Brian Whitaker says:

"Winning a Pulitzer obviously means a reporter’s work has impressed the judges
but it’s not necessarily a guarantee of factual accuracy."

The same applies to Roy Gutman. Gutman is not a reliable source. He visited
the Turkish-occupied part of northern Syria as a guest of the Turkish
government, where he made false accusations of ethnic cleansing by the Syrian
Democratic Forces, while failing to notice the ethnic cleansing being carried
out by the Turkish army and its allied militias.

An relevant experience on a completely different issue:

Years ago, I was very active in a campaign to win parole for a woman named
Theresa Cruz who was serving 17-life for her participation in the non-fatal
shooting of her abusive husband. Our position was that this was
self-defense.

In the course of this campaign we met with California State Senator Sheila
Kuehl. The issue of spousal abuse was #1 on Kuehl's list; she was known as
THE California politician who fought on that issue, and she promised us the
moon as far as what she would do. In particular, she was going to fight the
Parole Board to grant Theresa parole. Months and months went by and she did
nothing. Finally, nearly a year later, we were able to talk with Kuehl's
chief of staff. "Well, you have to understand that Senator Kuehl has to
work with these people (the parole board)," she told us. In other words,
she was part of the system and wasn't going to buck it.

It's all the same with all these people, including the "progressives" (like
Kuehl). Until we have workers' representatives, it's just going to go on
and on and on.

John Reimann
P.S. Eventually, through a combination of public pressure and the eventual
agreement of the ex-husband, Theresa did get parole and she's free and
doing well to this day.

"The Belgian colony of Congo offered one of the most elaborate “models”,
so to speak, of colonial exploitation – a “model” nevertheless quite
comparable to what was going on in the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa. The
Congo was turned into a huge labour camp ruled by terror. A common
practice when farmers failed to collect enough rubber from wild rubber
trees, was to take their families hostage, or to kill them and put their
severed hands on display in the village as a warning. It was estimated
that over the 4 decades until 1920, ten million Africans died in the
Belgian Congo – half of the initial population. Over the same period,
companies exploiting concessions which often covered tens of thousands
of square miles, multiplied their original investments 20-fold!"

I was always appalled me by the tendency for the Political Marxists to
describe the Congo as "precapitalist" because labor was based on
coercion rather than markets.

What do you think the rubber was being used for? Automobile tires,
that's what. Without forced labor in the Congo, Belgium would not have
been able to supply tires to Renault.

In a word, Political Marxism has failed to understand capitalism
dialectically.

My fixation on British politics continues though I do of course not neglect
keeping an eye on things elsewhere, especially Australia. However,
politics here seem to be stuck in the usual go slow. We have a
conservative government which is slowly disengaging itself from
neoliberalism in rhetoric but of course does not have an alternative
program. Tories can administer a Keynesian settlement but they will never
initiate one.

So the hegemony of neoliberalism has been threatened but there is no clear
alternative paradigm being put in place. The onward march of Corbyn has yet
to really impinge on public consciousness. Within the Green, though, the
left wing senator Lee Rhiannon has raised the success of Corbyn in pushing
explicitly socialist politics. Were Corbyn to make a serious break through
soon, then that would call forth some kind of leftism here.

But Corbyn himself still has to manage the contradictions within the
Parliamentary Labor Party (PLP). It is still a hostile force as the recent
split over Europe shows.

My own reading of this is that the Blairites in the PLP have grown alarmed
at the strength of Corbynism. Corbyn's speech at Glastonbury marked I
think a deep change in how he is perceived in the popular culture. From
that alarm came a preemptive strike led by Chuka Umunna a right winger. The
challenge has been seen as premature by some, but I think that is to fail
to understand that the Blairites are in a panic. They think, I believe,
that they must act now before the Corbyn phenomenon is unstoppable. Hence
Umunna's decision to defy his party and put up an amendment around access
to the single market in the Brexit negotiations.

I do not think the maneuver will succeed. Corbyn's popularity will continue
to grow and he will form the next government. But it will be a crisis
government and his own party will betray him over some crisis or other.

How it will all play out is of course unclear. I just feel that the
current youth have not experienced a decisive political defeat and they are
gearing up to have a go. There will be a trial of strength between capital
and the rest of us. Of that I am certain. Moreover I remain reasonably
confident that we mi ght even win.

comradely

One of the big polItical debates on the left has been around the ‘Brenner
thesis’. Robert Brenner is part of a school of Marxists who concentrate on
changes within Europe, especially changed social relations on the land, to
explain the rise of capitalism. While Marx pays a lot of attention to this
in ‘Capital’, particularly in his discussion of primitive accumulation,
Marx also emphasises the role of foreign plunder, including the enslavement
of many millions of Africans (a substantial number of whom died while being
taken across the Atlantic by European slave merchants), in the rise of
capitalism.

One of the good things about this article is that it deals with the central
role played by plunder of what is now the Third World in the rise of
capitalism. Uneven development of different parts of the world isn’t just a
natural occurrence but a *necessary prerequisite* for the emergence of
industrial capitalism in the West, while the rise of imperialism
copper-fastens such uneven development, ensuring that huge swathes of the
world get permanent under-development. Well, permanent as long as
capitalism remains.

Late one night several years ago, I got out of my car on a dark midtown
Atlanta street when a man standing fifteen feet away pointed a gun at me
and threatened to “blow my head off.” I’d been parked outside my new
apartment in a racially mixed but mostly white neighborhood that I
didn’t consider a high-crime area. As the man repeated the threat, I
suppressed my first instinct to run and fearfully raised my hands in
helpless submission. I begged the man not to shoot me, repeating over
and over again, “It’s all right, it’s okay.”

The man was a uniformed police officer. As a criminal defense attorney,
I knew that my survival required careful, strategic thinking. I had to
stay calm. I’d just returned home from my law office in a car filled
with legal papers, but I knew the officer holding the gun had not
stopped me because he thought I was a young professional. Since I was a
young, bearded black man dressed casually in jeans, most people would
not assume I was a lawyer with a Harvard Law School degree. To the
officer threatening to shoot me I looked like someone dangerous and guilty.

In this second part of an interview, we discuss the importance of
profitability in understanding the state of capitalist economies and

Quantum mechanics has survived nearly 100 years, and the unorthodox
theory remains fabulous. Experiments routinely verify its predictions,
and the normative theories invented to reform it have failed. Physicists
continue to uncover new ways to adapt its mysteries to information
