If you definately need the file name then you'll have to parse the data to
extract it. If MB isn't powerful enough VB definately will be. Use the instr
function recursively to determine the position of the last "\", and ".tab". And
then use mid() to extract the filename.
But are you sure you

Hello Listers,
Can anyone recommend a good 3rd party program that does data conversions for MapInfo?
Specifically, we're looking for a programs that convert ArcInfo data, but it would
also be nice if it would work for AutoCad and other such formats.
Thanx

Laith,
If possible, I would scan and register the paper map and use it as reference. If
that's not possible, you can "eye ball" it with your existing vector files/tables.
The manual geocoding process is relatively easy:
1. Open your reference vector files/tables (or registered scan).
2.
I've been trying to open some large grid files( CDED data layers) and create
contours and 3D views with VM. The following is a summary of the problems

A client needs to get a tab file into ScanUS and tells me any of the following will
work:
User Location .LOC
User Polylines .PLN
User Polygons .PGN
User Buffer .BUF

The User Polygons and the like are text files and I could awk or perl the mif/mid into

Could you help me please with this problem:
I have over 300 000 adjacent polygones to reclassify. Each one has a value
between 0 and 207 (I have 208 classes!). I have to reclassify the
polygones to get less classes. First, I can do a query on a range of values
(for example, 1 to 10) and

Dear listers,
I have a problem I hope you can help me with. I am using MI 5.5 but do not
have MapBasic. I am trying to write a short set of commands to use in the
MapBasic window that will set table styles, set a clip region and export
that region as a .wmf file. Ihave over 1000 workspaces and

I recently had a similar problem with 5.5. In which I had a clip
region and 3000 point objects. The map took so long to draw that I
finally gave up. I was told by tech support that a change in the way
objects are handled result in a significant slowing of the program and

I've taken the liberty of adding your request to the Directions Magazine
MapInfo-l wish list. Of course, I've got my own wishes for the list
itself, like not needing to click 17 times to see the whole content.
I complained about that at

While it is true that accuracy is very important for spatial
analysis, the problem is with clipping regions and the presentation of
objects. I can pretty easily tell if Chicago has been clipped
accurately.
The slowness of 5.5 however destroys its credibility. In presenting

Hi there,
I am looking for a good utility that will create grids for our maps. There
are lots out there,
but most won't do non-earth. I was wondering if anyone out there knows of
any, even if
there is a small cost involved.
Thanks in advance

Mappers,
What a difference a file format makes. When I asked about .pdf I received a
veritable cornucopia of opinions. In contrast, my query about .bil

It seems that there need be a .hdr file
I am currently using Spatial Anlysist in Arcview to process grid based
infiormation and Mapinfo to produce the final maps after exporting the grids
as tiff files and registering them.
I have heard of vertical mapper as an add on for mapinfo to handle grid data
and I would like to know more
Thanks to all those who responded.
Check out replies C and I, which describe the process of geocoding by eye "aka
heads-up digitizing".
Speacial thanks to Peter who had a table with the local map reference and very
generously geocoded my table for me!!!

Hello all,
I have a client who needs a very large dataset (1 Gb of MI data)

Dear MI-L,
Does anyone know if there is a way of define an ODBC data source in a PC
automatically, i.e., without The user manipulation ? Is there a way to do
this with a system DLL ?
Thanks in advance,

Hi - I am using MI Professional version 4.0 on W95 with 32 Mb RAM with ATI

these bits of image only by restarting the PC. This happens only with MI!
Dear Carl,
Choose option 4 and include vertical mapper.
This is likely to be much less expensive than conversion.
As a side effect your client will eventually thank you for
getting rid of Akeview...
...and replacement with superior software.

Hi Carl,
I haven't used UT under 5.5 but I do use it a lot under 5.0 and it works
really well, although there are a couple of annoying things that it does,
the worst being to add the name "_region", "_text" (or similar) to the final
coverage name. (Remember that arcview can only have one feature

What's wrong with ArcView? I didn't like it when I tried it millions of
years ago, but surely it's improved since
