What version of EXCEL are you using? If I remember correctly, EXCEL 97 and
2000 can handle that many (>77K) records.

Subject: MI parsing fields

Listers,

Not exactly an MI question, but still quite germane to digital mapping. I've
been given an Access table with State Water Well Numbers in the form
04N25W19F04S. I'd like to break apart this number into its components,
namely Twp 04N, Range 25W, Section 19, Well No. F04, Meridian S (San
Bernardino). This will hopefully permit some level of crude geocoding, since
I have no better location data for these wells.

Parsing a number is easy in Excel, but the table is too large for Excel to
handle (>77k records). Access doesn't seem to allow calculated fields in
tables, although I may be missing something in that pit of nastiness they
call their Help files.

Any ideas will be gratefully received and summarized.

Cheers,
Tim
