John,
I had a similar need to combine layers of a map series so I wrote a
mapbasic program called combiner. It allows you to select a start path and
text which must appear in the file name (i.e your contour). It will then
find all files that exist down the directory tree from your start path which
have the "TEXT" in the name and combine to one output file. The program will
test all files found and set the bounds to the new extents. You also have
the option of using a text file which lists the files you want to combine.
