"Some comrades in East Bay DSA (EBDSA) have formed the Eugene Debs Caucus.
What is happening in EBDSA can best be understood by understanding the
strategy of the Democratic Party. That strategy is to ride the health care
issue, including “single payer”, to a congressional majority (they hope) in
2018 and then back into the White House in 2020, after which they will drop
“single payer” like a hot potato if they regain power.

How seriously they can be taken on the “single payer” issue is seen by the
fact that when they actually had control – right after Obama was elected in
2008 – they refused to even discuss not only single payer but even having a
public insurance *option *for their health care reform! The Democrats’
strategy revealed itself in all its glory recently here in California where
the Democrats raised the issue and then made sure to kill it. (See this
article

for
the gory details, as well as for a critique of single payer itself.)

There is now an ongoing debate around internal democracy within EBDSA. The
lack of democracy that many feel is directly related to the issue of the
direction of EBDSA and of DSA in general. Attached are two documents of the
Eugene Debs Caucus."

Included in the article are two statements:

   - A "Statement of Purpose" which discusses why it's impossible to
support any Democrats and actually work to build a working class party. It
also discusses a strategy for how we can start now.
   - A statement "Social Democracy or Revolutionary Socialism?"

When Karl Marlantes takes the screen during the new PBS film series The
Vietnam War, he says coming home was nearly as traumatic as the war
itself. Later, he describes being assaulted by protesters at the
airport, invoking the image of spat-on Vietnam veterans, an image that
Los Angeles Times editorial writer Michael McGough said in 2012 was
based on a myth. An edifying myth, McGough called it, but still a myth.
With The Vietnam War, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick have created a film that
rehashes some old, tired tropes. In doing so, they distort what
soldiers, veterans, and antiwar activists alike know about the war and
its aftermath, especially inside the United States.

NY Times Op-Ed, Sept. 15 2017
Chelsea Manning Has a Lot to Teach. Harvard Doesn’t Agree.
By TREVOR TIMM

On Wednesday, Harvard’s Kennedy School announced that Chelsea Manning,
the former Army intelligence analyst and whistle-blower, would be a
visiting fellow this fall. The reaction was swift: A day later, Michael
Morell, a former acting director of the C.I.A. and also a visiting
fellow at the school, resigned from his own fellowship in protest. His
resignation was quickly followed by the current director of the C.I.A.,
Mike Pompeo, canceling a speech scheduled at the school. In a statement,
Mr. Pompeo unilaterally declared Ms. Manning a “traitor.”

On Friday morning, the school folded, disinviting Ms. Manning in a
cowardly act that does immense disservice to its students and the public
debate around government secrecy.

It’s remarkable that one of the country’s premier educational
institutions would bow to C.I.A. pressure and reject a person who has
arguably done more to contribute to the public’s understanding of world
diplomacy than anyone else in modern times. In early 2010, Ms. Manning
leaked a trove of hundreds of thousands of State Department and Defense
Department documents, an archive that opened an unparalleled window into
American foreign policy. Its documents have been referenced by major
news organizations so many times that it’s impossible to count them.

The important revelations in the Manning documents — originally leaked
to WikiLeaks and published in conjunction with The New York Times and
other newspapers — are also too numerous to name, but they include the
fact that the United States had killed far more people in Iraq than the
government had admitted publicly, that United States soldiers turned a
blind eye to torture by Iraqi soldiers and that the United States
covered up the killing of civilians by American soldiers.

Ms. Manning was convicted of violating the Espionage Act and other
offenses in 2013, and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. (My
organization helped raise money for her legal defense.) In January,
President Barack Obama, in one of his last acts in office, commuted her
sentence. Altogether, she spent seven years in prison — more time behind
bars than any other leaker in American history. She was also subject to
deplorable treatment while in custody that the United Nations special
rapporteur on torture said at the time constituted cruel, inhuman and
degrading treatment and that more than 250 law professors said amounted
to unconstitutional torture. Whatever your opinion on the value of her
disclosures, it should be clear to everyone that Ms. Manning was unduly
punished for her supposed crime, and she deserves the opportunity to
re-enter the public debate without worrying about the C.I.A. bullying
private institutions to disavow her at every turn.

Mr. Morrell, in his resignation letter, quoted unnamed officials
claiming Ms. Manning “put the lives of U.S. soldiers at risk,” without
citing any specific examples. This is a common charge against her, and
an unfounded one: The evidence of “damage” from Ms. Manning’s leaks has
been grossly exaggerated from the start. During her trial, the
government could not point to anyone, soldier or otherwise, who was
physically harmed by WikiLeaks’ publications. Even at the time of the
leaks, State Department officials were privately admitting that
administration officials were exaggerating the harm the leaks caused to
bolster their case.

Harvard’s decision to rescind Ms. Manning’s invitation is about more
than academic spinelessness. In his statement defending the decision,
Douglas W. Elmendorf, the dean of the Kennedy School, said, “I think we
should weigh, for each potential visitor, what members of the Kennedy
School community could learn from that person’s visit against the extent
to which that person’s conduct fulfills the values of public service to
which we aspire.”

If that’s the Kennedy School’s new policy, let’s take a look. Mr.
Morell, for example, has steadfastly refused to admit that the C.I.A.
engaged in torture, even in the face of the Senate’s damning torture
report released in 2014. When asked about the agency’s decision to
conduct forced “rectal feeding” on a detainee, he refused to answer
whether that amounted to torture. Mr. Morell has also been an outspoken
cheerleader for indiscriminate C.I.A. drone strikes that have killed at
least hundreds of civilians. He most recently made headlines when he
told Charlie Rose the United States should be “killing Russians and
Iranians” — two countries the United States is not at war with — in Syria.

North Korea Fires Missile Over Japan, Prompting New Sanctions Threats

Headline Sep 15, 2017

https://www.democracynow.org/2017/9/15/headlines/north_korea_fires_missile_over_japan_prompting_new_sanctions_threats

North Korea fired a ballistic missile across northern Japan Friday, just
days after the U.N. Security Council approved a new round of sanctions
against the North Korean regime. The intermediate-range missile
triggered air raid sirens across the island of Hokkaido, drawing
condemnation from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who called it
"totally unacceptable." In response to the test, South Korea conducted a
missile drill of its own, releasing a video showing the launch of
missiles capable of reaching any part of North Korea. This is South
Korean President Moon Jae-in.

*President Moon Jae-in*: "North Korea should clearly realize that it
is entering a path of downfall, due to a diplomatic and economic
isolation as much as it increases frequency and strength of reckless
   provocation."

At the U.N., the Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on
North Korea this afternoon. In a statement, Secretary of State Rex
Tillerson called on China and Russia to take "direct action"—including
new sanctions on oil exports and North Korean labor. Last month,
President Trump threatened to unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea,
and the U.S. has not ruled out a nuclear first strike.

A glance at the map shows that North Korean access to the sea is almost
completely blocked by Japan. There's virtually no way that an
intermediate-range missile could be fired to fall to seaward except over
Japan, and instead of onto the inhabited Asian land mass of Russia or
China. in this case, over Hokkaido, the northernmost Japanese island,
with the least population. Of Japan's 127 million people, only a little
over 5 million live on Hokkaido. I'm sure apologies all around. They
brew a decent beverage on Hokkaido, by the way, Sapporo beer.

Russia has a long history of working to cultivate Western separatist
groups. The group Yes California, for instance, set up a makeshift
embassy in Moscow in December in partnership with far-right Russian
nationalists who enjoy Kremlin support while promoting secessionist
movements in Europe and the United States.

But the revelation that the Texas Nationalist Movement — whose executive
director, Nathan Smith, traveled to Moscow in 2015 for a far-right
conference attended by neo-Nazis and European fringe groups — was
contacted to participate in widespread protests by a page Facebook
believes to be linked to Russia marks a significant escalation in the
Russians' efforts to influence the United States' political climate.

Part 2 of response to Chris Slee

On Turkey's role in Syria, Chris asks:

“If the "rebels" are no longer fighting the Assad regime, should they
still be called "rebels"? Some former rebel groups have become
instruments of Turkish intervention in Syria.”

Turkey has held back the rebels in the region it occupies in the north
from fighting Assad, just as the SDF does not fight Assad. So we could
say they are more or less on the same wavelength. Or does Chris think
whatever the SDF does is OK, they don’t have to lift a finger against
Assad to be called “rebels”, they can be far-and-away the most totally
US-backed force in Syria, which only fights ISIS and never Assad, and
still get called “rebels”, but those who went through hell fighting
both Assad and ISIS for years are immediately denied rebel status as
soon as they are forced into a compromise situation due to the entire
international intervention against them.

These are all (or mostly) real rebel forces, formed by people whose
purpose was and is trying to oust the regime. Currently they are in a
bind. But that does not make them all puppets, any more than the SDF
are US puppets due to their close, long-term, strategic cooperation
with the US. The situation remains fluid. There have also been some
confrontations with Turkish forces at times. But what Chris ignores
here too is the geography: the main reason the rebels in the northern
Aleppo countryside region could not fight Assad as he crushed eastern
Aleppo city was that their passage south to the city was blocked, by
the YPG/SDF in the Arab-majority Tal Rifaat region, which they had
seized from the rebels under bloody Russian air cover in early 2016;
meanwhile, the only other way through to Aleppo city would have been
a-Bab, which was held by ISIS. And of course, neither the SDF nor ISIS
fight the Assad regime in that region. This inability of the FSA due
to this geography to fight Assad there is what allowed both the US and
Russia to back the Turkish-FSA Euphrates Shield operation against
ISIS, because there was no danger of this bolstering the FSA against
Assad as well.

“The Turkish-backed groups are fighting the Syrian Democratic Forces, not ISIS.”

Yes Chris, and Assad is fighting US imperialism, the US is supporting
ISIS and Nusra, and Trotsky was an agent of the Gestapo. Uncritical
SDF supporters need to get over this kind of thing.

The Turkey-FSA-rebel alliance (‘Euphrates Shield’) cleared ISIS from a
vast swathe of territory, between Azaz and Jarablus and down to
al-Bab. The SDF was not present in any of those places. There were
brief clashes initially in the region between SDF-occupied Manbij and
Euphrates Shield-occupied Jarablus, rapidly brought to an end by US
pressure on Turkey to back off. While I opposed the Turkish
intervention, and I pointed out that this use of the FSA against ISIS
in that region was not the main priority *at that moment* when Free
Aleppo needed more defence against the main enemy, things are
“complex” - of course I still hail the liberation of these areas from
ISIS terror. Now that they are not being bombed every day by Assad
(due to the Turkish presence), they have the opportunity to develop
some political institutions in peace, and perhaps strengthen their
forces if they do intend to renew their struggle with Assad. I would
have thought doing deals with Assad to not get bombed - for years on
end - was precisely a strategy the YPG/SDF and their supporters
approved of.

Regarding my discussion of the counterrevolutionary dealing between
Russia, Turkey and Assad over Idlib and Afrin, Chris responds:

“There has already been a "counterrevolutionary agreement" between
Turkey, Russia and Assad. Last year some Turkish-backed groups
withdrew from Aleppo city and other areas where they had been fighting
against Assad's forces. Some of them were transferred to the northern
part of Aleppo province in order to fight against the SDF.”

Again, Chris’ Orwellian point at the end: no, they were transferred to
northern Aleppo province to fight ISIS, not the SDF. The reason SDF
supporters make this odd claim is because they believe the entire
Azaz-Jarablus-Al Bab region, despite being majority Arab and Turkmen
in composition, and despite having been controlled by the rebels
before the ISIS conquest, “rightfully” belongs to the SDF. No-one else
knows why.

On the rest, if Chris thinks that the transferring of rebel cadre from
Aleppo city to the front against ISIS in the north was a
counterrevolutionary agreement (as I have written in numerous
articles), then presumably he also thinks that the role of the SDF in
the Tal Rifaat region north of Aleppo, where it

The Grayzone Project at Alternet is a primary source of Assadist
propaganda, the latest instance of which is a 5,226 word article by
Gareth Porter titled “Have We Been Deceived Over Syrian Sarin Attack?
Scrutinizing the Evidence in an Incident Trump Used to Justify Bombing
Syria”. It denies that the Syrian dictatorship unleashed a sarin gas
attack in Khan Sheikhoun on April 4th and instead puts the blame on an
accidental release of phosphine gas when a warehouse containing aluminum
phosphide was bombed. As has been claimed by a number of Assadist

than sarin gas that caused over a hundred deaths.

From May 22, 2017:

In May 2016, Secretary of State John Kerry advised European banks to
proceed full speed ahead investing in Iran, even if American banks still
could not. It didn’t take too long for American corporations to take
advantage of the thaw. On April 4, 2017 Iran signed a deal pay Boeing
$4 billion for 60 jets to refurbish its aging state-owned airline. I am
generally not in the business of playing Nostradamus but I am predicting
that Trump will okay the deal. After all, Calvin Coolidge got it right
when he said that the business of America was business.

Trump Signals He Will Choose Approach on Iran That Preserves Nuclear Deal
By DAVID E. SANGER

WASHINGTON — President Trump kept the Iran nuclear deal alive on
Thursday as a critical deadline lapsed, a sign that he is stepping back
from his threat to abandon an agreement he repeatedly disparaged. He is
moving instead to push back on Iran’s ambitions in the Middle East in
