but I believe this person is in Venezuela.

There was no coup in Venezuela

https://havanatimes.org/?p=152936

HAVANA TIMES – There was no coup d’etat in Venezuela on April 30th. Twenty-five
militarymen with a few tanks, on a highway bridge that passes in front of La
Carlota military base (in East Caracas); weren’t going to overthrow any
government.

The Miraflores Palace is at least 50 kms away from this military base. Nobody
attempts a coup and shoots in the opposite direction to where the president is.

If there really was any intention to carry out a coup, Guaido would have
crossed Caracas until he reached Miraflores. Or, he would have at least dropped
some bombs from a plane. That’s what Chavez did in his attempt to take power
from Carlos Andres Perez in 1992.

With the director of SEBIN (Bolivarian National Intelligence Service), Manuel
Ricardo Cristopher Figuera, on their side, then they could have achieved a lot
more… if that’s what they really wanted. But, clearly the coup (as Diosdado
Cabello declared it) was not Juan Guaido’s real intention, since it would look
a little strange in the international community’s eyes if a legitimate
president was attempting a coup against the government of an illegitimate
president.

In the beginning, it seemed so stupid to stop on a bridge with some boxes full
of bananas and ammunition, arming an entire communications network, as if it
were reality TV.

It was clear that they wouldn’t get anywhere and that afterwards, it would be
enough to demoralize those who wish for Maduro and his companions at Moraflores
to leave. As the hours passed on, I found out that Maduro had already named the
new director of SEBIN.

Saying “new” is a euphemism because he replaced him with the former director,
who wasn’t dismissed for leading one of the most blood-hungry repressive forces
in recent decades, but instead for having stopped the procession of the
presidential caravan; and to be perfectly clear: because he was Diosdao
Cabello’s confident.

During the hours the coup was allegedly taking place, Nicolas Maduro didn’t
issue a single statement. It was Diosdado Cabello who called upon groups known
as “Collectives” as well as other Chavista supporters and militia.

The twenty-five soldiers who stood with Guaido, are at the Brazilian embassy
requesting asylum.

At the very beginning, Juan Guaido said that they had seized the La Carlota
military base. Bad for him because media manipulation is proof that you can
manipulate people in other countries too. Yesterday, he was on the street,
along with thousands of anti-government protestors, and announced the beginning
of a tiered national strike in the public sector.

I don’t know whether a national strike would be of any good in a country that
is somewhat paralyzed. What strikes me is that Guaido has been accused of
leading a coup attempt, even when the protests are still on the street. What is
Nicolas Maduro afraid of? What agreement might the two parties agreed on?

The former SEBIN director hasn’t fled his duties, in fact he seems to be the
least dishonest in this situation, in spite of me never liking or trusting the
military; but here you can read what he had to say.

This is an interview with Algerian student activist Yani Aïdali, originally
published in our French sister publication Révolution Permanente.

Yani Aïdali, who studies archeology at the University of Algier 2, is both
a militant of the Socialist Workers Party in Algeria (part of the same
international organization as the French New Anticapitalist Party, or NPA)
and one of the leaders of the massive movement in Algiers. He says the
youth are not ready to go back home. They have taken down Prime Minister
Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and they want to keep going.

The phrase “It’s all about the Benjamins” had a huge pop culture footprint well
before Omar used it; the official video for the song of that title has well
over 2 million views:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c58ppLPJcQ

This is why the attempt to smear Omar on the basis of her use of this phrase
was so ridiculous to anyone familiar with it; it’s just not credible unless you
think any talk of the influence of money in politics in relation to Israel is
anti-semitic (which I trust we all recognize as an absurd position). It was
probably the most easily debunked of the various comments she made that were
invoked as evidence of anti-semitism.

I don’t think there’s any reason to suppose the bank’s use of the phrase was
influenced one way or another by the Omar accusations. In fact it’s entirely
possible the slogan was chosen before the whole thing blew up.

It’s time for journalists to really make the news.

The current state of digital media in the US is, in a word, tumultuous.
It’s never been what anyone would call stable, really, and has always
been as exploitative as one might expect from an industry beholden to
both capitalism and the whims of billionaires—but for a while there, it
looked as though the Vices and Buzzfeeds of the world would at least be
lucrative. Digital media was going to revolutionize the news, they said;
it was going to change everything. And it did, for some people—the
bosses, CEOs, and founders. Unfortunately for them (and far more
unfortunately for all the people they’d been underpaying and overworking
from the jump), a genuinely sustainable business model remains digital
media’s Moby Dick. Chasing ad dollars through a maze of Facebook boosts
and Google ad buys became too difficult, so when older media capitalists
like Rupert Murdoch and Disney came calling, the top brass betrayed
their millennial image by actually picking up the phone.

(Stephen F. Cohen, Roger Annis et al believe that Obama fomented a New
Cold War against Putin, with the first battle focused on the removal of
Yanukovych in Ukraine. But Joe Biden was bent on helping out his son who
was making $50,000 a month on the board of a gas company aligned with
the Yanukovych wing of the oligarchy. Ukraine has NEVER been about
ideology. It is about dirty money, not that much different from a
"Sopranos" episode on HBO.)

NY Times, May 2, 2019
Biden Faces Conflict of Interest Questions That Are Being Promoted by
Trump and Allies

By Kenneth P. Vogel and Iuliia Mendel

WASHINGTON — It was a foreign policy role Joseph R. Biden Jr.
enthusiastically embraced during his vice presidency: browbeating
Ukraine’s notoriously corrupt government to clean up its act. And one of
his most memorable performances came on a trip to Kiev in March 2016,
when he threatened to withhold $1 billion in United States loan
guarantees if Ukraine’s leaders did not dismiss the country’s top
prosecutor, who had been accused of turning a blind eye to corruption in
his own office and among the political elite.

The pressure campaign worked. The prosecutor general, long a target of
criticism from other Western nations and international lenders, was soon
voted out by the Ukrainian Parliament.

Among those who had a stake in the outcome was Hunter Biden, Mr. Biden’s
younger son, who at the time was on the board of an energy company owned
by a Ukrainian oligarch who had been in the sights of the fired
prosecutor general.

Hunter Biden was a Yale-educated lawyer who had served on the boards of
Amtrak and a number of nonprofit organizations and think tanks, but
lacked any experience in Ukraine and just months earlier had been
discharged from the Navy Reserve after testing positive for cocaine. He
would be paid as much as $50,000 per month in some months for his work
for the company, Burisma Holdings.

The broad outlines of how the Bidens’ roles intersected in Ukraine have
been known for some time. The former vice president’s campaign said that
he had always acted to carry out United States policy without regard to
any activities of his son, that he had never discussed the matter with
Hunter Biden and that he learned of his son’s role with the Ukrainian
energy company from news reports.

But new details about Hunter Biden’s involvement, and a decision this
year by the current Ukrainian prosecutor general to reverse himself and
reopen an investigation into Burisma, have pushed the issue back into
the spotlight just as the senior Mr. Biden is beginning his 2020
presidential campaign.

They show how Hunter Biden and his American business partners were part
of a broad effort by Burisma to bring in well-connected Democrats during
a period when the company was facing investigations backed not just by
domestic Ukrainian forces but by officials in the Obama administration.
Hunter Biden’s work for Burisma prompted concerns among State Department
officials at the time that the connection could complicate Vice
President Biden’s diplomacy in Ukraine, former officials said.

“I have had no role whatsoever in relation to any investigation of
Burisma, or any of its officers,” Hunter Biden said Wednesday in a
statement. “I explicitly limited my role to focus on corporate
governance best practices to facilitate Burisma’s desire to expand
globally.”

Hunter Biden, who left Burisma’s board last month, was one of many
politically prominent Americans of both major parties who made money in
Ukraine over the last decade. In several cases — most notably that of
Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman — that
business came under criminal investigation that exposed a seedy side of
the lucrative Western consulting industry in Ukraine.

Mr. Zlochevsky had served in the government of the former Ukrainian
president Viktor F. Yanukovych.

He fled the country not long after the collapse of Mr. Yanukovych’s
government in 2014, and the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office opened
multiple investigations into him and his businesses.

Mr. Shokin’s office had oversight of investigations into Mr. Zlochevsky
and his businesses, including Burisma.

Some in the Obama administration supported the investigations, but
worried Mr. Shokin was not pursuing them. He was accused of turning a
blind eye to corruption in his office and among the political elite.

In March 2016, Mr. Biden issued an ultimatum to Ukraine’s Parliament to
dismiss Mr. Shokin, or the United States would withhold $1 billion in
loan guarantees. Mr. Shokin was voted out by Parliament.

AngloArabia: Why Gulf Wealth Matters to Britain by David Wearing
Polity, 275 pp, £15.99, September 2018, ISBN 978 1 5095 3203 2

It is a cliché that the United States and Britain are obsessed with
Middle East oil, but the reason for the obsession is often misdiagnosed.
Anglo-American interest in the enormous hydrocarbon reserves of the
Persian Gulf does not derive from a need to fuel Western consumption.
Britain used to import considerable quantities of Saudi oil, but
currently gets most of what it needs from the North Sea and hasn’t
imported much from the Gulf since the 1980s; Saudi oil currently
represents around 3 per cent of UK imports. The US has never imported
more than a token amount from the Gulf and for much of the postwar
period has been a net oil exporter. Anglo-American involvement in the
Middle East has always been principally about the strategic advantage
gained from controlling Persian Gulf hydrocarbons, not Western oil
needs. In 1945, Gordon Merriam, the head of the State Department’s Near
Eastern Affairs division, made this clear: the Saudi oilfields, he said,
were first and foremost ‘a stupendous source of strategic power’. The
assistant secretary of state, Adolf Berle, sketched out what remains US
strategy: the US and Britain would provide Saudi Arabia and other key
Gulf monarchies with ‘sufficient military supplies to preserve internal
security’ and ensure that they were permanently guarded by Western navies.

Harper's allows you to read one free article a month. I recommend this
one from August 2018 that I read yesterday. It is about the impact of
climate change and Saddam Hussein's idiotic marsh-clearing policy in
Basra on the Mandanis, a sect that uses baptism rituals. There is little
doubt that Iraq and Syria will eventually be destroyed by inexorable
changes that Baathist rule bequeathed.

(Isn't this a contradiction in terms?)

Its goal is to remake our economic system — and the Democratic Party.

Ways of Hearing began life as a podcast series on Radiotopia, but
Krukowski, following Berger, always meant to publish it as a book as
well. “It’s my intuition that you get all these different things from a
page than you do from your ears, and I wanted to do both,” he said over
the phone from his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A slim volume with
eye-catching illustrations, Ways of Hearing invites readers to consider
how the shift from analog to digital distribution has changed our
relationships to music and to one another. It’s an accessible critique
of capitalism disguised as a meditation on playback technology, a dip
into critical theory for those who covet vinyl crackles and tape hiss
but can’t quite put their finger on why.

(Journalism's adjuncts.)

Journalism's dependence on part-time freelancers has been bad for the
industry—not to mention writers like me.

As do I. Marxmail is a tremendous resource. It is simply amazing that it has
survived for two decades.
