It used to be the case that eminent economists like Joseph Schumpeter or Lionel Robbins wrote textbooks on the history of economic thought but that sort of thing has become passe. [Marxism] Fwd: The German Greens: Or how they learned to stop worrying and game the ‘poverty migrants’ | LeftEast
POSTING RULES NOTES #1 YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. #2 This mail-list, like most, is publicly permanently archived. #3 Subscribe and post under an alias if #2 is a concern. * How much are our lives worth? €1 billion, according to Germany’s Green Party. So high a pledge is reminiscent of a racket, in which a potentially dangerous situation is artificially created so as the mafioso can pretend that s/he is able to protect the victims under threat. The story that follows is that of a racket. It is a story of how the Greens, through their use of the stereotype of the thieving EU migrant (or ‘social benefit tourist’), have aimed to pacify the emerging radical refugee movement in Germany. In effect, they have played these two social actors (the ‘legitimate’ asylum seeker, and the ‘illegitimate’ EU migrant) against each other. In doing so, the Greens have confirmed what we already knew: they are a bunch of bandits ready to sell out labor for small change. Their actions point to a ruse, one that many of us already suspected, in which the so-called ‘poverty migrants’ of the EU periphery and asylum seekers are played against one another in a zero sum game. In this game, the only winner will be capital. Let me explain why. On Friday, the second chamber of the German parliament passed a deal that would provide the municipalities in the country with an additional €1 billion over the next two years. The move is widely presented as a necessary step to providing municipal governments with much needed financial support in order for them to meet the growing welfare needs of asylum-seekers in the country. But welfare always comes with a hidden condition. The sacrificial offering this time around were the widely-despised economic migrants from within the EU, the so-called ‘social benefit tourists.’ And the one to execute the sacrifice was the Greens. Three things came together on November 28. full: http://www.criticatac.ro/lefteast/the-german-greens-or-how-they-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-game-the-poverty-migrants/ _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

So that’s my bottom line: there is not much hope. I’m thoroughly pessimistic. I’m sorry.’ The average American watches television 5 hours a day. The average hour-long TV show is 36 percent commercials. Each commercial is produced by a creative team made up of graduates from Ivy League schools who are well versed in psychology (just watch Mad Men) and designed to create an unquenchable desire to buy, buy, buy. We are in a Catch-22 situation. The ruling class creates the conditions for commodity fetishism that is undermining capitalism's ability to create commodities in the long run. The Communist Manifesto alluded to such contradictions: The productive forces at the disposal of society no longer tend to further the development of the conditions of bourgeois property; on the contrary, they have become too powerful for these conditions, by which they are fettered, and so soon as they overcome these fetters, they bring disorder into the whole of bourgeois society, endanger the existence of bourgeois property. The conditions of bourgeois society are too narrow to comprise the wealth created by them. And how does the bourgeoisie get over these crises? On the one hand by enforced destruction of a mass of productive forces; on the other, by the conquest of new markets, and by the more thorough exploitation of the old ones. That is to say, by paving the way for more extensive and more destructive crises, and by diminishing the means whereby crises are prevented. The weapons with which the bourgeoisie felled feudalism to the ground are now turned against the bourgeoisie itself. _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

The findings underscore the lack of rules designed to steer the United Nations' 'climate finance' initiative, through which rich countries funnel money to poor countries to help tackle global warming, Karl Ritter and Margie Mason wrote for the AP. The money for coal highlights one of the biggest problems in the UN-led effort to fight climate change: A lack of accountability, they pointed out. Climate finance is critical to any global climate deal, and rich countries have pledged billions of dollars toward it in UN climate talks, which resume Monday in Lima, Peru. Yet there is no watchdog agency that ensures the money is spent in the most effective way. There's not even a common definition on what climate finance is. full: http://www.commondreams.org/news/2014/12/01/investigation-finds-dirty-coal-projects-being-financed-climate-funds _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

In those fallow years, I was a developing idealist who did not know that the CIA had begun recruiting students for its secret war against the Soviet Union. In 1960, I hitchhiked to the University of California, Berkeley, to write about the new student movement there. In the Bay Area, students protesting the House Un-American Activities Committee were beaten, hosed and washed down the steps of City Hall. They were developing the first campus political party at Berkeley, known as SLATE. They were fighting for the right of student governments to take stands on “off-campus” issues like racial segregation everywhere from San Francisco’s downtown hotels to Mississippi. They were in the process of becoming the Free Speech Movement and the Vietnam Day Committee of 1964 and 1965. I spent an exhilarating summer staying in an apartment full of Berkeley radicals. One of the many visitors I met was Donald Hoffman, who represented the National Student Association, which included members of student government and Daily editors that met every summer. He was a bit older than me, a friendly liberal fellow who wanted to make sure that Berkeley students came to that summer’s national convention. He also was a CIA agent, and remained so for many decades. The editor of the Daily before me, Peter Eckstein, was enlisted by the CIA to direct its recruiting operations, which targeted student activists in Europe who had been attracted to Soviet-sponsored youth festivals. Peter was preceded by another Daily editor, Harry Lunn, who became a lifetime CIA operative in many postings around the world. full: http://www.thenation.com/article/191569/cias-student-activism-phase# _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

We have grown obsessed with subtext. In other words, we live in very discursive times, when language seems to matter more than ever. Perhaps the return of civility, as those on the right and left have both argued, constitutes a renewal of the culture wars, where taste became an object of national debate. But it also seems like a natural result of the sheer amount of time we spend engaged in the textual worlds of the Internet. There is more to say and share than ever before. As we dive headlong into this world made of words, the temptation will always be to shout above the din. This is why the University of Illinois’s treatment of Salaita has gained so much attention with the academic world. Despite the careful deliberation that went into his hiring, the school rescinded his job offer once a series of inflammatory tweets about Israel began circulating among powerful donors and trustees. He was charged with incivility. Should the informal channels of Twitter be admissible evidence of a scholar’s record? Was it the words that were uncivil or the ideas they described? Even those who found his tweets vulgar believed that he was being held to a disturbingly vague and arbitrary standard. The school claimed that its case was self-consciously not an abridgement of free speech. In practice, though, it had essentially set out a series of cynical guidelines for how to exercise that right. Two weeks ago, Salaita filed a lawsuit against the university. Among the various charges, many of which involve procedure, Salaita and his attorneys allege that the university denied their request to view administration e-mails detailing their deliberations—specifically, those containing keywords such as “Palestine,” “Jewish,” and “uncivil.” full: http://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/civility-wars _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

I found much of personal interest in Vol. 1 but I recognize that readers who don't share Ernest Tate's political-activist background might not value it as highly. Vol. 2, however, should be of great interest to a much broader readership because it provides an insider's view of an extremely important historical event—namely, the creation of the powerful anti-Vietnam-War movement in Great Britain during the 1960's and early 70's. An essential contribution to that movement was made by the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation and the International War Crimes Tribunal that it gave birth to. Tate and his comrade-in-arms Jess MacKenzie were closely involved with all of these developments, and his narrative account of their battles and eventual triumphs is fascinating. And underlying all of his mass work was Tate's central role in bringing a British section of the Fourth International into being. What he has to say about his dealings with key figures in the antiwar, labor, and socialist movements such as Bertrand Russell, Ralph Shoenman, David Horowitz, Isaac and Tamara Deutscher, Ernest Mandel, Vladimir Dedijer, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Laurent Schwartz, Tariq Ali, Ken Coates, Pat Jordan, Tony Cliff, Gerry Healy and many more will be of immense value to historians trying to understand the great youth radicalization as it played out in Britain during those turbulent years.
