Sanders has betrayed the hopes of the Bernie Army. But he is only a symbol

they will have learned not to put their trust in princes!

Adolph Reed is an African-American political science professor at the
University of Pennsylvania, a prestigious Ivy League school, and a
ubiquitous presence on the Internet left as a public intellectual. Along
with Cornel West and Michelle Alexander, he has figured as a prominent
Black intellectual supporter of the Bernie Sanders campaign.

Reed’s ideological profile is very much based on class orthodoxy
bordering on workerism. To what extent his Marxism retains some of his
early Trotskyist training is open to question. Reed was a member of the
Atlanta Young Socialist Alliance in the late 60s and smart enough to
drop out long before he was transformed into a loyal cult member like me.

That class orthodoxy leads him to embrace positions that echo Walter
Benn Michaels, a Marxist academic who argues that race-based political
demands divide the working class. For Reed, reparations for slavery fall
into this category as he maintained in a Progressive article:
“reparations talk is rooted in a different kind of politics, a politics
of elite-brokerage and entreaty to the ruling class and its official
conscience, the philanthropic foundations, for racial side-payments.”
Like Michaels, Reed has a bit of a conspiracy-minded approach to such
matters as if officers at the Ford Foundation were burning the midnight
oil trying to figure out how to prevent Black people from reading “The
18th Brumaire” and building workers councils.

Looks like Jeff forwarded some of these e-mails but not the longer response
I wrote. If Louis does not want Tony on the list, Tony is always welcome to
e-mail me in private to have a longer discussion. Jeff is not.

I'm not sure why he spent space explaining his feelings about Atzmon given
that I did not take issue with that. He appears to believe that the gist of
my comments are for his writings about Atzmon, but I could be wrong.

Saying that the portrayal of Palestine activism as an internal Jewish
community issue is most certainly NOT an Atzmon trope (or if it is, it is
not what makes Atzmon problematic). It is a simple matter of rejecting
racism, just as we should not see black rights as an internal matter for
white people to discuss. For TG to suggest this is an anti-Jewish trope
validates my concerns about ethnocentrism.

His comments suggesting I agree with anti-Ziganism are false and
slanderous, given the time I have spent in Hungary working on behalf of the
Roma community. I was very clear that I think the NK made a lapse in
judgment about lending any sympathy to Jobbik -- so why is TG suggesting
otherwise?

The last few paragraphs about "privilege" are contradictory indicate that
he does not have any meaningful conception of what privileging a
community's voice means. Indeed he seems to have trouble understanding the
concern in the first paragraph as well. This kind of politics is highly
problematic.

It's also quite scandalous that he is saying he doesn't know what happened
at Stanford given that I saw him appear on the page along with a bunch of
liberal Zionists justifying what happened.

David Walsh: First, can you tell us something about your background and
how you made your way to the study in particular of Southern Unionism
and opposition to the Confederacy?

Victoria Bynum: I don’t come from an academic background. Neither of my
parents had a high school education. My dad was born in Jones County,
Mississippi, but he left the state at age 17 to join the military.
That’s how he made his living; he was a master sergeant by the time he
retired. In my family, work was valued over education.
I grew up in the fifties and sixties, during the era of the Civil Rights
movement. Influenced by my mother, who supported racial equality, I was
very affected by this period. Over time, I developed a strong desire to
go to college, and at age 26 began taking classes at a community
college. To cut to the chase, my early interest in the history of race
and social class emerged from my own experiences. When I began college I
was a divorced mother on welfare. Pursuing a doctorate in history
required a long economic struggle, one that ended after I finally
obtained my degree and began teaching at Texas State University.

I began my college research with an interest in “free people of color,”
the designation applied to free people before the Civil War. I was
initially intrigued by a black friend’s insistence that his Virginia
ancestors had never been slaves. That seemed to me unusual, and it
piqued my interest in Old South history. Along the way, I became
interested in both free black women and white women who lived outside
the planter class. Those interests resulted in my dissertation (and
first book), Unruly Women: The Politics of Social and Sexual Control in
the Old South.

While working on my dissertation, “Unruly Women,” I expanded my research
into the Civil War, and that’s where I discovered Southern Unionism. The
records were full of evidence of dissent and insurrections by common
people, and it fascinated me. Here were white non-slaveholding men,
women who allied with them, free people of color and slaves—all engaged
in acts of subversion against the Confederacy. I had never known that
actions like these occurred on the Civil War home front.

I was only studying North Carolina at the time. But, in the back of my
mind, I remembered the story of Jones County, Mississippi, because my
father was from there. I remembered reading years earlier in a footnote
the legend of how the county supposedly seceded from the Confederacy. I
didn’t really know what it meant for a county to “secede” from the
Confederacy, but it got my attention. So after I completed Unruly Women,
which included two chapters on Southern Unionism, I decided to make my
second book about the county in which my father was born.
It was a hard history to write because there were not nearly the court
records documenting the Jones County insurrection as I’d found for Civil
War North Carolina. The North Carolina governors’ papers, court and
legislative papers, are filled with information on insurrections and
inner civil wars for several parts of the state, not just one. The
Mississippi archives offered less evidence, but, in many ways, offered
the most interesting guerrilla leader of all, Newton Knight.

In writing The Free State of Jones, I decided to draw a broader picture
of the region’s insurrection by tracing the historical roots of its
peoples’ ideas about authority, power and legitimate government. That’s
why the book begins with the American Revolution––and even before. After
finishing that book, I expanded my research on Southern Unionism into Texas.

So I’ve now published works that trace both the roots of Southern
Unionism and the eruption of Civil War guerrilla warfare in three
different states. As the stories of Unionism became ever more
interesting, it also became evident to me that they are an important and
largely unknown part of American history. Even though there have been
numerous studies by various historians—I’m not the only one by any
stretch—the stories never seem to move far beyond academia and into the
popular mainstream and consciousness. That’s what I find so exciting
about Free State of Jones, the movie.

Subject: [Marxism] Israel - world's most racist state?

I find this kind of discussion list antiquated since it is difficult to
reply or respond. I also have little time since organising against the
real witch hunters in the British labour party, from which I am suspended
for 'anti-Semitism' is taking most of my time.
Amith accuses me of 'racist privileging of Jewish voices like his own.'
whatever that means.

Amith's accusations are absurd. I did indeed wage a campaign against
Atzmon, who is a virulent anti-Semite (no not a nut job, a typically
chauvinist way of writing someone off). It was at a time when the SWP was
supporting him. contrary to Amith's lies I didn't do so from a Jewish
perspective but from a Palestinian one viz that Atzmon was endangering the
Palestine solidarity movement and making it easier for the Zionists to
attack it. After some time, various Palestinian figures of note, like Ali
Abunimah and Omar Barghouti issued a statement denouncing Atzmon's
anti-Semitism, which was also Zionist in its political stance e.g.
criticising BDS. It's no accident that Atzmon has been gleeful at the
Israeli attacks on Omar Barghouti. If Amith hasn't read what he says then
maybe he should before commenting on things he knows nothing about. The
fact is that there was a time when Atzmon had considerable support.

It is a lie to say that I have said or suggested that I have 'used
ethnocentric rhetoric in other writings portraying the Palestinian struggle
as an internal Jewish community issue'. This is an Atzmon trope. There is
no truth in it and it would suggest that Amith is accepting part of
Atzmon's anti-Semitic rhetoric whilst distancing himself from the man himself.

I criticised those who lent Atzmon support in e.g. the blurb of his book
'Wandering Who' such as Richard Falk. I didn't accuse him of anti-Semitism
but naivety. Counterpunch is a different matter. It has given
considerable space to anti-Semites and indeed fascists like israel Shamir.

I know little of the Stanford incident but I do know that Alison Weir has
appeared on platforms with white supremacists and believe that the latter
have something to offer the Palestine solidarity movement. In this I
wholeheartedly support JVP in their opposition to her and her ilk because
they know that genuine anti-Semitism is something that the Zionists welcome
and that it is destructive of the PS movement.

Yes I criticised Neturei Karta for demonstration in support of the
Hungarian Jobbik party, which is a fascist party as well as being
anti-Semitic and of course anti-Gypsy. Perhaps Amith has problems with that?

Far from me 'privileging' Jews I do the opposite. I say that Jewish people
have a duty to speak out against Zionism since the latter claims to speak
on their behalf.

The fight against Zionism is an anti-racist one. Alliances with racists,
white supremacists, fascists or those who employ racist tropes or arguments
does a disservice to the Palestinians. if you don't understand that then
keep away from the Palestine solidarity movement as you can only do us
damage. At a time when increasing numbers of young Jews are coming out
against Israel and Zionism we don't want sympathisers with the Alison Weirs
and other reactionary supporters of US imperialism to put them off.

My column today in Alternet is on the events in Kashmir. The last paragraph
points the finger:

Kashmiris need to be able to see a future where their own ambitions can govern
their present and future. That imagination cannot be build through the scope of
a rifle. It has to be built with historical generosity and an adherence to the
basic norms of the UN Charter. Who among us is willing to face up to that
challenge - to stop having the same old tired conversations and start our
discussion with the Kashmiris front and center?

NY Times, July 13 2016
Yale Drops Case Against Worker Who Smashed Window Depicting Slaves
By ZOE GREENBERG

As Yale continues to debate the legacy of John C. Calhoun, an alumnus
and leading 19th-century politician and slaveholder for whom one of its
residential colleges is named, the university said on Tuesday that it
would not press charges in the case of a black dining hall worker who
smashed a stained-glass panel depicting slaves carrying cotton.

The Yale police initially arrested the worker, Corey Menafee, 38, after
he climbed on top of a table in the Calhoun College dining hall and
smashed the window, one of several related to Calhoun and to slavery,
with a broom handle.

The episode, which took place in mid-June but only recently garnered
widespread attention, was first reported by The New Haven Independent.

“No employee should be subject to coming to work and seeing slave
portraits on a daily basis,” Mr. Menafee told a police officer,
according to the Yale Police Department’s incident report.

Mr. Menafee had worked at the university for about eight years and began
working in Calhoun last December. Both of his managers told officers
that he was a “very good employee.” He was charged with a misdemeanor
for reckless endangerment in the second degree and a felony for criminal
mischief in the first degree.

Thomas Conroy, a spokesman for Yale, said Mr. Menafee apologized and
resigned after the episode.

On Tuesday morning, Mr. Menafee appeared in court with Patricia Kane, a
lawyer working pro bono on his behalf. Ms. Kane said he did not have a
computer or a phone and could not be reached for comment.

Approximately 40 supporters, including Yale students and faculty members
and community leaders, filed into the courtroom behind Mr. Menafee.

“Yale has to decide which is more valuable: a stained-glass window, or
the dignity and humanity of the black people who live and work at Yale,”
said Megan Fountain, an alumna and volunteer with the activist group
Unidad Latina en Accion, which helped organize the rally.

Yale said in a statement on Tuesday that it had requested that the
state’s attorney not press charges, and that the university would not be
seeking restitution for the broken window. That request was not
communicated to the prosecutor until after the court hearing, so another
one was scheduled for July 26, when all charges will probably be
dismissed, according to David Strollo, a supervisory assistant state’s
attorney.

Yale also noted that after Mr. Menafee broke the window, a committee
recommended that several windows related to slavery be removed and
“conserved for future study and a possible contextual exhibition.”

The name of Calhoun College has long been the target of student
activists, who say it celebrates a slave owner and makes minority
students feel unwelcome. Yale’s president, Peter Salovey, announced in
April that the university would keep the college’s name, “to confront,
teach and learn from the history of slavery in the United States.”

The Independent quoted Mr. Menafee as regretful. “It could be termed as
civil disobedience,” he said. “But there’s always better ways of doing
things like that than just destroying things. It wasn’t my property, and
I had no right to do it.”

Still, Mr. Menafee’s actions seem to resonate. A GoFundMe page and a
Change.org petition were circulating widely as the story spread on
social media; Yale Law students wrote an open letter to Mr. Salovey.
Even Mr. Menafee’s lawyer seems stirred.

“Yes, there may be other ways to express protest, but something just got
to him,” Ms. Kane said. “Sometimes you just have to stand up and take
action.”

British Labour Jeremy Corbyn's name should automatically be on the ballot
paper in the Labour Party's leadership contest, the party's national
executive committee ruled on July 12.
The socialist leader is facing a challenge from Blairite MP Angela Eagle.
Recently, 172 Labour MPs passed a motion of no confidence in the veteran
leftist, sparking large rallies and mass meetings across the country in his
support.
