I was awake past midnight and your question continued to haunt me? Is there a
future with MapInfo products? I decided to do some late night reading.....

If you take a look at the session descriptions for the upcoming MapInfo
Developer Conference in November look around 10:45 am on the last day, the 13th.

http://www.mapinfo.com/events/conferences/partner_summit99/index.html

Andy Dressel and Eric Blasenheim will "preview the radical changes coming to
MapInfo Professional 6.0."

"These include unprecedented level of compontentization, direct access to alien
formats, and improvements in usability." Other developer nifties will include a
design outline of the "Pro" series: ProViewer (our AkeExploiter competitor),
ProPress, ProDraw, and ProBuild.

Via this list, I believe there was a couple of weeks back a note from MapInfo
(Andy?) about Visual Basic. Essentially the comment was "not interested" in
investment into Microsoft compilier technolgy. So what might be their plan?

Give Oracle's 8i is Java compliant and the Troyites have a pretty neat
arrangement on 8i via Spatial Cartridge and, when needed, Spatialware plus their
pattern of investment in Java-ization of MapInfo "X" tools, I would try to
decipher the story from the Java sessions.

MapJ which will be released by November might be an answer. My bet its a "bean"
of a good idea.

Did you know that Oracle has Java and SQL system, 8i, with unique native index
methods for video, imagery, audio, space, and text? That is dominates the
webization of massive amounts of data? That these systems can be hosted on
smallest PDA's to the latest Linux and Solaris OSs via Java technologies ?

Or you can buy into AkeOjective not gain much in functionality over the 7.x
series, have to buy SDE and expensive "add-on" modules and deal with a middle
ware. (And if you have problems with MapInfo's upgrade cost take a look at the
Red Land's ball and chains.) If I were a AML or Ave asseted company on UNIX, I
would be wondering about my pending life with Visual Basic.

Hmmmmm???? What is Java?
