Subject: ADVISORY: Local Farmer, Teacher to Begin Jail Sentence for I.C.E.
Protest

PRESS ADVISORY

Media contact: Arely Diaz, cont...@thefangcollective.org, 201-665-9358

Local Farmer, Teacher to Begin Jail Sentence for I.C.E. Protest

WHO: Local community members, faith leaders and members of The FANG
Collective. For the past year The FANG Collective has been organizing to
end the 287(g) agreement between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
and the Bristol County Sheriff's Department. This agreement allows for
Sheriffs to be able to carry out the duties of ICE officers and detain
people on immigration charges.

WHAT: Last August four people with The FANG Collective were arrested at the
Bristol County House Corrections after peacefully blocking the entrances to
the prison. The action was carried out in solidarity with ICE detainees who
were on hunger strike to protest the dire conditions at the facility.
Bristol County Sheriff's reacted to the action with violence, resulting in
two demonstrators receiving traumatic brain injuries.

Holly, one of the four people arrested at the action has been sentenced to
ten days in jail and is set to begin the sentence on Tuesday, June 4th.
This case marks one of the first times that a person has been sentenced to
jail time for an ICE related protest. This comes at a time when free speech
and protest are becoming highly criminalized under the Trump
administration.

Community members will gather outside of the New Bedford District Court at
8:45am to show their support for Holly, before heading into the Court at
9am.

WHERE: New Bedford District Court, 75 North 6th Street, New Bedford MA

WHEN: Tuesday, June 4th 8:45am

The hostility to lesbian rights is palpable. But I've found that it is a
waste of time berating men who think lesbians should shut up, do what
they're told (by men and get to the back of the bus.

It is, however, weird that in the 21st century misogyny and lesbophobia
have become respectable in some parts of the left. Dismissing a veteran
lesbian, trade union and socialist activist like Ann Menasche really is a
"sick and repugnant obsession" but I have no interest in wasting time on
men who have these attitudes to lesbians.

Happily, the vast bulk of the feedback we have had on Ann's article is
positive; people especially appreciated the historical info on the role of
lesbians, something the lesbophobes simply ignored.

Go the lesbians!

(Great op-ed. Too bad its message is undermined by him running as a
Democrat.)

NY Times Op-Ed, June 2, 2019
Bernie Sanders: I Know Where I Came From. Does President Trump?
By Bernie Sanders

Mr. Sanders is a senator from Vermont and a Democratic candidate for
president.

My father came to this country from Poland at the age of 17 with barely
a nickel in his pocket. I spent my first 18 years, before I left home
for college, in a three-and-a-half-room, rent-controlled apartment in
Brooklyn. My mother’s dream was to own her own home, but we never came
close. My father’s salary as a paint salesman paid for basic
necessities, but never much more.

As a young man I learned the impact that lack of money had on family
life. Every major household purchase was accompanied by arguments
between my parents.

I remember being yelled at for going to the wrong store for groceries
and paying more than I should have. I’ve never forgotten the incredible
stress of not having much money, a reality that millions of American
families experience today.

We are the wealthiest nation in the history of the world and, according
to President Trump, the economy is “booming.” Yet most Americans have
little or no savings and live paycheck to paycheck.

Today our rate of childhood poverty is among the highest of any
developed country in the world, millions of workers are forced to work
two or three jobs just to survive, hundreds of thousands of bright young
people cannot afford to go to college, millions more owe outrageous
levels of student debt, and half a million people are homeless on any
given night. Over 80 million Americans have inadequate health insurance
or spent part or all of last year without any insurance, and one out of
five cannot afford the prescription drugs they need.

While wages in the United States have been stagnant for over 40 years,
we have more income and wealth inequality than at any time since the 1920s.

Today, the wealthiest three families in the country own more wealth than
the bottom half of the American people and the top 1 percent owns more
wealth than the bottom 90 percent. Millions of workers earn starvation
wages even as nearly half of all new income is going to the top 1 percent.

I am running for president because we must defeat Donald Trump, the most
dangerous president in the modern history of our country. But, if we are
to defeat Mr. Trump, we must do more than focus on his personality and
reactionary policies.

We must understand that unfettered capitalism and the greed of corporate
America are destroying the moral and economic fabric of this country,
deepening the very anxieties that Mr. Trump appealed to in 2016. The
simple truth is that big money interests are out of control, and we need
a president who will stand up to them.

Wall Street, after driving the United States into the worst economic
downturn since the 1930s, now makes tens of billions in profits while
forcing working-class Americans to pay usurious interest rates on their
credit card debt. The top 10 American drug companies, repeatedly
investigated for price fixing and other potentially illegal actions,
made nearly $70 billion in profits last year, even as Americans paid the
most per capita among developed nations for their prescription medicine.

Top executives in the fossil fuel industry spend hundreds of millions on
campaign contributions to elect candidates who represent the rich and
the powerful, while denying the reality of climate change.

Major corporations like Amazon, Netflix, General Motors and dozens of
others make huge profits, but don’t pay federal income taxes because of
a rigged tax system they lobbied to create.

Back in 1944, in his State of the Union speech, President Franklin
Delano Roosevelt reminded the nation that economic security is a human
right, and that people cannot be truly free if they have to struggle
every day for their basic needs. I agree.

We must change the current culture of unfettered capitalism in which
billionaires have control over our economic and political life. We need
to revitalize American democracy and create a government and economy
that works for all.

Yes, the government should guarantee a decent paying job for all
Americans and universal health care through a single-payer system. Yes,
we should raise the minimum wage to a living wage of $15 an hour, make
it easier for workers to join unions, provide free tuition to public
colleges and substantially lower student debt. Yes, we should wean
ourselves off of fossil fuels, reform a racist criminal justice system
and enact comprehensive immigration

The following letter has been signed by a few workers in the US. I believe
it will be translated into farsi and circulated inside Iran:

"As workers here, we know we have nothing in common with the brutal
policies – both domestic and international – of the government here. This
includes the economic sanctions imposed by the Trump administration against
the Iranian people. We know that it is you, the workers and the poor, who
are suffering the most from these sanctions, and we oppose them totally. We
are horrified that the Trump administration’s actions could actually lead
to a war. We know that in such a war it will be the workers who will pay
the price – first of all our fellow workers in Iran, but also we workers in
the United States.

"We are aware of the struggles of workers in Iran, including workers’
strikes and other struggles against different forms of oppression. Here in
the United States, we have similar struggles – increasing numbers of
strikes, struggles of women for their rights, struggles against racism and
against homophobia and against oppression of immigrant people. It is our
common struggles that bind us – the workers of the world – together."

Read entire letter here and please help circulate:

The Lone Star State’s economic ties to Israel are expanding beyond
fossil fuels.

“What drives the Texas economy is exactly where Israel innovates the
most: energy efficiency, water conservation and treatment, cyber
security, health care innovation,” said Toba Hellerstein, CEO of the
Texas-Israel Alliance.

Israel and Texas have also collaborated on the military-industrial
complex. In 2014, Elbit Systems of America, the Texas-based subsidiary
of Israeli company Elbit, landed a $145 million contract to build
surveillance towers along the Arizona-Mexico border. The Fort Worth
factory of Lockheed Martin, the American defense giant, built the
stealth F-35 fighter jets that Israel first bought in 2010 for $2.75
billion.

What has changed? Less than you would think, more than you would wish.

The current Westminster polling, which gives Liberals and the Brexit

Sudanese military and militia forces are attacking the sit-in outside the Army
Command in Khartoum, where thousands of protesters have gathered since 6 April
to demand a peaceful transition to civilian rule, the Sudanese Professionals
Association said in a statement this morning, killing and injuring many and
setting tents on fire. The attack follows a general strike on 28 and 29 May

after the Transitional Military Council refused to concede protesters’ call
for a new sovereignty council composed of a majority of civilian members.

Solidarity is crucial – what you do in the next few hours will make a
difference.

Take action now:

Email, fax or call the Sudanese Embassy. [Go here
for contact details for the Sudanese
embassy in London] today, condemning the attacks on peaceful protesters and
demanding that the Transitional Military Council withdraws all troops and
militia forces from the Khartoum sit-in and other protest sites.
Contact the foreign ministry of your government and your local member of
parliament. Urge them to issue a statement condemning attacks on protesters and
stating that they will hold Generals Burhan and Dagalo of the Transitional
Military Council responsible for deaths and injuries to civilians. Call on your
government to stop all forms of cooperation with the TMC until those
responsible for killing and injuring protesters are brought to justice.
Circulate this appeal to your trade union branch or campaign
Read and share our background briefing on the armed men who threaten Sudan’s
peaceful revolution

Statement from the Foreign Relations Committee of the Sudanese Professionals
Association

3 June 2019

In the early hours of today, Rapid Support Forces backed by security forces and
Police stormed the sit-in area in front of the headquarters of the Sudanese
army in the capital Khartoum. Fire bullets were used excessively and injured
several unarmed citizens; uncounted numbers of them are dead. The raiding
forces burned the tents in the sit-in area and used excessive physical force
against the protestors. The raid and attacks against civilians are still
ongoing in an attempt to break and disperse the peaceful sit-in

We consider this violation a criminal offence against the Sudanese people, and
a total reversion to the old regime’s tactics and policies.

The Sudanese revolution will continue and shall prevail.

I don't think the concern this article raises can be automatically written
of as trans-phobic or repugnant. There is an issue here that needs to be
addressed.

The article claims, among other things, that lesbian women are being
subjected to pressure to have sex with people who claim to be lesbian
women, but who have male genitals. I don't know to what extent this is
happening but unless I learn otherwise I would take that allegation in good
faith. We can't just declare it a fiction. If it isn't happening, and if
women are not in fact finding that people with male genitals but who
identify as women are entering women's spaces (changing areas etc), then
perhaps there is no issue. But the fear seems real and needs to be
addressed.

None of this need in any way belittle the struggle of trans people, who are
clearly amongst the most viciously persecuted minorities in our
communities. It just means there is a conflict of interests that needs to
be resolved in a comradely manner to the benefit of all. If I were a
lesbian woman and felt that spaces that previously seemed safe were now the
equal preserve of people who are physically male but declare that they feel
female, that would be a concern to me. It wouldn't make me trans-phobic. It
would make me concerned about what was happening or might happen.

I certainly don't find the suggestion that lesbians are suddenly being
written out of history especially convincing but I'm not in the US. There
seems to be a strange contradiction between the rise of implementation of
trans ideology (as claimed in the article) and a repression of lesbians
coming about through the resurgence of right wing Christian fundamentalism,
Trumpism etc (also claimed by the article). I can't imagine a world where
the US evangelical right and the political demographic that elevated Trump
to the presidency would simultaneously condemn lesbianism and embrace trans
ideology. That link seems tenuous to me.

I don't think though that Menasche can be simply written off as a
"repugnant" "transphobe". Such allegations require actual evidence and
rational accurate rebuttal of her arguments.
