Louis asks if David Harvey is correct on the need to keep capitalism afloat? 
The simple answer is No. Richard Seymour is a great writer and analyst. But he 
has a soft spot for Harvey, in imperialism as well, which is completely 
unwarranted. They set up a straw man, the immediate collapse of capitalism, and 
 then say, what would the left do to prevent human catastrophe. How is this an 
argument? Struggle against it. Pressure the state however you can. And build up 
our own capacities, through collective self-help actions, as are happening 
around the world. Yes, let's save a system that is killing us, every damned 
day, in every way imaginable. That makes a lot of sense. Shades of that 
charlatan, Yanis Varoufakis. I have seen John Smith's criticisms of Harvey. are 
these precious, as Seymour says the criticisms of Harvey's recent video are 
now? Precious? Give me a break.

I guess the implications of the need to "prop up" capitalism is that when
capitalism collapses since the possibility of having the political strength
to create socialism is NIL (maybe that's not true in Europe and elsewhere
but certainly one could make that case about the US) then we are faced with
Rosa Luxembourg's alternative -- BARBARISM --- which many dystopian novels
can describe in excruciating detail.

Earlier in the month I caught a few minutes of “Gone With the Wind,” a 
film I had only seen once before in the 1950s with my parents, when I 
was about 12 years old or so. I only remembered two things. One was the 
long tracking shot of the wounded Confederate soldiers in Atlanta that 
was meant to evoke pity. The other was the newly impoverished Scarlett 
O’Hara eating radishes plucked from the ground and vowing never to be 
poor again. I imagine that in 1957, this scene might have resonated with 
my parents who had vivid memories of going without during the Great 
Depression. Such is the troubled legacy of a film that can make such 
Jewish working liberals and Americans from all backgrounds feel sorry 
for slave-owners at the very time the Civil Rights movement was emerging.
