Hi Francisco, thanks for your message. We have a dynamic community in
Mexico, so adding Celia who can introduce you to other members. We also
have a blog in Spanish, so adding Daniel who is the main editor of that
blog. Of course, you can also help by localizing messages and other

make it easier to use, usually Writer, Impress, and Calc.
I joined the marketing team because I want more people to know about the

My native language is Spanish, but I can translate from English to Spanish.
I could help with that, translating images that could be used on social

[libreoffice-marketing] First step - Introducing myself

2026-03-30 Thread Francisco GC
Hi! I'm Francisco Guzmán from Mexico. I don't know how to interact with the
marketing team, but I found out how to send a message to this email
address.
I use LibreOffice because it's open source; I'm adapting to the suite to
make it easier to use, usually Writer, Impress, and Calc.
I joined the marketing team because I want more people to know about the
advantages and potential of LibreOffice.

My native language is Spanish, but I can translate from English to Spanish.
I could help with that, translating images that could be used on social
media, as well as creating new advertising images.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice slogan ideas?

2026-03-25 Thread Matthew Hurst
Hi Everardo

I'm going to be uploading some wiki pages about messaging and comms for LO
today and there's overlap with the slogans. Hopefully should make it easier
than plucking words out of the air (been there, done that... it's trickier than
it looks!).

The pages are all up for discussion and improvement, of course.

I'll post a link on this list when they're up.

I've created this page:

Do you want to put your content in it? Then we can share suggestions and
tweaks together, and encourage translations. If you're not familiar with
wiki syntax, I can give you a hand.

Great, thanks for offering to help! We have flyers that we hand out at
events, in various languages, such as:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/04/23/libreoffice-flyers-for-schools-and-universities-help-us-to-hand-them-out/

And a more modern design:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/07/15/libreoffice-flyer-for-schools-and-universities-extra-design/

What do you think? If you'd like to work on improved designs, I can send
you the source file.

Regarding graphics, we have recently contracted a design agency to
improve our graphics, creating things more consistent with our branding,
like:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/LO_26_2-light.png

But of course, there's lots to do. Is there anything in particular
you've seen, that you'd like to work on, or could be improved?

Cheers!
Mike

account I use exclusively for this list yesterday about 'upgrading mailbox
security'. Reported it to my email provider etc. but just to flag it up...

Thanks for letting us know, Matt. Yes, this is a public list so bots
will scrape it from the archive, or sign up. (It's a broader topic, but
the whole web is being swamped by AI and scam bots thesedays and places
like Reddit are becoming unusuable. It will be interesting to see what
happens next...)

Cheers,
Mike

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice marketing materials from design agency

2026-03-12 Thread Mike Saunders

Hello everyone,

Since late last year, TDF has contracted a design agency to create
materials to improve our branding and marketing. We've already used
their work in videos, press releases, social media and blog posts, and
now I've added the source files to the wiki on this page:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Material#Graphics_from_design_agencies

This includes:

* Video opening animation (light)
* Video opening animation (dark)
* Banner for release of LibreOffice 26.2
* Infographic how donations were used in 2025
* Social media header banner
* Banner for LibreOffice at FOSDEM 2026

Anyone can use these materials for their local marketing and translation
work, of course. Let me know if you need anything else, and I can ask
the design agency!

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Introduction

2026-02-26 Thread Italo Vignoli
Hi Matt, contributing to open source projects in the area of marketing
is not like consulting to a regular business, so please expect delays
and/or replies which may look weird. Most of the people in the project
do not have any kind of marketing background, and in some cases see
marketing as an issue rather than an opportunity.

In addition, many people are volunteers, and people who are paid like
Mike and me do not work full time, and do cover all continents, talking
with journalists, supporting local communities, handling branding
issues, preparing announcements, managing marketing budgets, speaking at
conferences, representing TDF at global level (EU, governments, NGOs,
...), writing blog posts, preparing slide decks for events, writing the
Annual Report, and organizing LibreOffice Conferences.

I may have missed some tasks, but I am definitely involved almost on a
daily basis on all the above tasks. Mike is focusing on slightly
different tasks, but the overall workload is the same. All this, with a
marketing budget close to zero euro (if compared to any competitor's
marketing budget).

So, please be patient. In open source projects, patience is one of the
most important assets of good contributors.

All that said, I think it makes sense to have a call in early March to
discuss about future marketing activities.

Best regards, Italo

Great, thanks for offering to help! We have flyers that we hand out at
events, in various languages, such as:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/04/23/libreoffice-flyers-for-schools-and-universities-help-us-to-hand-them-out/

And a more modern design:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/07/15/libreoffice-flyer-for-schools-and-universities-extra-design/

What do you think? If you'd like to work on improved designs, I can send
you the source file.

Regarding graphics, we have recently contracted a design agency to
improve our graphics, creating things more consistent with our branding,
like:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/LO_26_2-light.png

But of course, there's lots to do. Is there anything in particular
you've seen, that you'd like to work on, or could be improved?

Cheers!
Mike

Thanks Matt, please feel free to suggest some! We're very much a
"doers-decide" project :-) But our current approach is:

* Home users: THE private office suite. Doesn't share your data. You
control everything. No AI training from your docs or anything like that

* Orgs/governments: local control over your infrastructure. Things work
even if datacenters go down. Security benefits.

Note that "free" as in "zero cost" is not the main messaging point now
(although it's still vitally important to many).

Great! Here is the source file:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/0/08/Schools_universities_flyer_altdesign.svg

You can edit it in Inkscape or similar. Having two flyers (one targeting
regular non-techie students, and one for more technical) would be great.
The more resources we have, the better!

We also have this migration flyer, with an old design and text, that
we'd like to update:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/6/6f/EN_Migration.odg

Maybe if you have an idea for a better design, and
[email protected] can improve the text, we'll have
something really good to hand out at events where orgs and government
bodies are present...

Thanks for your offer to help! You wrote your response yesterday
evening, after I had finished checking my emails, and I saw it this

are a small team with extremely limited resources, so please always give

We have several audiences, like in general in the office suite market:

* Home users
* Corporate users (although we tend to point those to the commercial
ecosystem, especially for support)
* Local governments / government departments (we've seen more activity
here recently)
* Potential contributors to LibreOffice (after all, having many people
using the suite is nice -- but if nobody is contributing, no new

Is there anything in particular you'd like to focus on, or something you

Great, thanks for offering to help! We have flyers that we hand out at
events, in various languages, such as:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/04/23/libreoffice-flyers-for-schools-and-universities-help-us-to-hand-them-out/

And a more modern design:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/07/15/libreoffice-flyer-for-schools-and-universities-extra-design/

What do you think? If you'd like to work on improved designs, I can send
you the source file.

Regarding graphics, we have recently contracted a design agency to
improve our graphics, creating things more consistent with our branding,
like:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/LO_26_2-light.png

But of course, there's lots to do. Is there anything in particular
you've seen, that you'd like to work on, or could be improved?

Cheers!

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Flyer design and text about "digital sovereignty"

2025-12-01 Thread strange . flute9055
It looks like I might have a bit of time to have a look at this.

Two questions:

1. Is there a page/post/something about aspects of digital sovereignty we're
talking about? We can't cram *everything* into a single flyer.

2. Who are likely to be the readers of this? Different audiences will need the
info framed and pitched in different ways.

In short - what are we trying to achieve here? Better info for managers? IT
managers? individual users? The words and design will be different in each
case. One generic set of copy and design won't do the job.

thanks

Matt

The mailing list does not allow attachment, so there is nothing attached
to your message (if there was something). In order to share a document,
you should upload it to a drive in the cloud, and provide a link.

Of course! LibreOffice is very much a doers-decide project, so if anyone
wants to work on other flyer ideas, that's welcome :-) As a starting
point, there are older designs of flyers about enterprise usage and
migrating to LibreOffice (in various languages) on our wiki:

I think a lot of the text content is still relevant, so it would be
great if someone wants to take these older designs and make them more

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Flyer design and text about "digital sovereignty"

2025-12-01 Thread Vinicius Duarte Creative Designer
Good afternoon.

After reviewing your recent communications, I took the liberty of preparing
a layout proposal for your newsletters.

The files are in A4 format and provided in high resolution, suitable both
for digital distribution and for printing purposes.

The changes were limited to reorganizing the elements in order to give
greater emphasis to the images featuring people and to reinforce the
message of freedom.

I hope this proposal meets your expectations and will be pleased to receive
your feedback.

Kind regards,

Vinicius Duarte - Creative Designer

Of course! LibreOffice is very much a doers-decide project, so if anyone
wants to work on other flyer ideas, that's welcome :-) As a starting
point, there are older designs of flyers about enterprise usage and
migrating to LibreOffice (in various languages) on our wiki:

I think a lot of the text content is still relevant, so it would be
great if someone wants to take these older designs and make them more
modern and fresh...

Hi Mike,

Here is a copy idea for the flyer.

Tools and knowledge can be made available to anyone.

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is designed to:

   - Be available to use without payment
   - Be transparent, with its code and operations visible
   - Operate impartially, without built-in bias toward specific outcomes

*Proprietary software sets updates, pricing, and features, including
built-in AI decisions. **O*

Or you can just send me plain text to add in.

[libreoffice-marketing] Flyer design and text about "digital sovereignty"

2025-11-27 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone – here's a project we can work on together. You know that
we have flyers about LibreOffice and TDF that we hand out at events.
Well, we'd like to make one about "digital sovereignty" (or however
you'd like to call it – basically doing and storing things locally using
FOSS, rather than handing money and data to proprietary companies that
are often overseas).

We have some existing flyer designs, such as:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/04/23/libreoffice-flyers-for-schools-and-universities-help-us-to-hand-them-out/

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/07/15/libreoffice-flyer-for-schools-and-universities-extra-design/

We can tweak the layout, but the main thing is to update the text to
talk about the benefits of "digital sovereignty" (or public money for
public code, or whatever). Let me know your ideas 😊

R: [libreoffice-marketing] Days which could be turned into LibreOffice events

2025-08-05 Thread Paolo Debortoli
Hi. Good ideas.
I also suggested to promoter the project in schools and universities
(involving directly universities and researchers would be a great goal).
Some ideas could be partecipating in events, organizing courses and
demonstrations (e.g. how to write a dissertation in LibreOffice, including
tables, formulas, database...).
Another idea could be giving printed manuals to public libraries in order to
make the project more visibile and attract curiosity.
In the future maybe establishing prizes e.g. for students to solved some
problema or a LibreOffice summer of code. But It will take time and money.
Making a link or post like 'develop with as' somewhere (I Guess somebody would
join, but doesn't know how).
Or I don't know.

2025-07-18 Thread Thomas Wade
Hi Everyone,

Two products I know of are Buffer and Hootsuite, both have free tiers and
let you post to multiple social media accounts at once.

Buffer lets you have two accounts, and I'd need to check Hootsuite's
current free tier.

Thomas

Hi everyone,

This discussion has prompted me to look at libreoffices other social media.

There's a constant stream of content on Facebook, content that would be good
enough to republish as is on LinkedIn.

Is anyone here responsible for Facebook? We could just post the same things on
LinkedIn.

There's plenty of social media monitoring tools with free tiers that would save
us needing to double handle posts.

Let me know what you think of this idea, it's an easy way to scale up our
presence on LinkedIn without too much extra work.

[libreoffice-marketing] LinkedIn page

2025-07-16 Thread Aidan Horn
Hi LibreOffice Marketing Team

This is my first time volunteering for LibreOffice. I started using
computers in high school in 2009, and now I am a software engineer, using R
mainly, and a bit of Python and SQL. I use Ubuntu about 99% of the time,
for example Ubuntu Desktop on my desktop and laptop. I haven't used any MS
Office subscription for two years already. I am quite passionate about
Office being a waste of money, which is what is driving me to help
contribute to the success of LibreOffice. I am intending on starting with
the marketing side first, as my programming languages are high-level.

I see that you have guidelines about going to conferences, but my concern
is about reaching the mass of people who aren't experts on the computer. I
feel that there would be a lot of value in using social media well.
Facebook is getting old (I say this while I actively administrate a few
Facebook groups with over 15 000 members each), but I find LinkedIn
professional and a high-quality social media platform. I see that the
LinkedIn page at
https://www.linkedin.com/company/libreoffice/posts/?feedView=all only has
one post, and I am willing to be added to the team for the LinkedIn page,
so that posts can be created more frequently.

I also think a WhatsApp Channel would be a fantastic way to reach young
people. A WhatsApp Channel scales very well, includes analytics, and is
very easy to use. For clarification, this is the definition of a WhatsApp
Channel: https://faq.whatsapp.com/549900560675125 . I am not talking about
a Community for the public. To give an example of how this can scale, the
World Economic Forum has over two million followers on its WhatsApp Channel:

Good evening,
thank you for your availability, i am attending the faculty programming and
management of information systems at the university of Perugia, the exam
subject course is open source lab taught by professor Marina Latini. the
exam is July 10 and a direct contribution to an open source project will be
part of the assessment. I found her remote presentation on Nov. 27
interesting and would like to contribute in this area. I always make myself
available for a video call or call.
Thanks

Ciao Andrea, I am answering in English as this is the official language
of the project, but I am Italian and based in Italy. I am co-leading the
marketing activities at LibreOffice, which means that I will be in any
case involved - either directly or indirectly - with your contributions.

From your email it is impossible to detect which university your are
studying at, and which faculty. You mention an exam, but not which exam.
In order to understand how to better mentor you, you should provide
these information.

Also, it would be important to understand your timing, as we are
approaching the summer and several people will be leaving for vacations
during July and August. I will be away from July 1st to July 12.

We can have a video or phone chat to speed up the process, so please let
me know when you will be available until next Monday to find a slot in
my agenda.

Best regards, Italo

2025-03-20 Thread Italo Vignoli
Hi Ravi, document freedom is one important topic in 2025, as it is the
20th anniversary of ODF as an OASIS standard. Another important topic is
digital sovereignty, whch is connected to document freedom. From the
technical point of view, the concept of LibreOffice Technology.

You can find several general slide decks to use as a source for your
presentation on Nextcloud, with videos explaining how to use the slide
decks: https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/kRB7KTqyD8LeHki.

Of course, if you need other slides, please ask (I have hundreds of
slides to share, for many different topics).

Best regards, Italo

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Tariff Inspired LibreOffice Uptake in Canada

2025-03-19 Thread crusader222
I appreciate Mike Saunders's "politically neutral" promotional approach.
In addition to privacy and data control, I believe adding financial impact
would give the message a significant boost. Paying [increasing] annual
subscriptions year after year doesn't make much/any sense to the average
office software user and small businesses.

Given that everyone understands the language of money, such a message can
be promoted internationally, hopefully with good results.

2025-03-18 Thread Kazuo Ohzeki
Dear Ravi Dwivedi,

It is a good idea to submut kde.in.
I think the topics will vary depending on the level of understanding of
OpenSource among the audience at the KDE meeting.

By the way, we will also be holding an international conference on AI,
ICAITD, in Tokyo, Japan, from June 1st to 4th.

https://icaitd.com ; Would you be so kind as to give a talk about
OpenSource and LibreOffice there? I think the audience will understand
OpenSource but may not be very knowledgeable about it. New features of
LibreOffice would also be useful. I have attended FrOSCon2007/2009 in
Germany, and would like to make use of the good points of open source.

Best regards,

As we don't track users we can't say for sure. I've just looked at the

We (TDF) prefer not to get involved in current affairs politics in our
marketing and communications, but I hinted at this recently, which got a
lot of likes and shares:

https://fosstodon.org/@libreoffice/114155438902601123

I like the point made by Jorge in his reply to your message: "promote
all FOSS products as stateless belonging to the global community". Maybe
this is a message we can craft -- but again, without getting into
specifics about certain countries or politicians. Maybe something for
the blog and social media like:

"More and more people are getting concerned by the power and political
influence of tech giants. The world is changing, and people are looking
for options that respect their privacy and give them control over their
data. This is where free and open source software (FOSS) like
LibreOffice steps in: it doesn't belong to any one company or country,
but is truly international, made by communities across the world."

...that's a starting point. What do people think? :-)

BTW, crusader222, if you're interested in growing the LibreOffice
community and/or awareness in Canada, please let us know!

Cheers,
Mike

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Follow-Up: Urgent Assistance Needed with LibreOffice Installation and Corruption Issue

2025-02-23 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi,

You have sent your email to multiple mailing lists used by volunteers in
several sub-projects of the LibreOffice community. Those mailing lists
are used by the volunteers to coordinate their work, to give the world a
free office suite. Sending unrelated technical support requests to many
projects development lists is not good practice. The volunteers are very
busy there and can't provide one-to-one technical support.

For all help, please don't use the project coordination lists, but
instead use the community "Ask LibreOffice" website which is the place
to get help:

[libreoffice-marketing] Houston Barnett-Gearhart - Introduction

2024-09-25 Thread Houston Barnett-Gearhart
Hi all,

My name is Houston Barnett-Gearhart. I'm based out of San Diego,
California, USA.

I'm the Director of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) at an SEO agency
called Victorious, a role I've held for the last ~9 years. However, I've
been in the SEO industry for ~15 years.

Naturally, I'd like to tap into my SEO background to explore improving the
visibility of the libreoffice.org website in search engines for things like
"Microsoft Office alternatives" and the like. That said, I'm happy to lend
support wherever needed and have a wide range of marketing skills that I
can tap into.

Let me know if you have any questions or input on how to best support
y'all's efforts to date.

Thanks so much!

- Houston

I can fully understand Clocked Modular's reasoning and motivation, but I do
think Italo has summed up the situation well. Other office suites can handle
the currently recognised formats, even if imperfectly. This has got to be
better than an "unknown format" message when opening documents originating on

The file extension is part of the standard, so we can't change it
without going through the entire technical process, which would take at
least a couple of years, and in any case a marketing idea is not a good
reason to change it (which means that the proposal could be easily
rejected). Standards are complex, and are not following marketing needs
but user needs.

OTOH, there's been a lot of work over the last decade to spread

be very difficult. And that's just from the marketing side -- I'm not

Normally, it shouldn't change anything. When you install software, it
tells the OS which extensions it understands. Many applications change
the extensions they support when new versions come out. For example,
Guitar Pro supports .gp4, .gp5, .gp. and .gpx.

The real question is: will the extensions clash with well-known
extensions. For example, .pdt is "Printer Definition Table", .mdt is
used by Microsoft but seems to be an old extension. I didn't look at the
others.

Ignore price. It reeks of desperation.
Focus on value.

To take a potential a potential USP:

_You do You: Your Documents. Your Language. Your Way._

You own your documents.

You can write documents in your language.

** Unicode supports 159 of the 293 natural writing systems;

There are workarounds for most unsupported writing systems (^1);
There are workarounds for most unsupported languages (^2);
How easy it is to utilize those workarounds depends upon the writing

I think it would be better if privacy take place as primary USP.

Privacy should be paramount, for any number of reasons.
Explaining why that should be the case gets into politics, which is, at
best, a tricky scenario.

a) Cost can be measured in several different ways:

* The down payment one makes;
* The cash price of the item;
* How much it costs to learn to use the item;
* How much it costs to use the item;
* The total price of the item (cash price + interest);
* The cost of fixing the item to meet one's specifications;
* The cost of maintaining the item so that it continues to meet one's
specifications;
* The lifetime cost of the item (cash price + interest + fixing it to
meet specifications + maintenance costs + training costs + usage costs.)

b) Competing on price is a money losing proposition.
Competing on value is a profit making proposition.

By focusing of free qua gratis, one is competing exclusively on price.

cannot fail to have the best price performance compared with a paid-for product
even if its functionality is actually dreadful.

Friends,

Is it not smarter to talk about the Office suit with the highest price
performance ratio available, than about Free!

“LibreOffice is Free and Open Source Software” than will become
“LibreOffice is the Office suite with the highest price performance”

Free sounds cheep (also in quality), The highest price performance sounds
like a good quality deal.

Met vriendelijke groet,
With kind regards,

Interesting idea. I'd just be concerned of people only focusing on the
words "highest price" and ignoring the rest :-) Maybe I'm being
paranoid, but attention spans on social media are so low now...

In any case, the word "free" is problematic. People get Google Docs and
(in some cases) Microsoft Office/365 for "free". Other people associate
"free" with "stealing my data". So I think it's worth putting more
effort into promoting the privacy aspects of LibreOffice...

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] "Early adopter" status on official download page high profile problem

2024-07-20 Thread Italo Vignoli

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your notes. You are right. We have to improve the way we
communicate the two different releases on the download page, especially
for the majority of users, who do not understand technical subtleties.
We might change something for the announcement of 24.8.

I think that we should position the two different options in a way which
represents and advantage for the users, which have two options optimized
for their needs (100% more than competing office suites), one with more
features and the other more robust.

Given the reduced level of attention, any other information - especially
if asking for some technical background, and an understanding of what is
a software test and a software bug - is redundant, and there is a risk
that is perceived in a negative way.

Best, Italo

offer. So far, I don't see a major problem; the related but different topic of
possibly postponing EOL till the release of the next branch is not discussed
here.

In the current situation, 24.2.5 is advertised on the download page as "If you're a technology enthusiast, early adopter or
power user, this version is for you!", the same as previous bugfix releases of the same branch. And here is the problem. The
"early adopter" release it the only one offered to users visiting LibreOffice site. This created FUD, created by
ourselves. There are questions like [3], [4]; there appear advises confusingly suggesting that 24.2.4 may be preferred over
24.2.5 [5]. Even the release announcement of 24.2.5 [6] has "For users who don’t need the latest features and prefer a
version that has undergone more testing and bug fixing, The Document Foundation maintains a version with some months of
back-ported fixes" statement, without a direct reference to it. But the previous announcement [7] had "The current
release is LibreOffice 7.6.7 Community, but it will soon be replaced exactly by LibreOffice 24.2.4 when the new major release
LibreOffice 24.8 becomes available" statement, implying that 24.2.4 was meant to obtain "more tested" status.

Note that "more tested" is not simply "more tested than the other offering on this
download page", but - more importantly - results in a different target audience. And we must
make sure, that at the point when there is no second offering, our single offering has reached the
point of maturity to target those who need stability (note that practically, 24.2.5 is already
there), and that _it_is_marked_as_such_officially_ - both in release announcement, and on download

Hi Mike,

That's a good point. I've changed it to "The latest LibreOffice,
well-tested and suitable for all users."

We talked on the marketing Telegram channel about alternative wording,
especially when we go back to having two major releases offered...
