[MARMAM] New publication: Cetaceans off the western Eyre Peninsula, Great Australian Bight

2018-01-08 Thread Kerstin Bilgmann
Dear All,

We are pleased to announce the online publication of our paper in Deep Sea
Research II: Topical Studies in Oceanography.

The article will appear in a special issue on the Great Australian Bight:

Kerstin Bilgmann, Guido J. Parra, Luciana M. Möller (2017). Occurrence,
distribution and abundance of cetaceans off the western Eyre Peninsula in the
Great Australian Bight. Deep Sea Research II
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dsr2.2017.11.006

Abstract

This study provides the first assessment of the occurrence, distribution and
abundance of cetaceans in shelf and coastal waters off the western Eyre
Peninsula, eastern Great Australian Bight, South Australia. We undertook aerial
line transect surveys to estimate the abundance of common dolphins, and to
assess the occurrence and distribution of other small and large cetaceans. Two
along shore surveys were also flown to assess occurrence of endangered southern
right whales in coastal waters. Five cetacean species were detected: seven
southern right whales, three humpback whales, one minke whale (unknown
species), 71 schools of common dolphins, and 14 schools of bottlenose dolphins.
Abundance of common dolphins was estimated to be 20,000–22,000 using distance
sampling methods with densities of 0.67–0.73 dolphin/km2. Comparisons of common
dolphin densities off the Eyre Peninsula in the eastern GAB with other regions
around the world show that shelf waters off the Eyre Peninsula represent an
important habitat for common dolphins.

Key words: marine ecology, conservation, coastal waters, continental shelves,
biodiversity, aerial survey, distance sampling, dolphin, whale

[MARMAM] Whale and Dolphin Conservation (NA) Field Research Internship

2018-01-08 Thread Monica Pepe
WDC North America, located in Plymouth, Massachusetts, offers internships and
field volunteer positions, providing research, policy, education and advocacy
experience in working for an international non-profit organization. We will be
accepting applications for our spring positions (beginning as early as April
1st) until midnight EST on Sunday, February 4th, 2018 and summer positions
(beginning as early as May 1st) until midnight EST on Sunday, March 4th, 2018.

Internships are offered to qualified applicants throughout the year, allowing
each participant to become proficient at field data collection, educational
outreach, and conservation issues of marine mammals. Interns may also assist
staff in completing various tasks pertaining to our focal projects.

The WDC internship/volunteer program aims to give participants exposure to all
aspects of working with a conservation non-profit organization. Successful
candidates are tasked with everything from field research to office
administration. All interns gain experience with public speaking by interacting
with passengers aboard whale watching vessels, participating in school talks,
and other public outreach events throughout the year. Additionally, interns
will assist with written communication efforts including social media, blogs,
and supporter directed communications. Other potential opportunities include
attending workshops/conferences and responding to stranded marine mammals,
though these are not guaranteed opportunities. This program exposes interns to
real world experiences that will help them develop the skills and understanding
needed to succeed in the field of marine mammal conversation and research.
Participants will gain an in-depth perspective of this field and a better
understanding of where their interests lie. Through this internship, a number
of skills are developed including analytical, organizational, interpersonal,

sightings of humpback, finback, and minke whales, as well as other notable
marine wildlife. The frequency of fieldwork is weather dependent. Days not in
the field will be spent at the office uploading photos and data into our photo
identification database or working on any tasks that may be assigned.
At the end of the program our hope is that interns will be able to leave with a
comprehensive understanding of both the exciting and routine aspects of what it
takes to research and conserve marine mammals.

There is no fee or compensation for the internship/volunteer positions.
Participants must arrange for their own transportation to and from Plymouth and
provide their own food. Limited housing with a shared bedroom is available on
site for a monthly fee of $300 USD, which is strictly to offset the cost of
housing. Assistance can be provided in finding alternate housing at the request
of the applicant, and those that can provide their own housing are encouraged
to apply.

WDC is willing to help qualified students obtain credits for the program
through their college or university. The program requires a minimum commitment
of 12 weeks, with the possibility of extending the term on a case-by-case
basis. The internship is a full time position requiring open and flexible
availability.

[MARMAM] Marine Mammals Research Expedition in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, March 2018

2018-01-08 Thread aylin akkaya

Marine Mammals Research Association (www.dmad.org.tr) is offering you the
unique opportunity to join its Marine Wildlife Research Expedition within the
north Levantine Sea. The expedition aims to explore areas where there is little
known with heavy human foot prints from to the coast to its deep waters. Due to
a lack of scientific research, there are little to no conservation measures in
action to protect Mediterranean waters and their inhabitants. All of the target
species are categorized by the IUCN Red List as Threatened or Data Deficient.
It is therefore vital to research and monitor these populations in order to
work towards necessary conservation measures.

Species to Encounter

On this trip we are likely to encounter a variety of marine mammals, including
the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), striped dolphin (Stenella
coeruleoalba), short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), Risso’s dolphin
(Grampus griseus), sperm whale (Physeter microcephalus), Cuvier’s beaked whale
(Ziphius cavirostris) and fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), in addition to the
Mediterranean’s only pinniped species, the endangered Mediterranean monk seal
(Monachus monachus). Moreover, as our study areas are largely unexplored, there
is the potential to discover other cetacean species which are rarely found in
the Mediterranean basin such as Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae)!

The Skills You Will Learn;

· Conducting visual and acoustic surveys

·       Collecting behavioural data for sighted species

·       Carrying out the first live genetic sampling of beaked whales in the
Eastern Mediterranean waters.

· Mapping the hotspots of marine mammals

· Developing the first photo Identification catalogues of the sperm
whales and beaked whales in the Eastern Mediterranean

One of the objectives of our expedition is to help create and inspire
independent researchers, equipped with experience in up-to-date research
techniques.

The Training You Will Receive;

There will be a day of training before the survey route starts. Additionally,
each night we will organise a training on the below topics;

· General biology and ecology of marine megafauna of the Mediterranean
Sea

· Species identification

· Photo identification techniques

· Mapping techniques

· Behavioural sampling

Additionally, we will be equipped with  a hydrophone (underwater microphone)
and a genetic sampling dart gun. We will use this equipment when possible
during our cetacean sightings, and you will have the opportunity to learn more
about them and hopefully a chance to use them yourself!

The Expedition Calendar

This scientific expedition is a part of a year round study and will be
conducted on the last two weeks of March 2018.

Note: The exact routes can be subject to change to take into account weather
and other safety factors.

As such, flights should not be booked until these dates have been confirmed,
unless they are fully flexible tickets.

The cost

As we are a non-profit organisation with limited financial resources, there is
a monitory fee attached to this journey. The cost of the expedition is EUR 900
per person.

This cost includes:

· Full survey and equipment training

· Use of research equipment

· All food and accommodation on board for the duration of your stay

· All safety equipment

· All cruising and sailing vignettes (cruising permits) for Turkey and
Greece.

· Insurance including public liability coverage

What is not included?

· Flights to and from start and end location

· Travel insurance (Mandatory, please provide proof)

· Food off board

· Accommodations onshore

What you should bring:

· Passport with any necessary visas for the countries you will be
visiting

· Sleeping bag

· Towel

· Binoculars

· Seasonal appropriate clothing, including waterproofs

· SOFT BAG as luggage, hard cases are not permitted on board

· Camera

· Sailing shoes are preferable.

· Sea sickness medication

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate 2 team members with the
willingness to learn, as well as motivated students and researchers who wish to
collect data for their university projects.

To apply send us your CV and cover letter to: i...@dmad.org.tr or
akkayaayl...@gmail.com before January 30th 2018.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU ON BOARD SOON

*BACKGROUND: *The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a
non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and
conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in
southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline
information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the
local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support
conservation measures and inform marine management policies.

The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus
delphis), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and Harbour porpoises
(Phocoena phocoena), although other species such as Minke whales
(Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) can
also be sighted.

AIMM Participants are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to
contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while
experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing
methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine
biologists for a period of time. All team members and participants share

*Marine Mammals of Maine 2018 Summer Internship Opportunity*

Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME) is a non-profit organization federally
authorized to respond to live and dead marine mammals and sea turtles
between Kittery and Rockland, Maine. MMoME covers some of the busiest seal
stranding coastline, totaling nearly 300 live and dead animals annually.
MMoME operates a pinniped triage and rehabilitation center. Our mission
also heavily encompasses research, education and outreach, and is dedicated
to raising awareness about marine mammals and environmental conservation.

MMoME is seeking 6 motivated, flexible and independent interns for the
months of May through August, or May through October. Interns and
volunteers are critical in fulfilling our mission, and are given the unique
opportunity to participate in a variety of activities. The internship is
based out of midcoast Maine (Harpswell), though travel throughout our
response region and the Northeast will be necessary. Interns must be
adaptable and comfortable with an unpredictable and changing work
environment as stranding response and patient care frequently change.
Interns will be required to dedicate a minimum of 40-50 hours per week to
the internship, and work holidays and weekends. This internship is unpaid,
though seasonal job opportunities are available in the area.

*KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*

· *ANIMAL RESPONSE:* Respond to live and dead cetacean and pinniped
strandings to collect Level A data, perform health assessments, and
monitor, relocate, collect for humane euthanasia, or rescue as triage and
rehabilitation resources allow. Carcass collection for disposal or necropsy
will also be required.

· *IN-HOUSE PATIENT CARE:* Assist with all aspects relating to the care of
sick, injured and abandoned pinnipeds undergoing short-term, or long-term
care at our center. Tasks range from meal prep, tube-feeding, assisting
with medical procedures, animal restraint for exams, running lab samples,
medical record maintenance, cleaning, and transport to long-term care
facilities.

· *NECROPSY:* Assist with necropsy of fresh dead pinnipeds and cetaceans,
and transport carcasses to partner organizations.

· *EDUCATION AND OUTREACH:* Give presentations to the public about the
organization, attend outreach events, and help create educational materials.

· *INDEPENDENT PROJECT:* Each intern will design an independent project
relating to education/outreach, a research project using MMoME data, social
media/technology/graphic design, or other aspects of marine mammal
response, care or non-profit work.

· *OTHER TASKS:* Additional time during this internship will be spent on
data entry, fundraising, maintenance of the triage center, and other tasks
as needed.

*REQUIREMENTS:*

· The internship is open to undergraduate students who are currently
enrolled in, or recently graduated (within 2 years) from an accredited
college or university (this internship is not yet designed for those
pursuing DVM degrees).

· The ideal candidate is working towards a career in marine mammal science,
veterinary technology, pre-veterinary, marine biology, environmental
education, or other related fields.

· Must commit to at least three months, and be available from May 15–
August 15, or October 15. MUST be able to start *no later than May 21st,
2018.*

· Must have a valid driver’s license, a reliable vehicle, and comfortable
driving a full size truck in urban and rural areas.

· Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and be
adaptable to a changing and unpredictable schedule.

· Individuals that are passionate, responsible, hardworking, eager to
learn, flexible, able to work under little supervision, and detail oriented
are encouraged to apply.

· Preference given to individuals with a demonstrated interest in marine
mammals, and are specifically interested in marine mammal response, rescue,
and care. Previous marine mammal experience or animal husbandry a plus.

*HOW TO APPLY:*
Please send a letter of interest, resume, contact information for two
references, and the specific dates you are available to i...@mmome.org by
February 1, 2018. Interviews will be conducted shortly after. We look
forward to your application for this exciting experience!

[MARMAM] **Reminder - Submissions of candidate IMMA areas of interest for the North East Indian Ocean and South East Asian Seas**

2018-01-08 Thread MMPATF IMMA
***Reminder - Submissions of candidate IMMA areas of interest for the North
East Indian Ocean and South East Asian Seas** *

Dear Subscribers,

This is an reminder for submissions of Important Marine Mammal Area (IMMA)
areas of interest in the North East Indian Ocean and South East Asian Seas.
The deadline for all submissions is by midnight *Sunday February 25th 2018*
.

The IMMA is a global initiative developed by the IUCN Joint SSC/WCPA Marine
Mammal Protected Areas Task Force (IUCN-MMPATF). The aim of IMMA
classification is to identify and delineate discrete areas of habitat
throughout the world's seas and oceans, important for one or more species
of marine mammal, that have the potential to be delineated and managed for
conservation. This will require the application of a standardized process
for the collation and categorization of evidence, using a consistent
protocol and agreed methodology.

The Mediterranean Sea and Pacific Islands regions were assessed in 2016 and
2017. The results of these workshops can now be accessed via the dedicated
IMMA e-Atlas facility www.marinemammalhabitat.org/imma-eatlas

The next region to be assessed by invited experts will be held in Kota
Kinabalu - Malaysia - during March 2018, at a specially convened Regional
IMMA Workshop for the North East Indian Ocean and South East Asian Seas. To
assist those participating experts to investigated where IMMAs may be
located the IUCN-MMPATF would like to invite interested parties to submit
proposals using the IMMA standard web platform, which can be accessed
through the following link - https://goo.gl/XydMzo - please be advised that
you can only submit one proposal per survey taken. However, should you wish
to submit more than one proposal, please complete this survey multiple
times using the same link provided.

All submissions will be collated and presented to participating experts at
the North East Indian Ocean and South East Asian Seas Regional IMMA
Workshop in March 2018. The IUCN-MMPATF would like to thank you for your
interest in the IMMA initiative. Further information about IMMAs can be
found at the Task Force homepage (www.marinemammalhabitat.org/) and on the
Task Force IMMA Facebook page (tinyurl.com/zr9rvf4).
