Re: [libreoffice-marketing] About Anti-Spam Measures for Our Telegram Groups

2020-09-18 Thread Muhammet Kara

Hi Mike, Simon & all,

It is my pleasure. :)

We have been testing the bot in the marketing group for the last few
days, no issues so far. I think we can continue with the Documentation
group (again relatively small, 50+ members) now, and Design & QA groups
(100+ members) in a few days, and leave the main LibreOffice group
(1000+ members) to the last.

I have also created a wiki page with the related content (context,
current status on different groups, bot setup & settings etc.):
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Website/TelegramAntiSpamBot

Thanks a lot for all your work on this, Muhammet! Muchly appreciated,
especially as spam levels go up. If it works well on the Marketing
channel, we can roll it out on other channels as well.

[libreoffice-marketing] About Anti-Spam Measures for Our Telegram Groups

2020-09-16 Thread Muhammet Kara

Hi all! :)

We constantly get spam on our telegram groups, especially the larger
ones. So we are discussing to bring some anti-spam measures to remedy
this via telegram bots.

In short, I propose to add a simple new-joiner verifier bot at first. It
will just verify new-joiners without interfering messages from the
present members. If user doesn't verify himself/herself with a simpel
reply in time, he/she will be kicked out of the group. And new joiners
will not be able to send anything other than plain text messages for the
first 24 hours. More over, it can greet new-comers with a custom welcome
message. It is completely reversible, and we can fine-tune or replace it
at any time.

Please feel free to head to the test group to see it in action:
https://t.me/joinchat/E0IDnBjmzkCx3mWYgqPOPQ

And please feel free to join us in the Marketing telegram channel to
follow the discussion/status or give input about the topic:
https://t.me/LibreOfficeMarketing

(The discussion originally started in the Documentation telegram group,
with major involvement also by Emiliano Vavassori and Dennis Roczek.
Because it was lengthy, and in a free-format talk form, I couldn't
include in here. You may head to the Documentation group, and start
reading from "Maybe we should add an anti-spam bot here.":

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Event: GSoC Presentation in Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey

2019-11-10 Thread Muhammet Kara
Hi Mike,

There were ~40 attendees, mostly from the Computer Science department. The
best part was that they were very excited, and asked many questions; and
the event took almost 2 hours instead of the planned 40 minutes. Many of
them seemed 'sold' at the idea of spending the next summer (or a summer)
working on LibreOffice or another FLOSS project, through GSoC.

Also tried to share my adventure as a FLOSS enthusiast, from a volunteer
translator to a professional developer working as part of Collabora's
LibreOffice development team. And I am glad to say that they seemed
inspired of the story. :)

This is an after-event tweet by Hacettepe University ACM Student Chapter,
with photos: https://twitter.com/acmhacettepe/status/1193080874516074497

I am also attaching a few more photos from the event.

Oh, and be prepared to hear more from around here regarding
LibreOffice/FLOSS activities in the upcoming days. We have more activities
in the planning, and hope to share soon. ;)

Cheers,
Muhammet

[libreoffice-marketing] Upcoming Talk at the Free Software Summer Camp in Bolu, Turkey

2019-07-31 Thread Muhammet Kara
Hi all,

I'll be traveling tomorrow to Bolu to give a talk titled "Beginning FLOSS
Development with GSoC (& LibreOffice)" to the attendees of the Free
Software Summer Camp in Abant İzzet Baysal University.

Organizers informed me that they are expecting around 400 attendees
-fingers crossed :)- based on the number of students there. I'll try to
also get some photos in case we would like to share on a blog post and/or
social media. I don't know the 'weather' there, so I'll take LibreOffice,
GNOME, and Collabora roll-ups with me, try to use them based on the
situation.

I am also planning to hand out some stickers & flyers, and will try to
attract some attention to the being-planned LibreOffice development
lectures (during the Fall season at a university in Ankara).

Place: Free Software Summer Camp, Abant İzzet Baysal University, Bolu,
Turkey
Date: 01 Aug 2019
Time: 18:00 (UTC+3)

Best,
Muhammet

[libreoffice-marketing] Event Report: METU NCC LibreOffice Event(s) 2018

2019-01-02 Thread Muhammet Kara
Hi all,

During the last weekend (Dec 28-29-30, 2018), we had a series of events at
METU NCC (in Cyprus), organized by the METU NCC ACM Student Chapter.

The number of attendees at the seminar was much lower than the last year,
probably because of the holiday season, but interaction/result efficiency
of the workshop/hackfest was better than the last year. Most of the
attendees were from the Computer Engineering department.

All attendees completed the "getting started" part of LibreOffice
development. Some of them submitted their patches to Gerrit, and some are
preparing to do so.

Here are the event pages on our wiki:

   * There were Pardus, Debian, Windows and Mac machines. They

might also be a Fedora, but I am not sure about that.)

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Details of the Upcoming Event: Free Software and Linux Days 2018 (OYLG18)

2018-05-17 Thread Muhammet Kara

Hi Mike,

I am back at home after the Free Software and Linux Days 2018 in
İstanbul. It was a small and cozy event. The number of attendees was
lower than the previous years, but we had more time for each visitor as
a plus. It was also a good opportunity to break the ice between
different segments of the Turkish Free Software community.

We had a nice booth jointly run by LibreOffice Turkey and GNOME Turkey
community members, next to the Pardus booth. We gave out stickers to the
visitors, answered their questions about LibreOffice, GNOME, and
Free/Libre Software in general. Community members also had a lot of time
to chat, and to discuss the current situation and the future of our
community in Turkey.

We also had 3 LibreOffice related presentation/seminar sessions:

 * LibreOffice Geliştiricisi Olmak (Being a LibreOffice Developer), by
   Muhammet Kara
 * LibreOffice Sertifikasyonu (LibreOffice Certifications), by Muhammet
   Kara
 * Açık Belge Biçimi (The Open Document Format), Nurcan Tür

And we now have all materials to set up a complete LibreOffice booth in
any upcoming event in Turkey, thanks to TDF for funding the booth stuff,
and the travel costs of the booth staff.

Please see the wiki page for more details, photos, and links to related
tweets: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Events/2018/OYLG2018#Aftermath

[libreoffice-marketing] Re: About Free Software and Linux Days 2018 (OYLG'18) in Istanbul

2018-04-09 Thread Muhammet Kara

Hi Italo, Mike, and all,

The date has finally been announced. Free Software and Linux Days 2018
(OYLG'18) will take place from May 12th 2018 through May 13th 2018 in
santralistanbul campus of Bilgi University. No prior registration is needed.

I'll apply for a talk, and I'll also encourage others to apply.

I'll also ask for a booth space. By the way, what about a combined booth
with GNOME? (Since there is probably limited space, and we will need
people to run the booth.)

I won't be able to attend, as I have a very busy quarter with

For the talk, I would focus on the announcement of LibreOffice 6.0
(attached, the announcement presentation).

No worries. Thanks for the tip and the slides!

For the booth, Mike is getting some new stickers.

We can use those stickers soon. :) And I appreciate if you could add the
event to the calendar.

Hi :)
I am just curious ...

How this is going? Anyone know how much would be needed from the
budget? - or is this being handled off-list so that it can be dealt
with more quickly?

Good luck all and keep up the good work. You are all stars :))
Many regards from
Tom :)

Unfortunately, we will not have a general budget approved until

Also, we have invited people to submit budget requests for 2017,

absolutely need to stick to the rules (in order to approve a

early in
the year, we can have a special approval, but the process has to start
earlier.

The project is growing, and we must have some internal discipline for
budgets, as otherwise managing the expense budget is a nightmare
(as it
has been in 2016).

Mike and myself, with the help of other people, are looking at
what can
be shipped from Germany. We will come back with the information ASAP.

Do you want to order, or others send them to you?
There are designs here

Both options are okay for me, as long as I get the materials on time. :)
I may even be able to get some materials prepared here if tdf has budget

Good to know. If needed, he may want to ship them to you?

Let me add him to the conversation.

There is going to be a conference (Akademik Bilişim Konferansı -
Conference of Academic Computing)[1] in Turkey between 4th and 10th of
Feb (the main part starts on 8th of Feb). And we are going to have some
training sessions there about LibreOffice Hacking.

I know this is a short notice, but I would like to know if you could
