Mexico’s next president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO for short) is
still three months away from taking office, but some of his campaign trail
promises already seem distant, writes Ryan Mallett-Outtrim from Puebla.

Homes

https://virl.bibliocommons.com/item/show/1419987107

"Homes tells the story of Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, a young boy whose family moved
from Iraq to Syria just before the start of the Syrian civil war. It recounts
what it was like living in Syria during this time -- the normal things like
video games, sleepovers, and family jarringly juxtaposed with car bombings,
massacres, and the constant threat of what could happen next. In 2014 the
family finally found safety in immigrating to Edmonton, Canada, and the book
also recounts both the gratefulness and the loneliness of the family's
immigration experience."--

Tomorrow I'll have a review of "The Little Stranger" in Counterpunch, a
film about three aristocrats who have fallen on hard times. Set in 1946,
it is a mixture of "Fall of the House of Usher" and class conflict as a
doctor whose mother worked as a maid at the estate tries to bond with
the Ayres family that retain their class snobbery even though they are
almost penniless.

To help get a grasp of the historical background, I looked at David
Cannadine's "The Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy" that
explains why this happened to most of the landed gentry during
Gladstone's Liberal Party rule.

It raises an interesting question. If such landlords were key to the
rise of capitalism in England, why did the Liberal Party--the embodiment
of capitalism in its maturity--effectively destroy the rural
bourgeoisie. Too bad Brenner and his acolytes are so little interested
in anything happening after the 16th century.

Interesting as always with Richard. But again, as always, his imaginary is
drawn to the intractable, the complex that cannot be solved. At times it
seems to me that Ricard's thought is a series of long variations on the
theme of "pessimism of the intellect." The reference to biopolitics &
Foucault is not incidental. There are echoes here of Nietzschean thought
of the Will to Power as the defining aspect of the human, and so there is
no ground for a resolution or hope for a Utopian rupture.

I think he also underestimates the historical role of and need for Arab
labour. It is true that since the 1990s the Israelis have substituted
"foreign" workers (to the level of about 77k) for Palestinians. But the
point is that Israel has always been dependent on Arab leader complicity in
the Zionist project and Arab help within Israel to make the Israeli state
viable.

I also know from my experience of growing up as a Catholic in Northern
Ireland, and Richard would agree with this, that a state which declares a
growing section of its own population as "the enemy" is permanently
unstable.

Richard does make the point that "Israel depends far too much on
international support". That is true, and it is why the BDS movement is
such a threat.

My own critique, and one I fear that Richard would not recognize, is that
Israel's true weakness is that it is not a moral undertaking. It is an
ensemble of what Bhaskar would have called power2 master-slave
relationships. Israel rests on a layer of dirty business - torture, arrest
without trial, spying, bribery, murder, and regular burst of slaughter.
Most states of course also depend on a layer of artisans who specialize in
dirty business. But in Israel the proponents of dirty business are in
charge out there in the open and increasingly they are a scandal to all our
humanity. Moreover, the social media meant that this morning I could see
the dirty work with a consciousness forming immediacy that the likes of
Murdoch and the Mainstream Media can no longer control.

In my youth the idealists at the university boasted were proud of their
work in the kibbutzim. No one does that now. No one. The Israeli
ambassador to the UK, Regev recently advised the Labour Friends of Israel
that they should highlight the misogyny and homophobia of the opponents of
Israe. That was a desperate attempt to hold on to the notion that there is
something intrinsically good about Israel. The Zionist myth that the
redemption and sanctification of Israel would lead to the redemption and
sanctification of all humanity, has never seemed so sadly bizarre.

All around this troubled world where the Alt-right gather they fly the flag
of Israel. We are now confronted with the realtity that scumbags, who are
deeply anti-semitic, support Israel. They are all the way with Netanyahu,
as they march mouthing their filthy chant "Jews will not replace us". There
is no surer sign of the inevitable failure of the Zionist project.

My critique then rests on the proposition that there is a fundamental moral
impulse in the human and no one can violate that imperative for long
without suffering a breakdown. That also applies at the level of the
state. And to make a final return to Richard's theme, it is here that one
finds the true similarity between South Africa and the Israeli state.

comradely

Gary

Socialism and Democracy is looking for someone to review:

New Dark Age: Technology and the End of the Future by James Bridle.

Publisher's blurb:

As the world around us increases in technological complexity, our

understanding of it diminishes. Underlying this trend is a single idea:

the belief that our existence is understandable through computation, and

more data is enough to help us build a better world.

In reality, we are lost in a sea of information, increasingly divided

by fundamentalism, simplistic narratives, conspiracy theories, and post-

factual politics. Meanwhile, those in power use our lack of

understanding to further their own interests. Despite the apparent

accessibility of information, we're living in a new Dark Age.

From rogue financial systems to shopping algorithms, from artificial

intelligence to state secrecy, we no longer understand how our world is

governed or presented to us. The media is filled with unverifiable

speculation, much of it generated by anonymous software, while

companies dominate their employees through surveillance and the threat

 of automation.

In his brilliant new work, leading artist and writer James Bridle

surveys the history of art, technology, and information systems,

and reveals the dark clouds that gather over our dreams of the

 digital sublime.

NY Times, Aug. 30, 2018
The Religion of Whiteness Becomes a Suicide Cult
By Pankaj Mishra

Mr. Mishra is a contributing opinion writer focused on ideas and politics.

“White men,” an obscure Australian academic named Charles Henry Pearson
predicted in his 1893 book “National Life and Character: A Forecast,”
would be “elbowed and hustled, and perhaps even thrust aside” by people
they had long regarded as their inferiors — “black and yellow races.”
China, in particular, would be a major threat. Pearson, prone to terrors
of racial extinction while living in a settler colony in an Asian
neighborhood, thought it was imperative to defend “the last part of the
world, in which the higher races can live and increase freely, for the
higher civilization.”

His prescriptions for racial self-defense thunderously echoed around the
white Anglosphere, the community of men with shared historical ties to
Britain. Theodore Roosevelt, who held a complacent 19th-century faith,
buttressed by racist pseudoscience, that nonwhite peoples were
hopelessly inferior, reported to Pearson the “great effect” of his book
among “all our men here in Washington.”

In the years that followed, politicians and pundits in Britain and its
settler colonies of Australia, Canada and the United States would
jointly forge an identity geopolitics of the “higher races.” Today it
has reached its final and most desperate phase, with existential fears
about endangered white power feverishly circulating once again between
the core and periphery of the greatest modern empire. “The fundamental
question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive,”
President Trump said last year in a speech hailed by the British
journalist Douglas Murray, the Canadian columnist Mark Steyn and the
American editor Rich Lowry. More recently, Mr. Trump tweeted (falsely)
about “large-scale killing” of white farmers in South Africa — a
preoccupation, deepened by Rupert Murdoch’s media, of white supremacists
around the world.

To understand the rapid mainstreaming of white supremacism in
English-speaking liberal democracies today, we must examine the
experience of unprecedented global migration and racial mixing in the
Anglosphere in the late 19th century: countries such as the United
States and Australia where, as Roosevelt wrote admiringly in 1897,
“democracy, with the clear instinct of race selfishness, saw the race
foe, and kept out the dangerous alien.” It is in the motherlands of
democracy rather than in fascist Europe that racial hierarchies first
defined the modern world. It is also where a last-ditch and potentially
calamitous battle to preserve them is being fought today.

This “race selfishness” was sharpened in the late 19th century, as the
elites of the “higher races” struggled to contain mass disaffection
generated by the traumatic change of globalization: loss of jobs and
livelihoods amid rapid economic growth and intensified movements of
capital, goods and labor. For fearful ruling classes, political order
depended on their ability to forge an alliance between, as Hannah Arendt
wrote, “capital and mob,” between rich and powerful whites and those
rendered superfluous by industrial capitalism. Exclusion or degradation
of nonwhite peoples seemed one way of securing dignity for those
marginalized by economic and technological shifts.

The political climate was prepared by intellectuals with clear-cut
racial theories, such as Brooks Adams, a Boston Brahmin friend of
Roosevelt, and Charles B. Davenport, the leading American exponent of
eugenics. In Australia, Pearson’s social Darwinism was amplified by
media barons like Keith Murdoch (father of Rupert and a stalwart of the
eugenics movement) and institutionalized in a “White Australia” policy
that restricted “colored” migration for most of the 20th century.
Anti-minority passions in the United States peaked with the 1924
immigration law (much admired by Hitler and, more recently, by Jeff
Sessions), which impeded Jewish immigrants and barred Asians entirely.
By the early 20th century, violence against indigenous peoples,
immigrants and African-Americans reached a new ferocity, and nativist
and racist demagogues entrenched a politics of dispossession,
segregation and disenfranchisement.

Seeking to maintain white power globally, Roosevelt helped transform the
United States into a major imperialist power. Woodrow Wilson, too,
worked to preserve, as he put it, “white civilization and its domination
of the planet” even as he patented the emollient rhetoric of liberal
internationalism that many in the American political and media

US Officials Met with Assad Regime in June
https://eaworldview.com/2018/08/syria-daily-us-officials-met-with-assad-regime-in-june/

Just in time, that is, for the US-Israeli backed Assad reconquista of
southern Syria:

"The meeting took place weeks after a pro-Assad offensive, enabled by
Russian airstrikes and using conventional and chemical weapons,
reoccupied East Ghouta near Damascus.
"The US then warned against an attack by the regime and its foreign
allies on opposition areas of southern Syria. However, just before the
June meeting, American officials told rebels that they could not count
on any support, and the pro-Assad offensive — again enabled by Russia
— seized the territory within weeks"

Aaron J. Leonard says:

"Malinovsky is referred to by Lenin in "Left Wing Communism: An Infantile
Disorder." Lenin says, on the one hand, Malinovsky sent thousands of committed
Bolsheviks to prison and death. On the other, tens of thousands were recruited
to the party. He's a template for why we don't need to worry about informants.
He's on the central committee of the Bolshevik Party. He's their representative
on the international. He is one of three people charged with ferreting out spies
in the Bolshevik Party. Yet he's an informant.

"Lenin saw in Malinovsky what he wanted to see: a working class guy who was an
intellectual and was willing to fight for the cause. [...]

"If Malinovsky actually did more good than harm for the Bolsheviks because he
was a good party member as well as an informant, then by that logic, let's have
twenty Malinovskys. Maybe we ought to just have all police informants because
then, jeez, we can seize state power. The logic does not hold."

This is stupid. First, what did Lenin write?

"While Malinovsky with one hand sent scores and
scores of the best Bolsheviks to penal servitude and to death, he
was obliged with the other to assist in the education of scores and
scores of thousands of new Bolsheviks through the medium of the
legal press."

"Scores and scores," not "thousands." And Lenin adds, in a footnote:

"Malinovsky was a prisoner-of-war in Germany . When he returned to Russia
under the rule of the Bolsheviks, he was instantly put on trial and shot by our
workers. The Mensheviks attacked us most bitterly for our mistake in allowing
an agent-provocateur to become a member of the Central Committee of our Party .
But when, under Kerensky, we demanded the arrest and trial of Rodzyanko, the
speaker of the Duma, because he had known even before the war that Malinovsky
was an agent-provocateur and had not informed the Trudoviks (peasant deputies .-
Ed.] and the workers in the Duma of this fact, neither the Mensheviks nor the
Socialist-Revolutionaries in Kerensky's cabinet supported our demand, and
Rodzyanko
remained at large and went off unhindered to join Denikin."

Much more could be said about this incident;see, for ex., Victor Serge's
account in " What everyone should know about repression,"
https://www.marxists.org/archive/serge/1926/repression/ch1a.htm#s8, Chapter
VIII.

In the interests of historical accuracy, at the very least,
Richard

With the low unemployment, something has to give in the US, and that
something is a tendency towards increased militancy on the job. The most
noticeable event of this was the teacher strikes throughout the US. By no
coincidence, most (if not all) of these strikes have been in
Republican-controlled states (W. Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky). That's
because it's in these states that the budget, including for education, has
been slashed the most severely. Now there is a follow up to those strikes
in that many of the incumbent Republicans who voted against measures that
would raise teacher pay are being voted out in their primaries. This
doesn't mean that the Democrats will necessarily retake those seats, but it
means a beginning of a shift away from the "small government" craze. In
other words, the beginning of a shift in the consciousness. Here's the
article that outlines what's happening:

AMR KHALED IS one of the most popular religious preachers in the Arab
World. In 2007, Time magazine even counted the televangelist among the
hundred most influential people in the world. Earlier this summer,
Khaled issued a public apology due to outrage at his endorsement of a
brand of poultry on an Egyptian cooking show. In an episode now known as
“chicken-gate,” Khaled contended that consuming “al-Wataniyyah” chicken
had spiritual benefits, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
Khaled had been criticized before for his embrace of corporate Islam.
This time, however, the Egyptian public had simply had enough of
religion put to such crude use. Could it be that Islam is no longer so
usable?

Such anger at the peddling of religious piety in the Arab World is
linked to a much broader decline in both mainstream and radical currents
of political Islamism. Since the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 and the end
of the Muslim Brotherhood’s first and last government in Egypt,
mainstream Islamists command a mere fraction of the mobilizing strength
they enjoyed during their high noon in the 1990s. In fact, all varieties
of Islamism in Arab politics are now on the defensive. Even jihadi
militants have begun a metamorphosis into something altogether different
since the rise and fall of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant
(ISIL). While the traditional critique of religious political parties
has come from the left, the attack on Islamism now largely proceeds from
the right. This invites the question: what does conservatism look like
in the Arab world if it is anti-Islamist?

[Marxism] Algae Bloom in Lake Superior Raises Worries on Climate Change and Tourism

NY Times, Aug. 30, 2018
Algae Bloom in Lake Superior Raises Worries on Climate Change and Tourism
By Christine Hauser

In 19 years of piloting his boat around Lake Superior, Jody Estain had
never observed the water change as it has this summer. The lake has been
unusually balmy and cloudy, with thick mats of algae blanketing the
shoreline.

“I have never seen it that warm,” said Mr. Estain, a former Coast Guard
member who guides fishing, cave and kayak tours year-round. “Everybody
was talking about it.”

But it was not just recreational observers along the shores of the lake
who noticed the changes with concern. Lake Superior, the largest of the
Great Lakes with more than 2,700 miles of shoreline, is the latest body
of water to come under increased scrutiny by scientists after the
appearance this summer of the largest mass of green, oozing algae ever
detected on the lake.

From the Gulf Coast to the northernmost shores of the United States,
scientists and government officials are working to decipher algae blooms
to help them interpret the causes of the blooms, changes to their
climates, and the effects the blooms have on public health and regional
environments.

Scientists generally agree that algae blooms are getting worse and more
widespread, and are exacerbated by the warmer water, heat waves and
extreme weather associated with climate change. They are also
intensified by human activity, such as from farm and phosphorus runoff,
leakage from sewer systems, and other pollution.

The problems that algae blooms pose to fresh and marine waters have been
propelled to the forefront in recent years by high-profile events like
the shutdown of the water supply in Toledo, Ohio, in 2014 after toxic
algae formed over the city’s water-intake pipe in Lake Erie, as well as
the production of a toxin by a species of algae off the West Coast in 2015.

More recently, in the waters off southwestern Florida, a toxic algal
bloom known as a red tide persisted this year for more than nine months,
the longest time period since 2006. The overgrowth killed wildlife and
made some beaches noxious.

Other areas, including the Finger Lakes in New York and Utah Lake south
of Salt Lake City, have also experienced an unusually high number of
blooms in recent years.

This week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s
laboratory for environmental research on the Great Lakes warned that
some parts of Lake Erie were not fit for recreational activities because
of an algal bloom.

Starting in August in Lake Superior, reports of the thick, green algae
stretching along about 50 miles of the southern shore reached Robert
Sterner, the director of the Large Lakes Observatory at the University
of Minnesota Duluth, and his team.

“We believe it to be the largest, most intense bloom yet,” he said. “I
have been emphasizing we are talking about a small volume of Lake
Superior, but it is a very highly prized, recreational part of the lake.”

Dr. Sterner said that while scientists did not completely understand the
causes and frequency of blooms, they start with warmer water. And Lake
Superior, he said, “is one of the fastest-warming lakes on eart
Algae blooms are a natural occurrence, but certain species can be toxic.
While the species of algae found in Lake Superior can become toxic, Dr.
Sterner said, tests showed that none of its commonly occurring toxins
were found in hazardous concentrations.

Harmful algal blooms are a “national problem,” Donald M. Anderson, a
senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, told the
Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation in Washington
on Tuesday.

“Their increasing frequency and intensity are impacting the economics
and environmental health of communities, states, tribes and regions
around the nation,” he testified.

In an interview on Wednesday, Dr. Anderson said that scientists were
seeing outbreaks surging in places they had not appeared before.

“The fresh water problem has exploded in the United States,” he said.
“But even on the marine side, we are seeing events larger in scale.”

Scientists and National Park Service employees were unaware of any
noticeable blue-green algae blooms in Lake Superior before July 2012,
when visitors reported surface scum along a 15-mile stretch of shore
near the Apostle Islands, Dr. Sterner said.

That was after 10 inches of rain drenched the Duluth region, wrecking
infrastructure and shooting a plume of sediment into the lake, Minnesota
Public Radio reported this month in a feature about this summer’s algae
blooms.

Reality hit hard for the left when whistleblower Reality Winner was
sentenced to five years, three months in prison with three years of
supervision after release and 100 hours of community service. Surely it
was another pussy hat liberal Russiagate deep state hoax that is
descending on the honorable leftist blogosphere? Actually, it was just
the opposite. Winner heroically revealed an attempt by Russian military
intelligence to interfere with U.S. elections. And guess who slapped her
with the longest sentence for a federal defendant who disclosed
information to the media? It couldn’t be the very same man who is
challenging globalism, the deep state and the new liberal world order as
we know it, albeit on twitter? Yes, it could be actually.

This is a hard pill to swallow for what Jeffrey St. Clair calls the
Sputnik Left. Reality Winner showed us the punishment taken for real
resistance to the authoritarian Trump administration. Winner not only
called Trump the “Orange Fascist”, she was brave enough to reveal the
conspiracy liberals have pretended to be chasing and leftists have been
denying for the last year and a half. Those who are outraged by Julian
Assange’s case and not by Reality Winner’s case are just as hypocritical
as liberals who may be divided the opposite way.

Yesterday, we got the data for US corporate profits in the second
quarter of 2018, along with a revised estimate for US real GDP growth.
On the GDP front, the ‘annualised’ rate of growth was revised up to
4.2%, the strongest rate on that measure since the middle of 2014. But
this was after some very poor annualised rates (below 2%) in 2015 and
2016. So it’s a bounce back from poor growth.
