No idea who the author might be -- just thought comrades might find it
well-said and compassionate, even with its appropriately bitter many-clause
sentences. To invoke the dialectical idea of unity in opposition: by
contradiction, the consciousness of this author -- to call out and reject
the depressing and alienated dominant culture of contemporary capitalism --
shows the hope of our moment.

===

In The Shock Doctrine, Naomi Klein proposed that this is part of the great
neoliberal experiment; the wealthiest echelons are attempting to see if
society can operate merely from the top 1%'s consumption/spending. We
already see the consequences - entire regions of America (& across the
technoindustrial West) have become de-facto "sacrifice zones", not just
towns like Flint; the UN considers entire swaths of the South to have
slipped to a "third world" quality of life - no clean drinking water,
absent or rudimentary plumbing, endemic disease. The residents of these
modern-day ghettos find themselves in a situation that reveals the
gut-wrenching horror of modernity - how easily, in this society, you are
not only abandoned, but forgotten, erased from public view and
consciousness with the ever-present Pollyanaism, narcissism and
exceptionalism espoused by an increasingly frenetic, myopic popular
culture. This, too, has been normalized.

Combine that picture with an incredibly powerful
propaganda/distraction/indoctrination apparatus, a culture that serves as
an alienating panoptic of all-encompassing control, surveillance and
normalization, and you get our present day schizophrenia - a nation, a
world of individuals who are progressively being robbed of their livelihood
and future - but fully believe that the men and women who are killing them,
their families, their friends - have their best interests in mind, and with
religious fervor, to boot. They do not rise up, do not resist; an
immunological response never forms to the actual, extrinsic toxin. No, they
blame themselves as their immediate world grows more isolating, more
unaffordable, more terrifying, and pick up the heroin syringe - or the
semi-automatic, and head to a crowded place. Because no contextual cause
can be identified easily, because a thick shroud of propaganda obfuscates
rising above the violence of alienation, they inevitably sink into the
lonely, narcissized autopropaganda chamber of the mind, the increasingly
volatilized "ego tunnel" within - as such, the immunological response they
have is to themselves - modern day epidemiology, from opiate abuse to mass
shootings - represent a terminal autoimmune disease within the body of
civilization.

Most "resistance" to this system has taken the shape of sightless
self-destruction; perhaps it's the good old story of "monkey see monkey do"
- we're raised in a society that teaches us only to manipulate, scheme,
destroy, and consume, are never taught compassion or empathy, never find
greater context for our lives within the fiercely competitive,
materialistic "rat race" that begins in childhood - and we look out at the
world it has created and find a lonely, dreadfully boring simulacra of
reality, one we are told is becoming existentially more uncertain, and
despite the illusionary stability of our civilization's various forms, we
feel the tremors of coming catastrophe, we feel fear - and know no other
way to face this fear than through the lenses we were taught; thus we meet
it on the hallowed fields of brimstone with the very same archaic tools of
destruction and despair that ushered in this dark timeline in the first
place - as we run from our fear of death, we end up not only becoming it,
but recreating the world in its image.

In what practically amounts to self-plagiarism, Lars Lih has written now
what seems like the tenth article elevating Karl Kautsky’s reputation to
heights not seen since the early 20th century before it was permanently
damaged by his ideological scabbing on the Russian Revolution. Jacobin,
the go-to place for neo-Kautskyism, has just published Lih’s “Karl
Kautsky as Architect of the October Revolution”, which is meant as a
corrective to his acolyte Eric Blanc’s attempt to consign Bolshevik-type
revolutions to the ashbin of history. Ironically, Lih views October 1917
as a vindication of Kautsky’s writings while his disciple Blanc views
those same writings as a disinfectant against the unreconstructed
Leninism that stubbornly refuses to accept Bernie Sanders as the
greatest revolutionary since Eugene V. Debs. In essence, Kautsky serves
as a Rorschach test for the two Jacobin authors. Lih sees the image
resembling Lenin and Blanc sees it as the anti-Lenin. Of course, before
Blanc became so gung-ho on Democratic Party politics, his take might
have been closer to Lih’s but why expect him to be consistent? After
all, consistency is the hobgoblin of foolish minds.

NY Times, July 1, 2019
‘Third Man’ in Skripal Attack Was Link to Moscow, Investigative Group Says
By Ellen Barry

A senior Russian military intelligence officer coordinated the
nerve-agent attack on Sergei V. Skripal, a former spy, from a hotel in
the heart of London, making repeated phone calls to an unregistered,
prepaid Russian number, the investigative group Bellingcat says.

The report sheds more light on a third figure in an attack that threw
British and Russian relations into a tailspin — each expelled diplomats
from the other country — and led to the fatal poisoning of a British
woman after the discarded Novichok nerve agent was found in a perfume
bottle in the trash.

Bellingcat said it had traced phone calls made by the officer, who was
identified as Denis Sergeyev but who traveled under the name Sergei
Fedotov. It obtained his metadata from an employee of a Russian mobile
operator, who says that the leak did not breach privacy laws because
Sergei Fedotov, the individual to whom the number is registered, does
not exist.

Moscow has long denied any involvement in the attack on Mr. Skripal, who
was living in the English city of Salisbury after being released from a
Russian prison in a spy swap. He and his daughter, Yulia Skripal,
survived the poisoning attempt, and now remain in an undisclosed location.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia insisted in an interview published
on Friday by The Financial Times that Russia had not tried to poison Mr.
Skripal, arguing that he had already served a sentence in a Russian
prison for assisting British intelligence. He did, however, speak with
open contempt for traitors in general.

“Treason is the gravest crime possible, and traitors must be punished,”
he said, adding, “I am not saying that the Salisbury incident is the way
to do it. Not at all. But traitors must be punished.”

British officials identified Mr. Skripal’s attackers as colonels in
Russia’s military intelligence service, the G.R.U., who were caught
numerous times on video surveillance footage near Mr. Skripal’s home,
where traces of the nerve agent was found and which sickened a local
police officer.

Bellingcat later revealed their true names as Anatoly V. Chepiga and
Aleksandr E. Mishkin. But until now, few details about the “third man”
believed to accompanied the team to London have been reported.

The group’s findings suggest that the mission was put together hurriedly.

Mr. Sergeyev, it said, received confirmation that he would have to fly
to London at 6 p.m. on March 1, just three days before the poisoning,
and then called travel agencies, searching for last-minute flights from
Moscow to London. He received a booking confirmation just after 8 p.m.,
Bellingcat reports, and then searched to see whether he would need a new
data plan.

He arrived at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow at 6 a.m. the following
day, and while he waited for his flight to depart — it was delayed by
two hours — he downloaded several large data files and sent messages
over the messaging applications Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber and Facebook
Messenger. Before the flight left, he spoke twice to a Russian phone
number belonging to a prepaid SIM card with no registered owner.

During the next three days, he would speak 11 times to someone over the
unregistered Russian number, and no one else, Bellingcat reported.

Arriving in London, he checked into a hotel near Paddington Station and
spent the next two days there, communicating via encrypted messaging
apps and using 3G and 4G connections, Bellingcat said. He left only
once, on March 3, during which, phone records reveal, he was near the
Thames embankment — a short walk from the railway station where Mr.
Skripal’s two attackers, Mr. Chepiga and Mr. Mishkin, would leave about
50 minutes later.

On the day of the poisoning, Mr. Sergeyev received a call from the
unregistered Russian number around 9 a.m., and then sent a large data
file — possibly a photo — an hour later, just as Mr. Chepiga and Mr.
Mishkin headed to Salisbury. He then began his journey home to Moscow.

Bellingcat noted that Mr. Sergeyev’s phone signals in Moscow typically
showed him leaving his home for one of two G.R.U. campuses, its
headquarters and its training academy.

The patterns of use during the Skripal operation, it said, also suggest
a methodology used in such operations, in which a senior coordinating
officer communicates with Moscow, while agents on the ground — in this
case, Mr. Chepiga and Mr. Mishkin — receive no instructions.

I agree with Mark Lause on some things but disagree on others.

The DNC claims that they selected who is on which day by chance. I think
that if things had been arranged intentionally there would at least have
been rumors of complaints by one candidate or another. In any case, if the
DNC were trying to protect Biden, one could just as easily have said that
they'd have kept Harris off the stage with him.

I think that some of the kingmakers must be starting to have second
thoughts about Biden. If I were them, I'd be looking at Harris or Buttegieg
right now. And, in fact, Harris has gotten a significant bump in the first
polls to come out post-debate.

As far as the role of the kingmakers and Biden: It's not purely a matter of
their manipulation. Polls show that by a 2-1 margin, the number one concern
of Democratic voters is which candidate stands the best chance of defeating
Trump. I know all the arguments of Sanders that a turn to the left will
bring in a whole new layer of voters - enough to sweep Trump out - but I
think most Democratic Party voters are not convinced and neither am I.

As far as Sanders defense of "socialism", we should remember how the entire
issue arose in the first place. Scores of years ago, Sanders had called
himself a socialist. Then he completely dropped the term. In the 2016
campaign, it was the capitalist media which kept on raising the issue with
him. This was an attempt to undermine him by a subtle kind of red baiting,
and it was one of the greatest miscalculations of recent time. Sanders did
not "popularize" socialism. Polls showed that it was becoming increasingly
popular, especially among younger people, as far back as 2014. Possibly
even earlier.

Then DSA burst on the scene. In some elections, they helped mobilize a base
of members to campaign for some candidates who were DSA members. So this
further brought into prominence "democratic socialism". This has become the
term for the liberal wing of the Democrats now - the old Hubert Humphrey
wing. It's made possible by the fact that the Cold War is barely a distant
memory for millions today. But it's left Sanders in a bind. He cannot
disassociate himself from "democratic socialism". Neither the capitalist
media nor his own wing of the Democratic Party will allow him to. Thus is
defense of the term.

Even though German-Dutch naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian has been dead
for over 300 years, she is currently having a moment in popular crafting
culture and in children’s literature. Merian is featured on Etsy; she is
frequently pinned on Pinterest; and you can read about her curiosity for
butterflies and caterpillars in many books for children—several of which
refer to her as “a girl.” Less well known in popular culture, however,
is Merian’s status as an enslaver; her dependence on enslaved indigenous
and African cultivators for her study of plants and insects in Surinam;
and her reference to enslaved women’s reliance on infanticide and
abortion. These popular depictions of Merian sidestep the politics of
sexual reproduction under colonialism and slavery and ignore the context
in which Merian undertook her research. Instead, Merian is renown within
a softer, more palatable narrative as a woman scientist who created
beautifully illustrated books.

I thought there were several surprises in the debate. My initial response
was that of the professional pundits, though for different reasons: the
women did superbly on many levels. Despite polls showing virtually all of
the leading Democratic contenders defeating Trump, the DNC and the media
has presented Biden as the only candidate that can beat Trump.

The decision to isolate Warren from the other leading contenders by putting
her in the first group was a transparent attempt to insulate Biden. In
terms of rhetoric, Warren is fundamentally indistinguishable from Sanders.
People do need to remember that she described herself as a Republican as
late as 1996, explaining this by citing the party's friendlier embrace of
"the markets." So every time I hear her, I have to wonder how serious she
is after the years of Reagan-Gingrich "supply side" "trickle-down" voodoo.

Sanders' use of "socialism" weighs nothing--and probably a bit against
him. Wanting to spend time debating the meaning of a word in the present
circumstances indicates a real failure to understand those circumstances.
Worse, I think his making an issue of the term is a purely electoral stroke
on his part to recover the kind of support it garnered him four years ago.
Still worse, his version of "socialism" is--as Howie Hawkins just reminded
us all--a rewarmed liberalism.

But back to the debate . . . despite that stacking of the deck in favor of
Biden hardly kept the other participants did a very decent job of mopping
the floor with him, albeit it in short sweeps. Harris' exposure of his
Thurmond-esque appreciation of states' rights on busing was brilliantly
done, for which the media and commentators have made an issue of her lack
of clarify over health care.

I was particularly impressed with Bennet's quick cut to the core commentary
on Biden's BS about bipartisan "compromise" with McConnell--a compromise
that amounted to the kind of surrender we're used to seeing by the "New
Democrats."

In the end, it seems clear that the DNC, MSNBC, etc. are hell-bound to
foist Biden on the party's base . . . because they don't really have any
other viable alternative to the candidates who are trying to channel an
angry and thoughtful electorate. At least, they don't really have one
yet. And, as a candidate, Biden is as flawed in his way as Trump or was
Clinton.

This means that all the Sturm und Drang by the more "progressive"
candidates will boil down to supporting Biden (or, if necessary, a stand-in
for Biden) as a "lesser evil."

Cheers,
Mark L.

long-lasting agreement reached. And that’s because this is a ‘cold war’
between a relatively declining economic power in the US and a new and
dangerous rival for economic supremacy, China. Just like the last ‘cold
war’ between the US and the USSR, it could last a generation or more
before a winner emerges – and the odds are against the US this time, the
longer the cold war lasts.
