from a specific domain. When I set it to check Inbox (in
the Mailboxes tab), I see 2867 messages. When I set it to check All
Messages, I see 3121 messages. However, when I see it to check the
source, I see 3157 messages.

I expected All Messages to show me more messages than source, because it
should include messages that I sent to users in that domain from my
other accounts. The source includes messages in trash and spam mail. I
expected All Messages to include those as well. Apparently, All does not
really mean all.
