Re: [Marxism] Fwd: Bolivia Passes Law To Allow 10-Year-Olds To Work
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Well, first of all the Bolivarian Revolution is a Venezuelan concept. Bolivia is not as enamoured of Bolívar, who took a dim view of the country's indigenous majority. The original draft of the legislation would have banned child labour below the age of 16, as I recall. But in Bolivia there are still many young people, male and female, who are forced to work in the informal economy for their survival. Some are well organized; an example is the shoeshine kids (lustrabotas) who even have their own newspaper: http://lustrahormigon.wix.com/hormigon-armado#!__site-copy1. They were among the hundreds of kids who demonstrated at the legislature in December against the age threshold in the legislation. The scandal was not the draft bill but the police repression of their demonstration, which attracted a lot of protest in various social sectors and the media. The bill was then amended, on the recommendation of some of those same social sectors (including peasant families), lowering the age of eligibility for paid labour. Note the qualification: as long as it does not interfere with their education and is done independently to help the child's family make ends meet. This issue also has to be analyzed in the context of many other programs and initiatives tending toward reducing the need for child and adolescent labour and promoting educational opportunities. For example, Bolivia, one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere, provides free education at all levels, including university. == Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == My question is if anyone can confirm the news. Several sources pop up when using different search engines, but I've failed to locate official information on the matter. The latest news from the Bolivian government on this are the president's intent to raise the minimum work age and the meeting with the union of child workers, that rejected that idea. Nonetheless, there's a very serious social problem when the children meet with the president of a state and tell him they need to work to support their families. == Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Criminalization of child labour (especially self-directed child labour) and the abolition of its necessity are completely separate issues. If children have to work to survive, the state should allow them to do so without harassment, allow their unionization as has happened in many places, and so forth. The second correct measure taken was to acknowledge that after the age of 10 to 13, depending on the cultural context and the individual, nobody is a child, but a teenager. Teenagers *want to* slowly grow into their role as full members of society, and that means at least being able to work. Of course it is problematic for a child to have to work more than a given part of the week (say, 15-20 hours). That, however, has very little to do with the law in question. == Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Over the past month I have watched two films for the first time since 1959, when I was 14 years old. Neither one of them will make it on the top hundred films of the 20th century, probably not even one I compiled, but both were my introductions to cinema, as well as having a profound impact on my world outlook and psychological development. The first was “Sailor of the King”, a 1953 British war film about a Canadian sniper concealed in the cliffs of a South Pacific island just west of Argentina holding off Nazi sailors trying to repair a battleship. It didn’t make it to the USA until 1959 apparently. For 54 years that film haunted me. I could never remember the title but just by happenstance a search of the NY Times archives using some combination of words like “Nazi”, “rifle”, “island”, “ship” turned up a 1953 review. Not only did I finally know the name of the film, I was able to track down a DVD from Amazon.com. The film was just as thrilling as when I first saw it even if it was “greatest generation” hooey. The other was “Roots of Heaven”, a 1958 John Huston film based on a Romain Gary novel about a small band of outsiders, as Godard would put it, who conduct nonviolent guerrilla warfare against elephant ivory poachers in French Equatorial Africa. It was the first film I ever saw that gave me a sense of the joy and honor of political resistance. full: http://louisproyect.org/2014/07/07/i-found-it-at-the-movies/ Send list submissions to: Marxism@lists.csbs.utah.edu Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

It always struck me as an example of the way a section of people on the left bandy terms about for effect rather than precision. There is a section of the settler population on the West Bank, and their supporters within the Israeli state, who really are fascists. It's interesting that this murder has led to a wider questioning of the Zionist state itself among Jewish Israelis. [Marxism] [SUSPICIOUS MESSAGE] Fwd: Karen Rothmyer: Citizen Scaife
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == http://secure-web.cisco.com/auth=114BWwtaT34HnUJj-mbgZLacMTzv1Murl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.harvardsquarelibrary.org%2Fspeakout%2Fscaife.html A former Wall Street Journal reporter teaching at the Columbia University School of Journalism, Karen Rothmeyer is the Executive Editor of The Nation. Her research was funded in part by the Center for Investigative Reporting. Here is an updated revelation of “the prime founder of the Media-Savvy New Right.” A large number of organizations owe their existence to the generosity of one of the richest men in America, Richard Mellon Scaife. Scaife, a great-grandson of the founder of the Mellon empire, has made the formation of public opinion both his business and his avocation. Grants from Scaife charities have contributed to conservative, particularly New Right, causes. Officials of The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, acknowledged that Scaife is a far larger contributor than Joseph Coors, whose name has been the only one mentioned in most press reports on the group. Scaife, who joined with Coors to launch Heritage, gave three times Coors's gift to help meet the current $5.3-million Heritage budget. Heritage is probably the most media-oriented of the New Right research and policy study groups, producing a steady stream of reports and publications aimed at both policy-makers and the news media. Scaife himself has never publicly discussed his motivations or goals. Indeed, he has repeatedly declined requests for interviews, as he did in the case of this article. Richard Scaife rarely speaks to the press. After several unsuccessful efforts to obtain an interview, this reporter decided to make one last attempt in Boston, where Scaife was scheduled to attend the annual meeting of the First Boston Corporation. Scaife, a company director, did not show up while the meeting was in progress. Reached eventually by telephone as he dined with the other directors at the exclusive Union Club, he hung up the moment he heard the caller's name. A few minutes later he appeared at the top of the Club steps. At the bottom of the stairs, the following exchange occurred: Mr. Scaife, could you explain why you give so much money to the New Right? You fucking Communist cunt, get out of here. Well. The rest of the five-minute interview was conducted at a rapid trot down Park Street, during which Scaife tried to hail a taxi. Scaife volunteered two statements of opinion regarding his questioner's personal appearance—he said she was ugly and that her teeth were terrible—and also made the comment that she was engaged in hatchet journalism. His questioner thanked Scaife for his time. Don't look behind you, Scaife offered by way of a good-bye. Not quite sure what this remark meant, the reporter suggested that if someone were approaching it was probably her mother, whom she had arranged to meet nearby. She's ugly, too, Scaife said, and strode off. Scaife’s secretiveness is but one aspect of a complicated personality. A handsome man in the blond, beefy style one associates with southwestern ranchers or oil millionaires, Scaife dresses like a Wall Street executive. His astonishingly blue eyes are his most striking feature. A friend from an early age of J. Edgar Hoover, Scaife is said by those who know him to be fascinated by military and intelligence matters. At the same time, he is so shy and so insecure about his intellectual capacities, according to one business acquaintance, that he never speaks business without two, three, four people around him. Certainly money is very much the stuff of which Mellon family history is made. Judge Thomas Mellon, the son of an Irish immigrant farmer who settled in the Pennsylvania countryside, rose to prominence in Pittsburgh during the latter half of the nineteenth century through shrewd real estate investments and a lending business that became the Mellon Bank. In time, the family holdings came to include, in addition to the bank, substantial blocks of stock in Gulf Oil and Alcoa, among other companies. By 1957, when Fortune magazine tried to rank the largest fortunes in America, four Mellons, including Scaife's mother, Sarah Mellon Scaife, were listed among the top eight. In 1965, when his widowed mother died, Richard Scaife—in his early thirties, married, and the father of the first of two children—had no real career. After flunking out of Yale (he later finished at the University of Pittsburgh), Scaife had followed in the footsteps of his father, a retiring man from a local industrial family, and been given a variety of titles but little real power in several Mellon enterprises. Just looking after his personal affairs could have become a full-time job. After his

== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Thanks Gary. It is true my formulation of the Greens as neoliberal is one-sided and doesn't reflect the very real battles going on in within the organisation over policies, for example whether to support the fuel tax increases. It is good they eventually opposed that measure on the grounds it would hit the poor and low paid workers, and all to fund more roads. My description had in mind the Greens' support for a neoliberal carbon tax and neoliberal Emissions Trading Scheme. It was also meant not to label all greens as neoliberal but to point out to some of them the direction the organisation is going and the need to link up with others fighting back on the streets and in their workplaces against the Budget. I doubt this charterisation is an example of my 'Leninism'. My 'Zinovievism' perhaps, but not my 'Leninism'. As always, I am largely in agreement with John's post and blog. However, I do wish to interrogate a little his characterization of the Greens as neo-liberal. I am no groupie type fan of the Greens having spent years attacking them here in Queensland. In fact, I despise their slogan Neither Left nor Right but out in Front, as a cover for a refusal to undertake the politics of social justice and to recognize capitalism for what it is. Nonetheless, if there is to be a broad regroupment of those who oppose some or all aspects of neo-liberalism, then the Greens could have a role to play. Moreover, we cannot aid political mobility and growth on the left by labeling those, who do not agree with us fully, as neo-liberal. We should also recognize that popular opposition to austerity has created tension within the Greens. They may have passed the appropriation bills, but they are committed to oppose aspects of the budget which they formerly were going to endorse. It seems that Greens leader, Christine Milne, was rolled in caucus, and her party will now oppose the rise in petrol prices. I feel the Socialist Alliance strategy of trying to maintain contact with the Greens is much better than the Socialist Alternative method of declaring the Greens anathema. John is no longer a member of the Socialist Alternative, but he has yet to embrace fully this as a rupture with the so-called Leninism of the likes of Mick Armstrong. comradely Gary On Sun, Jul 6, 2014 at 10:29 PM, En Passant with John Passant via Marxism marxism@lists.csbs.utah.edu wrote: == Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Where to now for 'Bust the Budget' in Australia? Such has been the success from the bosses' point of view of the class collaboration of the union leadership and movement over the last 30 years that, by and large, most unionists and concerned community members will not even think about taking control of their unions and the protests to bust the budget with strikes, let alone try to do it. Until such time as we do that we will be in a downward cycle of defeat and despair and the alternating puppet show of neoliberal Labor and the neoliberal Coalition in government, aided by the neoliberal Greens. [Marxism] Founding Congress of Stalin Society of North America Held In the USA
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == http://www.northstarcompass.org/nsc1405/ssna.htm Founding Congress of Stalin Society of North America Held In the USA March 8, the Stalin Society of North America (SSNA) was founded as an educational, political and historical society at a meeting in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. The Founding Congress was attended by about a dozen people, including many young people, from different parts of the United States, from several different ML parties and organizations as well as unaffiliated people The Congress opened with a reading of greetings from the Indian SSNA. After some discussion a mission statement and by-laws were drawn up and unanimously approved. These will be available at the web-site of the Society at www.stalinsociety.org/ and should soon be translated into Spanish and French. An Executive Committee was also established according to the by-laws in order to guide the work of the society. The founders were all in agreement that the Society will not become a political party or organization. However, it is not meant to be an academic institution. The Society hopes to have an influence on the revolutionary movement and left in general in North America, by providing an understanding of the contributions of J.V. Stalin to Marxism-Leninism and to the building of socialism in the USSR. At a separate event in Cambridge on the same evening, Professor Grover Furr of Montclair State University gave an inspiring talk to some 40 people on his two books, Khrushchev Lied and the Murder of Kirov, followed by a lively question and answer session. Professor Furr was presented with a plaque by Alfonso Casal, the chair of the Society. Alfonso Casal stated: The society was specifically created to counter anti-communist history, cold war myths, and specifically to restore the original historical verdict of Joseph Stalin as one of the giants of the 20th centuries and one of the figures in the progression of mankind. Casal then thanked Stalin Societies from England to India to Pakistan for their help. He then continued, From the first, we knew we were going to honor an individual whose numerous articles both in Russian and English, whose two books Khrushchev Died and the Murder of Kirov, have placed him as the leading Marxist writer of Soviet history. [Marxism] It's the St Louis all over again
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == It's the St Louis all over again In 1939 the US turned back the boat the St Louis with 939 Jews on board. It went back to Europe. Estimates are that at least 250 of those Jews died in the Holocaust.
