'In March 1965, after a two-month trip abroad, Che Guevara was greeted at
Havana Airport by Fidel Castro. He was not seen in public again until his
corpse was exhibited in Bolivia in October 1967.

'Guevara’s exploits in Bolivia hit the headlines at the time and have been
relatively well-recorded, in his own published diaries and various
biographies and other works. His April-November 1965 involvement in the
Congo, however, has remained obscure. . .'

Over the past month, I watched seasons one and two of “Shtisel”, an
Israeli soap opera (for the last of a better term) about haredi
(ultra-orthodox) Jews living in Jerusalem. It has little to do with
Israeli politics or society since the characters disdain the Zionist
project entirely. In season one, Rabbi Shulem Shtisel, the bullheaded
patriarch of the Shtisel clan, decides to prevent the young students at
the yeshiva where he teaches from watching the air show of the Israeli
air force to their dismay. His son Akiva, who teaches there as well,
overrules his father and allows the kids to watch the planes through the
yeshiva windows. This should not be interpreted as his openness to
Zionism, only his “softness” to the kids. He has zero interest in
politics. All his energy is focused on drawing and painting, “hobbies”
disdained upon in the Haredi world. The conflict between father and son
provide most of the tension in this stellar drama. On a personal level,
you are drawn into their test of wills but on a larger canvas, this is
the central drama of the ultra-orthodox everywhere in the world, one
between the closed, ritualistic and suffocating social norms and the
yearning of young orthodox Jews to taste the forbidden pleasures of the
outside world.

I only mention the outset of each movement in each month. The Hong Kong
protests started before October. Similar with different reactionary events
such as Bolsonaro taking office.

If people are interested I'm happy to post what I've got so far for each
month of this year. Maybe others would have other events I am unaware of or
have forgotten.

‘Distancing to Protect’ (D2P): How a policy of dissociation helped the
US prevent the overthrow of Arab Spring regimes

by Omar Sabbour

The 2011 Arab Spring uprisings represented a watershed in Middle Eastern
history. After long being seen as a region resistant to democratisation,
the uprisings seemed to rebuke the culturalist and orientalist analyses
that argued that the populations of the region were intrinsically prone
to authoritarianism and uninterested in and unsuited to democratic
governance. After a brief period where these analyses were widely argued
to have been disproved, the destructive aftermaths of the uprisings in
the years since - from the wars in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen, to the
return of authoritarianism in Egypt - has seen a resurgence of
narratives that cite the turmoil as vindication for theories that the
region is 'exceptional' in its failure to democratise.

Building on the works of Eva Bellin and Ian Lustick, this paper argues
that the failure of the post-Arab Spring transitions could be put down
to a pattern of consistent foreign intervention, which have tipped the
scales in favour of the ancien regimes and the emergence of 'new-old'
authoritarianisms. In particular, this paper suggests that the US-led
Western response to the post Arab-Spring conflicts was not one of
'Responsibility to Protect' (R2P) to protect civilians, but Distancing
(or Dissociation) to Protect (D2P) the regimes themselves.

Latin America and the global reactionary wave

http://www.internationalviewpoint.org/spip.php?article6256

The reality of the current turn to the right in Latin America is as evident as
its instability. Do not be fooled: this is not about any impasse or “hegemonic
draw”. The relationship of forces is worse than in the previous cycle, as is
evident in the emergence of an authoritarian phenomenon in Brazil, the
“moderate” turn of Kirchnerismo, the permanent coup threats in Venezuela or the
risks of right-wing victories in Bolivia and Uruguay. However, the shift to the
right in Latin America law is based on a still fluctuating dynamic with some
palpable ripostes: the victory of AMLO and the fall of the old regime in
Mexico, the overwhelming electoral defeat of Macri in Argentina, the bogging
down of imperialism and the right in Venezuela , the vitality of some social
movements (especially the feminist movement, but also the workers’ movement in
some countries). In Brazil the result is also ambiguous at the moment:
Bolsonaro is advancing significantly with his major reforms (pensions, tax),
but subject to increasing discredit, instability and an emerging fightback from
the mass movement. We are not seeing a generalized “Bolsonorization” of the
region, the turn to the right is advancing but on unstable ground and we have
not yet seen a strategic defeat of the popular classes.

In preparation for my 2020 Workers Hella Revolutionary calendar, I've been
keeping track of events of revolution and counter revolution so far this
year. I noticed that in the start of this year, most (but not all) events
were part of the process of counter revolution. In the last few months this
has reversed. Here's what I have for October:
10/2: Protests begin in Ecuador against neoliberal reforms
10/4 popular protests start in Iraq
10/6: US troops ordered to withdraw from NE Syria
10/7 school student protests in Chile against transit fare hikes
10/9: Turkey begins invasion of NE Syria
10/12: Biggest storm in decades, Typhoon Hagibis, hits Japan; over 7
million urged to evacuate.
10/8: Ecuador government flees capital of Quito moves to Guayaquil
10/16: Hundreds of thousands of government workers stay at home in
Zimbabwe; hundreds of thousands of Lebanese across party and sectarian
lines protest against government; 25,000 teachers and other education
workers in Chicago go on strike
1018: Chile government forced to call state of emergency due to widespread
protests

And the month isn't close to over yet.

[Marxism] Erdogan says he wants nuclear weapons - New York Times

Erdogan says he wants nuclear weapons
David E. Sanger and William J. Broad - The New York Times - Sunday,
October 20, 2019

WASHINGTON — Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, wants more than
control over a wide swath of Syria along his country’s border. He says
he wants the Bomb.
In the weeks leading up to his order to launch the military across the
border to clear Kurdish areas, Mr. Erdogan made no secret of his larger
ambition. “Some countries have missiles with nuclear warheads,” he told
a meeting of his governing party in September. But the West insists “we
can’t have them,” he said. “This, I cannot accept.”
With Turkey now in open confrontation with its NATO allies, having
gambled and won a bet that it could conduct a military incursion into
Syria and get away with it, Mr. Erdogan’s threat takes on new meaning.
If the United States could not prevent the Turkish leader from routing
its Kurdish allies, how can it stop him from building a nuclear weapon
or following Iran in gathering the technology to do so?
It was not the first time Mr. Erdogan has spoken about breaking free of
the restrictions on countries that have signed the Nuclear
Nonproliferation Treaty, and no one is quite sure of his true
intentions. The Turkish autocrat is a master of keeping allies and
adversaries off balance, as President Trump discovered in the past two
weeks.
“The Turks have said for years that they will follow what Iran does,”
said John J. Hamre, a former deputy secretary of defense who now runs
the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. “But
this time is different. Erdogan has just facilitated America’s retreat
from the region.”
“Maybe, like the Iranians, he needs to show that he is on the two-yard
line, that he could get a weapon at any moment,” Mr. Hamre said.
If so, he is on his way — with a program more advanced than that of
Saudi Arabia, but well short of what Iran has assembled. But experts say
it is doubtful that Mr. Erdogan could put a weapon together in secret.
And any public move to reach for one would provoke a new crisis: His
country would become the first NATO member to break out of the treaty
and independently arm itself with the ultimate weapon.
Already Turkey has the makings of a bomb program: uranium deposits and
research reactors — and mysterious ties to the nuclear world’s most
famous black marketeer, Abdul Qadeer Khan of Pakistan. It is also
building its first big power reactor to generate electricity with
Russia’s help. That could pose a concern because Mr. Erdogan has not
said how he would handle its nuclear waste, which could provide the fuel
for a weapon. Russia also built Iran’s Bushehr reactor.
Experts said it would take a number of years for Turkey to get to a
weapon, unless Mr. Erdogan bought one. And the risk for Mr. Erdogan
would be considerable.
“Erdogan is playing to an anti-American domestic audience with his
nuclear rhetoric, but is highly unlikely to pursue nuclear weapons,”
said Jessica C. Varnum, an expert on Turkey at Middlebury’s James Martin
Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Monterey, Calif. “There would be
huge economic and reputational costs to Turkey, which would hurt the
pocketbooks of Erdogan’s voters.”

“For Erdogan,” Ms. Varnum said, “that strikes me as a bridge too far.”
There is another element to this ambiguous atomic mix: The presence of
roughly 50 American nuclear weapons, stored on Turkish soil. The United
States had never openly acknowledged their existence, until Wednesday,
when Mr. Trump did exactly that.
Asked about the safety of those weapons, kept in an American-controlled
bunker at Incirlik Air Base, Mr. Trump said, “We’re confident, and we
have a great air base there, a very powerful air base.”
But not everyone is so confident, because the air base belongs to the
Turkish government. If relations with Turkey deteriorated, the American
access to that base is not assured.
Turkey has been a base for American nuclear weapons for more than six
decades. Initially, they were intended to deter the Soviet Union, and
were famously a negotiating chip in defusing the 1962 Cuban Missile
Crisis, when President John F. Kennedy secretly agreed to remove
missiles from Turkey in return for Moscow doing the same in Cuba.
But tactical weapons have remained. Over the years, American officials
have often expressed nervousness about the weapons, which have little to
no strategic use versus Russia now, but have been part of a NATO
strategy to keep regional players in check — and keep Turkey from
feeling the need for a bomb of its own.
When Mr. Erdogan put down an attempted military
