If you're interested in the not-so-sunny Northeast, the Penn State Geography
program has an excellent GIS component. It's focus, however is more
theoretical/academic, although there's some top-notch practical research being
done and students are encouraged to apply their research to real-world problems.
It also has an advantage of being closely tied to an excellent cartography
component. In fact, ALL grads are strongly encouraged to take cartography, if
they have not done so previously.

As of two years ago, the standard GIS package was ArcView/ArcInfo as the program
has close ties with ESRI, and the GIS folks prided themselves on staying on the
cutting edge. (I believe that MapInfo was being tested for possible class use
when I left in 97). We had three labs used for GIS/Cartography running NT,
Macs, and Suns. There's also a great deal of latititude (pun intended) to take
courses outside the Geography Department (particular if ones undergratuate major
was Geography), and Penn State has some pretty good CompSci, Natural Resource,
Telecommunications, and MIS programs. As far as Latin America goes, the
Department had several professors either studying Latin America and/or
supporting grads with interests in Latin America. The Department home page is:
http://www.geog.psu.edu/. As far as other schools, I understand Univ. of
California - Santa Barbara (or is it San Diego?) had a very good program as
well, as did SUNY-Buffalo. Both were considered strong rivals of the Penn
State GIS program.

I was a Penn State Geog grad student from 95-97. Although my focus was economic
geography/telecommunications and not GIS, I'll be glad to answer any questions,
or at least try to point you in the right direction. There are several ex-Penn
State GISers on this list, so they may respond as well.

Subject: MI GIS Graduate Programs

Hello List,

I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good GIS/geography graduate
programs either in the U.S. or abroad. I'm most interested in those
programs that emphasize research in Latin America. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank-you very much,
