I had a similar problem a few years ago. The root problem, I believe is HP's
drivers for inkjets: I was using a Deskjet 550C. I solved the problem in 2
ways...

1. The TIFFs had been scanned in with a HP Deskscan as compressed. BUT
Paintshop Pro identified the format as PACKBITS-compressed rather than the
better LZW-compressed. So I resaved the files from Paintshop Pro as
LZW-compressed TIFFS and they worked OK, though with very large spool-files.
So you could try a different TIFF compression type if you can.

2. I junked the DJ550C and got an Epson Stylus Pro XL instead. This allowed
me to print A3 size, but the spool files at 720dpi resolution were TINY
compared to those the HP produced at 300 dpi.

By the way, some of the TIFFs I now print to the Epson are of the order of
150MB (uncompressed)! Have you considered converting the file to another
format supported by MapInfo and trying that?
