Comrade,

Watching just an awesome recital by the couple
. Banjos with a "Black Lives
Matter" sign as background. They promised to stream it for a few weeks.
The first part is a Jazz trio that did not interest me as I came to hear
Bela. Me and V have seen him at least twice, maybe 3,4 times.

If only interested in this part its easy to navigate to it just move cursor
to almost the end that isn't. Their performance is maybe 25 - 30 mins long.

They do a song on the indigenous. She sings one in Chinese that she
learned during an extended stay in Sichuan. They duet on a Hank, Sr tune.
Sing an Abbey Lincoln
 tune
introduced by pointing at her activism. Last thing "Take me to Harlem"
with great lyrics but, I think, musically missing something. Maybe a
gospel choir.

Comrade, I am far from a musicologist but know what I like when I hear it.

In the 60's the soundtrack to our lives was cause and effect of our
struggles, protests, movements. There must be a music of this movement.
Maybe musics. But Fleck's incursion of his politics into this Allegheny
world sounds a tocsin for others to follow. Not just bluegrass but C,
folk, rap, R, classical, jazz and blues.

We must find, encourage and support our troubadors-to-be. I know one
personally. Devin Hoff is a world-class bassist
who shifts through the varied
music scenes listed above with grace, fluidity, mastery of himself and his
instrument, bass. Even better is his politics. Even better is the man.
He currently lives and will soon be active again in NYC, hopefully the
C19thing will be beaten even though it is 'managed' by a rudy-poot
nincompoop.

But as for Bela Fleck and Abigail Wishburn's presentation all that was
missing, besides the gospel choir, was Doc and Merle Watson but, alas, both
are gone.

NY Times, June 27, 2020
The Black Officer Who Detained George Floyd Had Pledged to Fix the Police
By Kim Barker

MINNEAPOLIS — There were two black men at the scene of the police
killing in Minneapolis last month that roiled the nation. One, George
Floyd, was sprawled on the asphalt, with a white officer’s knee on his
neck. The other black man, Alex Kueng, was a rookie police officer who
held his back as Mr. Floyd struggled to breathe.

Mr. Floyd, whose name has been painted on murals and scrawled on protest
signs, has been laid to rest. Mr. Kueng, who faces charges of aiding and
abetting in Mr. Floyd’s death, is out on bail, hounded at the
supermarket by strangers and denounced by some family members.

Long before Mr. Kueng was arrested, he had wrestled with the issue of
police abuse of black people, joining the force in part to help protect
people close to him from police aggression. He argued that diversity
could force change in a Police Department long accused of racism.

He had seen one sibling arrested and treated poorly, in his view, by
sheriff’s deputies. He had found himself defending his decision to join
the police force, saying he thought it was the best way to fix a broken
system. He had clashed with friends over whether public demonstrations
could actually make things better.

“He said, ‘Don’t you think that that needs to be done from the inside?’”
his mother, Joni Kueng, recalled him saying after he watched protesters
block a highway years ago. “That’s part of the reason why he wanted to
become a police officer — and a black police officer on top of it — is
to bridge that gap in the community, change the narrative between the
officers and the black community.”

As hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated against the police after
Mr. Floyd’s killing on May 25, Mr. Kueng became part of a national
debate over police violence toward black people, a symbol of the very
sort of policing he had long said he wanted to stop.

Derek Chauvin, the officer who placed his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck for
more than eight minutes, has been most widely associated with the case.
He faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter;
Mr. Kueng and two other former officers were charged with aiding and
abetting the killing. At 26, Mr. Kueng was the youngest and least
experienced officer at the scene, on only his third shift as a full officer.

The arrest of Mr. Kueng, whose mother is white and whose father was from
Nigeria, has brought anguish to his friends and family. “It’s a gut
punch,” Ms. Kueng said. “Here you are, you’ve raised this child, you
know who he is inside and out. We’re such a racially diverse family. To
be wrapped up in a racially motivated incident like this is just
unfathomable.”

Two of Mr. Kueng’s siblings, Taylor and Radiance, both of whom are
African-American, called for the arrests of all four officers, including
their brother. They joined protests in Minneapolis.

In a Facebook Live video, Taylor Kueng, 21, appeared with the head of
the local N.A.A.C.P. to speak of the injustice that befell Mr. Floyd,
acknowledging being related to Mr. Kueng but never mentioning his name.

Mr. Kueng’s sister Radiance posted a video of Mr. Floyd’s final minutes
on Facebook. “Just broke my heart,” she wrote. In an interview, she said
that as a black man, her brother should have intervened. She said she
planned to change her last name in part because she did not want to be
associated with her brother’s actions.

“I don’t care if it was his third day at work or not,” she said. “He
knows right from wrong.”

A Full House

Through his life, Mr. Kueng straddled two worlds, black and white.

Mr. Kueng, whose full name is J. Alexander Kueng (pronounced “king”),
was raised by his mother, whom he lived with until last year. His father
was absent.

As a child, Mr. Kueng sometimes asked for siblings. Joni Kueng, who
lived in the Shingle Creek neighborhood in north Minneapolis, signed up
with an African-American adoption agency.

When Alex was 5, Ms. Kueng brought home a baby boy who had been
abandoned at a hospital. Alex soon asked for a sister; Radiance arrived
when he was 11. Taylor and a younger brother came in 2009, when Alex was
about 16.

Radiance Kueng, 21, said their adoptive mother did not talk about race.
“Race was not really a topic in our household, unfortunately,” she said.
“For her adopting as many black kids as she did — I didn’t get that
conversation from her. I feel like that should have been a conversation
that was had.”

Growing up, Mr. Kueng and his family made repeated trips to Haiti,

Question -- Does this editorial indicate that the ruling class has already
soured on Trump and this is the first step towards persuading the
Republicans to dump him and try to win with Pence (or at least save the
Senate?) ---

OR is this a "cri de coeur" from the true believers who desperately want
Trump to win again and are trying to SHOCK him into running a REAL campaign?

I'm not sure, just reading the editorial --

(but one thing I AM sure about --- It sure is FUN to watch the "thieves
fall out" (though thieves is much too mild -- it's more like the ending of
Reservoir Dogs [we can hope, right?])

The first time I heard a great Mozart opera, I remember how sexist and classist
its plot was. I left the music hall filled with wonder at how good the music
was and how socially defective the plot and lyrics were. Nobody is suggesting
that we throw Mozart out the window. One can focus on the beautiful while not
forgetting the ugly and the context within which it was written.

Combine closed polling stations, increased Covid-19 numbers, eliminating
mail-in ballots in some states, and the possible closure of the USPS this
fall (making mail-in ballots impossible), and you get a Republican election
strategy that might possibly work.

The Trump Referendum
Wall Street Journal, Eastern edition; New York, N.Y; June 26, 2020

President Trump may soon need a new nickname for "Sleepy Joe" Biden. How
does President-elect sound? On present trend that's exactly what Mr.
Biden will be on Nov. 4, as Mr. Trump heads for what could be an
historic repudiation that would take the Republican Senate down with him.

Mr. Trump refuses to acknowledge what every poll now says is true: His
approval rating has fallen to the 40% or below that is George H.W. Bush
and Jimmy Carter territory. They're the last two Presidents to be denied
a second term. This isn't 2017 when Mr. Trump reached similar depths
after failing to repeal ObamaCare while blaming Mitch McConnell and Paul
Ryan. He regained support with tax reform and a buoyant economy that
really was lifting all incomes.

---

Now the election is four months away, voters know him very well, and Mr.
Trump has reverted to his worst form. His record fighting the
coronavirus is better than his critics claim after a bad start in late
February and March. He mobilized federal resources to help hard-hit
states, especially New York.

But he wasted his chance to show leadership by turning his daily
pandemic pressers into brawls with the bear-baiting press and any
politician who didn't praise him to the skies. Lately he has all but
given up even talking about the pandemic when he might offer realism and
hope about the road ahead even as the country reopens. His default now
is defensive self-congratulation.

The country also wants firm but empathetic leadership after the death of
George Floyd, but Mr. Trump offers combative tweets that inflame. Not
long ago Mr. Trump tweeted that a 75-year old man who was pushed by
police in Buffalo might be an antifa activist. He offered no evidence.

Americans don't like racial enmity and they want their President to
reduce it. Mr. Trump has preached racial harmony on occasion, but he
gives it all back with riffs that misjudge the national moment. His "law
and order" message might resonate if disorder and rioting continue
through the summer, but only if Mr. Trump is also talking about racial
reconciliation and opportunity for all.

Mr. Trump has little time to recover. The President's advisers say that
he trailed Hillary Clinton by this much at this point in 2016, that they
haven't had a chance to define Mr. Biden, and that as the election nears
voters will understand the binary choice. Perhaps. But in 2016 Mrs.
Clinton was as unpopular as Mr. Trump, while Mr. Biden is not.

Mr. Biden hasn't even had to campaign to take a large lead. He rarely
leaves his Delaware basement, he dodges most issues, and his only real
message is that he's not Donald Trump. He says he's a uniter, not a
divider. He wants racial peace and moderate police reform. He favors
protests but opposes riots and violence.

Some Democrats are literally advising Mr. Biden to barely campaign at
all. Eliminate the risk of a mental stumble that will raise doubts about
his declining capacity that was obvious in the primaries. Let Mr. Trump
remind voters each day why they don't want four more years of tumult and
narcissism.

Mr. Trump's base of 35% or so will never leave, but the swing voters who
stood by him for three and half years has fallen away in the last two
months. This includes suburban women, independents, and seniors who took
a risk on him in 2016 as an outsider who would shake things up. Now
millions of Americans are close to deciding that four more years are
more risk than they can stand.

---

As of now Mr. Trump has no second-term agenda, or even a message beyond
four more years of himself. His recent events in Tulsa and Arizona were
dominated by personal grievances. He resorted to his familiar themes
from 2016 like reducing immigration and denouncing the press, but he
offered nothing for those who aren't already persuaded.

Mr. Trump's advisers have an agenda that would speak to opportunity for
Americans of all races -- school choice for K-12, vocational education
as an alternative to college, expanded health-care choice, building on
the opportunity zones in tax reform, and more. The one issue on which
voters now give him an edge over Mr. Biden is the economy. An agenda to
revive the economy after the pandemic, and restore the gains for workers
of his first three years, would appeal to millions.

Perhaps Mr. Trump lacks the self-awareness and discipline to make this
case. He may be so thrown off by his falling polls that he simply can't
do it. If that's true he should understand that he is headed for a
defeat that will reward

It seemed clear to me when Louis posted the Agee review, it was not to further
our understanding of the movie, or intended to serve as a review, but rather to
illustrate the racist support for the movie. With that purpose in mind, it was
useful to post it.

James Agee was no pedestrian hack.

From Wikipedia:

After graduation, Agee was hired by the Time Inc. as a reporter, and
moved to New York City, where he wrote for Fortune magazine in
1932-1937, although he is better known for his later film criticism in
Time and The Nation. In 1934, he published his only volume of poetry,
Permit Me Voyage, with a foreword by Archibald MacLeish.

In the summer of 1936, during the Great Depression, Agee spent eight
weeks on assignment for Fortune with photographer Walker Evans, living
among sharecroppers in Alabama. While Fortune did not publish his
article, Agee turned the material into a book titled Let Us Now Praise
Famous Men (1941).[6] It sold only 600 copies before being remaindered.
Another manuscript from the same assignment discovered in 2003, titled
Cotton Tenants, is believed to be the essay submitted to Fortune
editors. The 30,000 word text, accompanied by photographs by Walker
Evans, was published as a book in June 2013. John Jeremiah Sullivan
writes in the Summer 2013 issue of BookForum that, "This is not merely
an early, partial draft of Famous Men, in other words, not just a
different book; it's a different Agee, an unknown Agee. Its excellence
should enhance his reputation."[7] A significant difference between the
works is the use of original names in Cotton Tenants; Agee assigned
fictional names to the subjects of Famous Men in order to protect their
identity.[8]
