Again, who could have seen this coming?! (Or may be some did?)

"The SDF could "agree to be part of the national army of a future Syria,
but only on the condition they keep their special status", Mr Kobani said."

That link certainly raises questions like, “What’s Happening? What’s Next?” but

NY Times Op-Ed, Jan. 25, 2018
Are We Watching the End of the Monarch Butterfly?
By Mary Ellen Hannibal

(Ms. Hannibal writes about science and the environment from San Francisco.)

For almost 30 years, hundreds of volunteers have helped document monarch
butterfly numbers at more than 200 sites across California, from
Mendocino to San Diego. A small group of these citizen scientists
recently descended on the sleepy coastal town of Bolinas, near Stinson
Beach, north of San Francisco, to conduct the latest tally in a place
where thousands of these butterflies were once counted during their
winter migration.

The group was met by Mia Monroe, a ranger for the National Park Service
for 40 years. She was representing the Xerces Society, a nonprofit
devoted to invertebrate conservation.

“We aren’t expecting many butterflies today,” Ms. Monroe warned. Monarch
numbers have been plummeting for decades, and recent surveys of their
breeding habitats had reported low numbers. Making matters worse, only
weeks before, wildfires had swept through the region, engulfing the Bay
Area with smoke for two weeks.

“Maybe the monarchs have taken a different route, around the fire and
smoke?” someone asked. “That’s a dream,” Ms. Monroe said. “But we are
here to honor the survivors, and to be together in a difficult moment.”

Directing us to move with stealth into a lot overgrown with poison oak
vines and blackberry brambles, she pointed to a ring of eucalyptus
trees. The morning had begun cold but the temperature had inched past 54
degrees, when monarchs begin to emerge from their slumber. The brown and
green branches of one tree were stirring, as if a slight breeze was
ruffling the dun-colored leaves. But then a distinctive orange color
revealed itself. Butterflies peeled off from the branches, each one
opening like a warm kiss before fluttering into the air.

Increasingly, people without formal backgrounds in science are
collaborating with scientists to collect data on a scale that scientists
alone would be unable to compile. The work of these people in recording
the exact time, place and conditions of their butterfly observations is
vital to monitoring the health of monarch populations. Tracking these
butterflies is one of the longest-standing examples of this kind of
teamwork.

Over the period of a year, monarchs produce four to five generations.
The last and longest-lasting of them is born between August and October.
Unlike their predecessors, which live as butterflies for a mere two to
four weeks, these monarchs survive for six to eight months. After
staying put over the winter in Mexico or California, they disperse in
March or April, spreading far and wide in search of milkweed upon which
to lay their eggs. Larvae then morph into caterpillars that become the
next generation of butterflies The final generation in this yearlong
cycle will return to the same California coast as their ancestors did.
How these butterflies find their place of origin remains a mystery.

Last year’s count in Bolinas had been very low; still, the trees had
been festooned with scores of butterfly clumps, in which hundreds of
monarchs hung together for warmth and protection. This time, there was
just one clump. Later we would learn that the total count of this site
in Bolinas, which the previous year tallied 12,360 butterflies,
plummeted this winter to just 1,256 monarchs. “This animal story that
has been going on for centuries and perhaps thousands of years is
disappearing and may be gone” soon, Ms. Monroe told us, her eyes tearing.

The total number of West Coast monarchs was estimated at approximately
4.5 million in the 1980s. In the latest count, that number fell to
28,429, dipping below the number scientists estimate is needed to keep
the population going. This drastic decline indicates the migration is
collapsing. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to
announce in June whether its scientists think the monarch qualifies for
protection under the Endangered Species Act.

We love butterflies but tally them in transactional and utilitarian
terms. We say that losing so many is dangerous because in their life
stages from pupa to imago they provide food for creatures higher up the
food chain. Fewer butterflies means fewer birds, and we need birds, in
part, to help control other insects, like mosquitoes, that carry
dangerous diseases. We acknowledge that the biotic world only works by
way of the networks that connect each species in a web of life. We must
take account of our role in the demise of this species, a consequence of
habitat loss, climate

Russian oligarchs and Kremlin apparatchiks may find the tables turned on them
later this week when a new leak site unleashes a compilation of hundreds of
thousands of hacked emails and gigabytes of leaked documents. Think of it as
WikiLeaks, but without Julian Assange’s aversion to posting Russian secrets.

The site, Distributed Denial of Secrets, was founded last month by transparency
activists. Co-founder Emma Best said the Russian leaks, slated for release
Friday, will bring into one place dozens of different archives of hacked
material that, at best, have been difficult to locate, and in some cases appear
to have disappeared entirely from the web.

“Stuff from politicians, journalists, bankers, folks in oligarch and religious
circles, nationalists, separatists, terrorists operating in Ukraine,” said
Best, a national-security journalist and transparency activist. “Hundreds of
thousands of emails, Skype and Facebook messages, along with lots of docs.”

Pouring money into politics and hoping for power has only resulted in the
AFL-CIO falling by the wayside. It’s time for unions to go back to working
for the workers

For the political left in America today, the future is bright. The
seriousness of inequality is now conventional wisdom. Socialism is no
longer a political punchline. The popularity of unions is high
.
It would seem to be the best time in a half-century to revitalize the
languishing labor movement. Yet with all of the political energy – and
despite some high-profile successes – the labor movement as a whole still
languishes. Why?

Ideally, the labor movement, which represents the interests of everyone who
works for a living, would be the strongest progressive force in the
country. Its appeal is broader than that of any special interest or
specific issue. It has the virtue of combining self-interest (it will raise
your wages), public interest (it will rebuild a strong middle class), and
pure righteousness (it puts power into the hands of everyone, not just a
privileged few). The left should be led by labor, and labor should be led
by a strong AFL-CIO. But today, neither of those things are true. The left
is a wild coalition of causes, united most fervently not behind union
leaders but behind a cast of political figures like Bernie Sanders and
Alexandria
Ocasio-Cortez
whose
message of democratic socialism and economic equality is … exactly what the
labor movement should represent. Unions have fallen so far out of the
public consciousness that they have to rely on politicians to get their
points across. That’s not good. Organized labor should be leading elected
officials to the public, not vice versa. It’s hard to do that when scarcely
a tenth of the work force you claim to represent are union members.

By a happy coincidence, I received a review copy of “Radical America
Komiks” from PM Press on the very day my review of Allen Young’s
autobiography appeared on CounterPunch. Allen Young worked for
Liberation News Service (LNS), a radical version of the Associated Press
that forwarded articles to SDS chapters around the country, while
Radical America was an official SDS publication launched by Paul Buhle
meant to raise awareness on the left about the long history of
anti-capitalist resistance in the USA. Unlike the old left, LNS and
Radical America absorbed the counter-culture of the period. The one-off
publication of Radical America Komiks in 1969 was arguably the most
fully developed expression of this cross-fertilization and as such we
are grateful to PM Press for publishing a replica of the ground-breaking
comic book.

Back in 1967, about a month or so after joining the quintessentially
old-left Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party, fellow New School Graduate
philosophy Ph.D. student Arthur Maglin who had recruited me to the sect,
was showing me around the bookstore at party headquarters near Union
Square. He picked up a copy of Radical America and described it as great
reading. Just a decade later, something like Radical America would never
be found in an SWP bookstore and recommending it might have gotten you
expelled. When I got on the Internet in 1991, it did not take long for
me to establish a connection with Paul Buhle whose vision of left unity
coincided with my own as a refugee from sectarianism. I only wish that I
could have gotten into a time-machine and returned to 1967 to help write
for Radical America. I once asked Peter Camejo if he could have turned
back the clock, when he would have made the decision to quit the
SWP—knowing what he then knew. Without skipping a beat, he replied the
week after he joined.

NY Times, Jan. 25, 2019
A Nuclear Site Guard Accused Colleagues of Sexual Assault. Then She Was
Fired.

By Katie Benner

Smoke blinded the security guards inside a warehouse at a nuclear
weapons facility in Nevada. Clangs and shouts filled the air.

Amid the din, a guard named Jennifer Glover was thrown to the ground,
handcuffed and hit across the face with the butt of a gun. One man ran
his hands up her legs, she said, then grabbed her buttocks and groin.
Another flipped her over, reached into her top to grab her breasts and
ripped out her nipple ring.

By the time the smoke cleared, they had disappeared.

Ms. Glover could not identify her attackers. But she said she knew they
were her colleagues, fellow guards taking part in a training exercise at
the Energy Department’s highly classified Nevada National Security Site,
where researchers and scientists conduct top-secret nuclear experiments
and develop responses to chemical, biological and nuclear emergencies.

The encounter in November 2017 followed months of sexual harassment that
she said began soon after she was hired. Her troubles worsened after she
reported the attack: Men continued to harass and intimidate her, she
said, and they accused her of informing on them. She was reprimanded for
calling out sick, which she said she did to avoid her attackers, and was
ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluations.

“Work went from being so exciting to being a nightmare,” said Ms.
Glover, who described her experience in an interview with The New York
Times, as did three other current or former security guards, all of whom
she had confided in as the events unfolded.

Ms. Glover accused her co-workers, called security police officers, or
SPOs, of repeated harassment.

Her accusations highlighted an entrenched culture of discrimination and
retaliation on her team, known as the Proforce, that employees say
flourished under two government contractors, Centerra and SOC, according
to the interviews; Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaints
she filed against the contractors; and a review of internal documents,
including emails between Ms. Glover and human resources managers.

“A significant portion of the Proforce do not believe they can raise a
safety issue without fear of reprisal,” officials wrote in a 2015 health
and safety report by the Energy Department.

The attack on Ms. Glover underscores the difficulty of changing a
hypermasculine culture, even as accounts of workplace sexual harassment
and assault have drawn widespread condemnation and pledges to do better
in the #MeToo era.

Ms. Glover was never told whether management identified or disciplined
her attackers. After the encounter, two guards were suspended for days
for “knowingly spreading false and malicious stories or rumors about
other employees,” according to letters between Centerra and their union
representative obtained by The Times. Their role in Ms. Glover’s attack,
if any, was unclear.

Ultimately, after The Times began asking about the attack, Ms. Glover
was fired for scheduling infractions and taking a photo of her schedule,
which SOC called “company documents.” Her use of profanity also placed
“the safety of the site in jeopardy,” according to her termination
letter from SOC, which began managing the security force last spring.

Ms. Glover’s termination letter cited her use of profanity and “general
disrespect.”

Centerra, the nuclear site’s security contractor at the time of the
assault, declined to comment beyond saying that it creates “work
environments free from all forms of harassment and retaliation.” A
spokeswoman for SOC, Holly Holt, said this article contained
“significant inaccuracies in the facts and premise” but declined to be
more specific.

“We expect our contractors to address any allegations of inappropriate
behavior and hold employees accountable for any misconduct that occurs
following a full and timely investigation,” said Lindsey Geisler, a
spokeswoman for the Energy Department.

Early Worries

When a recruiter for Centerra reached out to Ms. Glover in 2016 about a
job, it “sounded too good to be true,” she said.

She had been a gun range safety officer and owned her “own armory.” She
was an amateur bodybuilder, a pursuit that prepared her for the job’s
physical demands. Centerra offered $130,000 a year, a sizable salary
that she could support her two children on as a single mother.

“This job was everything I’d ever wanted,” she said. She eagerly applied
and was hired.

In 2015 after Jeremy Corbyn won the leadership, John McDonnell said that
Socialism is no longer a word you have to whisper in Labour. Fighting
talk, but the 2017 manifesto promised only limited nationalisations and
the current direction is firmly for a mixed economy with some regulation
and a few modest tax increases – in other words a solid social
democratic agenda.

The painfully moderate nature of Labour’s politics leads to a strange
cognitive dissonance where activists herald Corbyn’s Labour as both a
huge left-wing breakthrough whilst also pointing out that it is no more
radical than Norway in the 1980s. The notion of realigning Britain with
social democracy in Europe seems refreshing considering the last 40
years of neoliberalism and a decade of austerity, but there is little
indication that we are developing a critical appreciation of the
problems and near-collapse of social democracy.

NY Times, Jan. 25, 2019
The $238 Million Penthouse, and the Hedge Fund Billionaire Who May
Rarely Live There

By Nikita Stewart and David Gelles

In Manhattan, where multimillion-dollar real estate sales are downright
routine, a hedge fund tycoon has managed to set a new standard for
conspicuous consumption by paying a fortune for an unfinished piece of
property in the sky.

The billionaire, Kenneth C. Griffin, spent $238 million for a penthouse
at 220 Central Park South that is still under construction, making it
the most expensive residential sale in United States history.

What’s more, in a New York tale that is not entirely uncommon, the
79-story building where Mr. Griffin’s penthouse will soon exist was
built after the landlord evicted dozens of middle class tenants from
their rent-stabilized apartments in what was a fairly modest,
white-brick building with 20 floors.

With a net worth estimated at $10 billion, Mr. Griffin, founder and
chief executive of the global investment firm Citadel, is among the
richest people in the world. And in recent years, Mr. Griffin has become
increasingly willing to flaunt his wealth, spending lavishly on modern
art, philanthropy and trophy real estate, even as income inequality is
roiling the national political debate.

Twice divorced, Mr. Griffin, 50, has three children and is primarily
based in Chicago, where Citadel is headquartered. Through a spokesman,
Mr. Griffin declined to comment for this story.

He is a globe-trotting home buyer, leaving a trail of his pricey
purchases, from a $60 million penthouse in Miami to a $122 million
mansion in London.

All told, according to a person familiar with Mr. Griffin’s spending, he
has spent approximately $700 million on real estate and nearly as much
on art.

He began collecting art more than a decade ago, acquiring works by
Cézanne and Monet. In 2006, he spent $80 million on a Jasper Johns
painting that he acquired from David Geffen. And in 2016, Mr. Griffin
paid $500 million to acquire two paintings — a Jackson Pollock and a
Willem de Kooning — this time from Mr. Geffen’s foundation, in what was
one of the largest-ever private art deals.

Mr. Griffin has declined to join other billionaires in a pact to donate
the majority of their wealth to charity. Created by Bill and Melinda
Gates and Warren Buffett in 2010, the Giving Pledge has more than 150
signees.

But Mr. Griffin has given away about $700 million, according to the
person familiar with his finances.

He is on the board of the Whitney Museum of American Art, which named
the lobby of its new building after him. He donated $40 million to the
Museum of Modern Art. Mr. Griffin and his ex-wife donated $19 million to
the Art Institute of Chicago. And at the Field Museum of Natural History
in Chicago, Mr. Griffin donated $16.5 million to fund the purchase of
the largest dinosaur ever discovered.

Mr. Griffin has also donated huge sums to educational institutions.

In 2014 he gave $150 million to Harvard University, the largest gift in
the school’s history. In 2017 Mr. Griffin’s charity said it would donate
$125 million to the University of Chicago, which would rename its
influential department of economics after him. More recently, Mr.
Griffin has turned his acquisitive eye toward real estate.

Fellow financiers said Mr. Griffin should be applauded for his
philanthropy, rather than vilified for his spending. John W. Rogers Jr.,
the chief executive of Ariel Investments, who serves on the board of the
University of Chicago with Mr. Griffin (as well as on the board of The
New York Times Company), declined to comment on his real estate
spending. “The key thing is that he’s decided to be generous now,” Mr.
Rogers said. “Ken is a role model for the next generation of hedge fund
managers.”

Mr. Griffin has cited his maternal grandparents as inspiration for his
philanthropy. They ran a fuel oil business in Illinois, and when some
customers could not pay their bills during the winter, his grandparents
would extend them credit.

The Harvard graduate made his fortune through finance. As a sophomore in
1987, Mr. Griffin began trading out of his dorm room using a fax
machine, an early personal computer and the phone. Just three years
later, he founded Citadel in Chicago.

The firm grew rapidly, and today Citadel, which is privately held,
manages some $28 billion, trading stocks, fixed income, commodities and
more.

And Mr. Griffin has proved adept at making a profit even during market
turbulence. Last year, Citadel’s flagship fund was up 9.1 percent,
despite a difficult end of the year for most
