Nixon-era "Huston Plan" was too far-reaching even for J. Edgar Hoover
Government
sought more infiltration of Black political movements than FBI was already
doing 50 years later, censors still hiding "sources and methods" for
tracking Soviet-Chinese roles (and lack thereof) in antiwar movement

She’d expected to gather between 30 and 50 members of her Crown Heights
Chabad community to march against police violence on a Sunday afternoon
in early June. In fact, hundreds of parents, teenagers and young
children showed up bearing signs, including ones that read “Human
decency should be a frum value” and “Orthodox Jews for Black Lives Matter.”

(From 2006)

Earlier in the month I caught a few minutes of “Gone With the Wind,” a
film I had only seen once before in the 1950s with my parents, when I
was about 12 years old or so. I only remembered two things. One was the
long tracking shot of the wounded Confederate soldiers in Atlanta that
was meant to evoke pity. The other was the newly impoverished Scarlett
O’Hara eating radishes plucked from the ground and vowing never to be
poor again. I imagine that in 1957, this scene might have resonated with
my parents who had vivid memories of going without during the Great
Depression. Such is the troubled legacy of a film that can make such
Jewish working liberals and Americans from all backgrounds feel sorry
for slave-owners at the very time the Civil Rights movement was emerging.

This is not good news, including the possible long term effectiveness of a
possible vaccine.

"A pair of studies published this week is shedding light on the duration of
immunity following COVID-19, showing patients lose their IgG antibodies—the
virus-specific, slower-forming antibodies associated with long-term
immunity—within weeks or months after recovery. With COVID-19, most people
who become infected do produce antibodies, and even small amounts can still
neutralize the virus in vitro, according to earlier work. These latest
studies could not determine if a lack of antibodies leaves people at risk
of reinfection"

I guess the implications of the need to "prop up" capitalism is that when
capitalism collapses since the possibility of having the political strength
to create socialism is NIL (maybe that's not true in Europe and elsewhere
but certainly one could make that case about the US) then we are faced with
Rosa Luxembourg's alternative -- BARBARISM --- which many dystopian novels
can describe in excruciating detail.

Louis asks if David Harvey is correct on the need to keep capitalism afloat?
The simple answer is No. Richard Seymour is a great writer and analyst. But he
has a soft spot for Harvey, in imperialism as well, which is completely
unwarranted. They set up a straw man, the immediate collapse of capitalism, and
then say, what would the left do to prevent human catastrophe. How is this an
argument? Struggle against it. Pressure the state however you can. And build up
our own capacities, through collective self-help actions, as are happening
around the world. Yes, let's save a system that is killing us, every damned
day, in every way imaginable. That makes a lot of sense. Shades of that
charlatan, Yanis Varoufakis. I have seen John Smith's criticisms of Harvey. are
these precious, as Seymour says the criticisms of Harvey's recent video are
now? Precious? Give me a break.

Rudy, Ahmed, and Remi join Sam Agarwal, a PhD student at Johns Hopkins
University in sociology, whose research on and fieldwork in Kerala
provide insight into the Indian state’s handling of societal crisis like
the 2018-9 floods and COVID-19. We discuss the left politics of the
CPI(M) and its various rival parties, the Indian political climate, the
feminist movement, the handling and mitigation of climate change, and
what we can learn from a contemporary communist-governed state while
dealing with its limitations.

Engels once said that the way a capitalist city is organized tends to
hide production’s ugliest and most dangerous surplus: poverty. And where
it cannot be hidden, it has to be attacked. Could this help explain why
the state often seems to be at its most violent when the smallest sums
are at stake?
