I woke up this morning to a warning in the Guardian from the Bank of
Scotland's (RBS) economists. We are all to eliminate our share portfolios
except for Government bonds.

I did not feel the need to call my broker as I am too broke to have a share
portfolio.

Still I think it is very interesting to pair The RBS's warnings with the
alarums and excursions coming out of Michael Roberts. I am particularly
interested in the impact of the collapse of crude oil prices. Maturo in
Venezuela may have been the first victim, but it might be worth keeping
one's eye on Saudi Arabia. the Royal Family is already muttering about the
need for Thatcherism. The recent mass executions might also signify a
nervous ruling elite.

If they apply Thatcherism inside the Kingdom, then I think all bets are
off. The Royal Family survives because of its capacity to bribe. If that
capacity is diminished by the fall in the price of crude, then it is just
possible we could be in for a Second Wave of the Arab Spring. And it might
be one that takes out the most corrupt leadership in the world - the Saudi
royal family.

comradely

I wasn't going to get into a flame war with Luko on the list as that is not
what this list is for. Louis puts a great deal of work into the list and
in finding interesting material and posting it here, and deserves better.

However I received a number of offensive emails from him off-list, the
worst of which suggested that the reason we reblog stuff on Redline could
be for financial gain - he began quizzing me about ads on Redline and I
explained to him that we do not put up the ads, they are done by
wordpress. We gain no money form the ads, we don't solicit donations
either and we don't even have a bank account.

I was especially insulted because I have been unemployed for 18 months,
living off my redundancy pay.

When I told him I found his email stuff to me offensive, he denied he had
said any such thing - although there is t was right in front of me (and
him) and demanded I apologise or he'd 'expose' me on marxmail.

He then began stalking me on the internet.

The guy is nasty, vindictive and a nutter.

Good riddance.

I watch Al-Jazeera (English) quite a lot; it's so much better than NZ
television news and a lot of what passes for current affairs here.

However, Al-Jazeera is also closely tied to the Qatari ruling elite, not
only in terms of funding and editorial management, but in reflecting the
standpoint of the Qatari elite on various things.

This is especially true of Al-Jazeera Arabic, which pretty closely reflects
the foreign policy interests and imperatives of the Qatari elite.

My friend Karim Pourhamzavi and I have just had an article published
in the *Journal
of Media Critiques* on this subject which folks might be interested in.
You can read it here:
http://mediacritiques.net/index.php/jmc/article/view/57/39

For anyone who missed an earlier post of mine, Karim also wrote an opinion
piece re the heightening of Iran-Saudi tensions; it first appeared late
last week in the *Otago Daily Times*, but has been getting republished in
various other places, which is excellent.

Bernie Sanders’ popularity does not alter in any way the negative
connotations of the words “communism” and “Communist Party.” As a matter
of fact, his popularity is an argument in favor of changing our name; in
favor of trying to create an organization that reflects and represents
the values he talks about and to which people are attracted.

I have been pushing for such big changes, first and foremost, in our
name, but more than that. I’m for an entirely new formation with
radical, democratic, egalitarian, humanistic, ecological, socialist
politics; with an organizational culture that encourages innovation and
experimentation, requires critical discussion and scrupulous realism,
and prizes collectivity and transparency.

I think we need an organization that fits how people live, work, think
and feel today, which is so profoundly different from even a decade, let
alone a century, ago.

The same as I say here all these days.

The difference is that people in Germany KNOW the racist campaign, which is not
new and which started not on the first day of this year, but is going on for
longer time, with a fascist scum setting fire to peoples houses, murdering
refugees and immigrants, and a bourgeois class and her parties and politicians
setting the tone that foreigners and refugees are a PITA, and that refugees
should be limited and best sent back "home" into the war zones of the
imperialist "war on terror" and for regime changes. The large coalition is
voting every three months a new law further restricting democratic rights. More
than a million refugees came to Germany in the past year 2015. For the right
wing, this is one million too much. They look for each and every means to kick
these human beings back to Africa and Asia, best to be drowned in the
Mediterranean Sea. The racist fake feminist Alice Schwarzer agitates
continuously against those Arabs as born rapists.

The right wing of the governing party CDU/CSU even wants to overthrow their
prime minister Ms. Angela Merkel for being too lenient towards that huge human
mass of refugees coming by the millions over the Meditreanean Sea and
overcoming every obstacle, or finding a way around it. The don't understand
that Merkel has experienced herself the mass mobilisation which overthrew the
GDR government. Merkel does not want to give in to the CSU's demands for a
fixed upper limit for refugees, which would turn out to be self-defeating for
the bourgeoisie, since they would have to declare their failure with the first
refugee finding a way over the border.

And now they found new fodder for their anti-human campaings, the arson
attacks, the murders, the humiliations, the prohibition to leave the city the
refugee is assigend to stay. more repression, more attacks on working people's
rights, more war against the Third World.

Ohhh! A woman has been touched on her buttock! We always told you that those
dirty Arabs are born rapists! Look more of the racist scorn up in the Ku Kux
Klan's or Mr. Trump's word books. Lots of things are being invented. Mr. Amith
Gupta invents gang rapes. TV5MONDE invents that 100 women had been raped by
1000 Arabs.

The helpless indignated mayer of Cologne called on women to stay aloof of men,
staying at least one armlength away from men (she obviously has never moved in
public transit during rush hours), i.e. women should leave it to men to
determain where a women may stand or sit or move. The Cologne police chief was
deposed for the lack of racial profiling, for not having emphasized the "North
African or Arab" origin of the alleged criminals. The gutter press is running
amok. BILD title page hurls on January 8: "DEPORTATION FRUST! [in 2 inch high
letters] Why it is so difficult to deport criminals. After the sexual
trespassing on New Years Eve an increasing number of polititians call for
faster deportations".

From the other side of the pond, Donald Trump joined in: "Germany is going
through massive attacks to its people by the migrants allowed to enter the
country. New Years Eve was a disaster. THINK!" he twittered on Jan. 6. Is that
the company you are looking for? "Over the weekend, Mr. Trump added the sexual
violence by immigrants in Cologne in Germany on the New Year eve to the list of
reasons why Muslims should be barred. “What is happening in Germany is
unbelievable….radical Islamic terrorism is a huge problem. And I took a lot of
heat, all over the world. Now they are saying, what you have said is amazing.
Now the whole world is talking about this,” Mr. Trump told a rally." reports
'The Hindu' on January 10, 2016

And you want now to tell the Arabs that the Ku Kux Klan, or its German
counterpart, is there to beat them up in order to "protect women"?

Have you lost your mind? Sorry Ken, I do not address you personally, but the
public at large on this list.

You want to tell us, that we should all join the fascist scum and attack those
refugees from Arabia, Africa and other Asia, since they "rape our (white)
women"?!?!

It is incredible. Outrageous.

But maybe understandable considering that "humanitarian wars" by the US Empire
find lots of support in the USA, even calling for US bombers to obliterate
Syria for "regime c

Each morning I give Greenleft mailing list a brief scan, mostly to see
how Michael Karadjis dices and slices the amen corner there,
particularly Stansfield Smith--one of the more extreme cases.

This morning Smith referred Greenleft readers to an article on
Information Clearing House (you were expecting a legitimate media
outlet, you silly goose?) that claimed the NY Times had reported that
rebels in Madaya were shooting residents trying to escape. My eyebrows
raised when I saw that. It sounded like ISIS was in control, something
that had not been reported before. So I checked the NYT article and
discovered this:

Wounded fighters and their families were evacuated simultaneously on
both sides, and plans were made for more aid and evacuations. But those
plans have stalled as people continue to become sick and die in Madaya —
subject to one of the tightest sieges of the war, including what the
United Nations calls “credible reports” of people being shot as they try
to escape.

Now this shithead who wrote the article made sure it was studded with
links to bolster his case but there none for the United Nations supposed
claim. Furthermore, he adds "The people are being shot — by the
so-called rebels holding the residents as hostages, but the NY Times
omitted that fact."

So if the NYT was "omitting" that fact, what is an alternative report
that would bear out his claim? Don't hold your breath waiting for that.
I just googled "rebels shooting hostages Madaya" and nothing came up.

If you would have told me 10 years ago when I would occasionally look at
Information Clearing House for some useful reports on Iraq that it would
now be printing such baldfaced propaganda now, I wouldn't have believed
it. I used to agree strongly with Peter Camejo in the early 80s that
"international" questions should not divide the left. Now I am not so sure.

(Some jihadist must have not been reading his Seymour Hersh or Patrick
Cockburn to commit such a heinous act against a state that was funding him.)

The suicide bomber who killed at least 10 people in Istanbul was a
Syrian man born in 1988, Turkish authorities have said. Numan Kurtulmuş,
the Deputy Prime Minister, said most of the victims are foreigners and
that the perpetrator had been identified using his body parts. The
explosion struck Sultanahmet Square, metres from the famous Blue Mosque,
at around 10.20am local time on Tuesday.

Hello,

Apart from the sick cartoon that MRzine retweeted after the sick
picture, another tweet attracted my attention.

A tweet from the YPG about "terrorist" attacks by Daesh (Kobane) and
Nusra, Arhrar-al-sham (Aleppo). What is the role of YPG in Aleppo? Are
they talking about the city or the province?

For instance:
http://ypgrojava.com/en/2016/01/08/jan-7-isis-al-nusra-and-ahrar-al-sham-continually-attacking-kobane-aleppo/

Looking at the site I found another:
http://ypgrojava.com/en/2015/12/07/dec-5-civilians-killed-in-daesh-al-nusra-terrorist-unceasing-attacks-on-kobani-aleppo/

What sources can I read about the role of the YPG in the last 4 years.
What I know is sketchy.

Greetings

Most of the CP people that I know in the Greater Boston area seem to be
supporting Sanders. But I think they are outliers in relation to the national
Party. I suspect that Charles Brown's support for HRC may be more typical of
the leanings of the Party nationally.

Apparently, Political Affairs stopped publishing. It was the theoretical
journal of the CPUSA was usually more useful than the Daily Worker or any
of their newspapers with articles by Gerald Horne and Victor Perlo over the
years. This seems to be part of the malaise addressed by Jarvis Tyner in a
speech I posted here a few days ago.

http://www.peoplesworld.org/thanks-for-being-a-reader-of-political-affairs

It stopped publishing as an actual journal over a decade ago. what is being
suspended is it's web site. Kaput. I think this has to do with the problems
the CPUSA is experiencing with regards to what Democrat to support: Sanders
or Clinton. They are having some major dissent going on, especially within
their NY District.

Can Australian unions smash the straitjacket on strikes?
If left union leaders are serious about defending their members,
themselves, and their position then the general strike in 1969 to free
Clarrie O'Shea and smash the penal powers shows a real way to win the
right to strike. Union members could begin to organise in their unions
now to run any campaign to smash the modern day equivalent of the penal
powers.
