Problem solved!
Although I don't know the exact details, it was some problem with the
firewall of our server. Next to (or instead of...) the port, there was a
problem with internal and external IP-addresses. Now I am able to use the
WMS-services of our ArcGIS-server in mapguide.

Thanks! I always tested the wms-service from outside the MapGuide-server
(including the GetCapabilities request), and as I said it was working fine
from my Desktop and other machines.
But now I tried the GetCapabilities request from a webbrowser on the
Mapguide-server, and I'm getting the same
The Advanced button in the Maestro WMS Feature Source editor builds this
document for you through a user interface so you don't have to edit the XML
document by hand.

A few things to try...
The log that you send includes the Unable to connect to the host. string.
Is the Maestro configuration being done from the same desktop as the
MapGuide server (WMS client?).
Some ArcGIS services require SERVICE=WMS in the HTTP URL - though you can
obviously connect
