"But despite the shift of the Democratic Party toward the left.."

What shift? Are they serious?

Don't bother answering. I know the answer (sadly) is that they are and
have been for 80 years or more.

But despite the shift of the Democratic Party toward the left, far too
many left-wingers vigorously, vocally, and with both action and
inaction, opposed the idea of supporting that party’s candidate for
president. They did so as a matter of principle, and it seems that
opposition to coalition politics as a matter of principle is emerging as
a major, and apparently growing, trend among left-wing thinkers,
commentators, and activists.

Some of this is true, but the blame here goes to the idiot/creep/lowlife
like Derek Ion who "managed" the space. Not having access to affordable
housing doesn't excuse negligence and dicks like Derek try to line their
pockets, however small the sums they skim. I've been in the bay area for 28
years and travel in the same circles as many of these folks and there are
always scumballs looking to take advantage of others in the name of "art."
The worst part is that other artists and collectives who do try to make
their spaces safe and don't act like fucked up new age gurus are going to
be the ones taking the brunt of this as it is characterized as a "rave" or
some other such nonsense. Many of these art collectives are part of the
gentrification process as early adopters and pave the way for others by
"transforming" so-called "bad" neighborhoods into "safe" ones, which of
course means white.

[Marxism] Fidel Castro, 1926-2016 - An assessment by Claudio Katz

Of all the tributes to Fidel Castro and assessments of the
Cuban leader’s contribution to the world socialist movement,
this one by Argentine political economist Claudio Katz seems
to me particularly outstanding. It was published first on
his web site. My translation and notes.
– Richard Fidler http://tinyurl.com/ze8rmfv

Our Fidel
by Claudio Katz

With Fidel’s death Latin America’s principal revolutionary
figure of the last century has left us. Amidst our great
sorrow at his passing it is difficult to assess his stature.
But while emotion clouds any evaluation, the Comandante’s
influence[1] can be appreciated with greater clarity now
that he has left.

The media simply emphasize that importance in a descriptive
sense. They describe how he was present in the major events
of the last 50 years. And his worst enemies in the empire
confirm that overwhelming historical influence. They
celebrate his death in order to forget that he lasted in
office throughout the mandates of ten U.S. presidents and
survived countless assassination attempts by the CIA.

Cuba is the obsession of the Pentagon and the frustration of
the State Department. No other country of that size has
inflicted so many defeats on the empire. After 53 years
David forced Goliath to re-establish diplomatic
relations.[2]

Fidel arouses admiration that borders on devotion. The
praises stem from his capacity to make possible what was
highly improbable. But this fascination is frequently
divorced from the content of his achievement.

Many idolize Fidel but from the standpoint of capitalism.
They extol the Caribbean leader while promoting variants of
the system of exploitation that the Comandante fought
throughout his life. In reality, they praise the creator of
alien universes while rejecting any such journey by
themselves.

For the Left, Fidel always had another meaning. He was the
principal designer of a revolutionary socialist project of
Latin American emancipation. He put into practice the
objective inaugurated by Lenin in 1917 and therefore
occupied in Latin America a place equivalent to that of the
promotor of the soviets.

But unlike his precursor, Fidel led for decades the process
he initiated in 1960. He can be assessed as much for his
triumph as for his management.

>From a longer-lasting perspective, Castro’s achievement is
comparable with the campaigns undertaken by Bolívar and San
Martín. He led regional actions attempting to link a second
independence for Latin America with the international
advance of socialism.

Fidel tackled these tasks of Cyclopean proportions while
maintaining a very close relationship with his followers. He
addressed his messages to millions of sympathizers who
cheered him on various continents. He achieved a rational
and passionate connection with the multitudes who heard him
speak in countless meetings.

I thought it funny also. Seems the authors were using more Fascist tactics
to project to the "communists" than actual Stalinist tactics. Funny and sad.

I never saw this comic before, so for me it was a first. But I always
"enjoyed" the 1950s/1960s communist take over films like "Red Nightmare"
(1957, starting Jack Webb), a kind of "docudrama" film ("But father, I'm
going to join the Commune and raise beets..." says the daughter in the
film).Or the 1952 flick "Invasions, U.S.A." where an unnamed "Enemy"
invades the West coast. Lots of fun...

Hahahaha, this was absolutely hilarious! I haven't seen one in many
years, but I always got a kick watching such cold war propaganda films,
usually black and white shorts on 16mm from the 50's. But I remember
there was even such a Hollywood drama made well into the 80's, by which
time they were a little more sophisticated but still quite laughable.

Of course these have to be viewed strictly as comedy, so for humorless
types (or if you're just in a bad mood) it will appear as one after
another outrageous depictions of communists. You just have to remember
that authors of such material can only project their own inclinations on
the scary communists they're portraying. So when this comic shows
"communists" using ethnic intolerance, control of the press and
education, and arresting dissidents, these are just the means that they
could imagine using themselves. Or that they have used, come to think of
it.
