Steve Horn and I will be presenting at the Left Forum on Saturday, 5/31
at 3:10. Rm 1.66

The New “Great Game”: Inter-Imperialist Rivalry and Cooperation in the
Age of “Resource Wars”

The current scramble for control of hydrocarbon energy, the fuel of
capital accumulation and imperial power, raises the issue of reform or
revolution for the Left. Increasing competition for natural gas and oil
shapes not just the geopolitics of major powers and client states, but
multinational corporations — global energy giants and financial
institutions. The new “Great Game” — energy competition among rivals and
“frenemies” from Europe to China; pipeline politics and the race for
shale gas; the effects on ”imperialized” countries, possible “energy
wars,” and global environmental implications will be examined.

... Just out in the latest Against the Current...

The war brought an end to centuries of dynastic rule by Kaiser, Czar,
Emperor and Sultan in Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East;
set the stage for the eventual demise of the British Empire; and further
relegated France to secondary power status. It finished off the
crumbling “sick man of Europe,” the Ottoman Empire at Constantinople
which had once ruled much of southeast Europe, western Asia and North
Africa. It furthered Japan’s aspiration to become East Asia’s dominant
imperial power...

The war’s devastation created the conditions for Russia’s revolutions in
February and October 1917, and the resultant first attempt to “construct
the socialist order” as Lenin boldly proclaimed to the Congress of
Soviets. Simultaneously it foreshadowed the coming of a new imperial
order as the United States, already established as a powerhouse of
productivity, transformed from being a debtor to a creditor nation set
on its course to eventually replace Britain as capitalism’s reigning
superpower

Wondering if anyone out there can suggest some readings on the role of
Singapore as a center of finance in the global circuits of capital?
Especially interested, in regard to the extraction and flows of gas, oil
and other energy across Asia, and the Pacific.

Thanks,
-Allen

In 1876, a black state senator in South Carolina was hauled off by a train by
a mob. Simon Coker was given the chance to pray before he was murdered. While
kneeling, he was shot in the head.

The assassination was part of a systematic paramilitary campaign by white
supremacists in the post-Civil War South to intimidate and suppress black
voters. One of the leaders present at Coker’s murder became South Carolina’s
governor and a longtime U.S. senator.
 His name was Benjamin Tillman.

Today, 139 years later, at the center of the campus of Clemson University,
 stands an iconic brick building.
 Its name is Tillman Hall.

Hello, Lewis…

I recently switched my e-mail address from alr...@tds.net to
allen.m.r...@gmail.com But now I’m receiving a bunch of separate messages
rather than the listed “digest” that I was receiving previously. How do I
switch over to receive the list or digest form once again? (Can you do that for
me?)

Thanks,
-Allen

[Marxism] The re-emergence of social cleansing in El Salvador

“...Since 2014, Salvadoran human rights activists have been denouncing that
death squads with possible connections with the police have been waging a
campaign of “social cleansing” against gangs and suspected gangs members. These
allegations suggest that the security forces may be reviving an ill-conceived
practice from the country’s past for dealing with political turmoil.

This Central American nation has a long and bitter history related to death
squad practices. During El Salvador twelve-year internal armed conflict
(1980-1992), the country developed a notorious reputation for extra-judicial
killings, torture, disappearances, and paramilitary death squads that killed
tens of thousands of people.

Following the war, a new generation of death squads emerged targeting gangs,
politicians, human rights defenders and judicial officials. The most famous of
these death squads was the Sombra Negra, or Black Shadow, which was active in
the early to mid-1990s but that has resurfaced periodically over the last
decade. The Salvadoran media reported in 2014 on Sombra Negra graffiti
appearing in several communities as well as on the opening of a Sombra
Negraanti-gang web page….”

Looking for suggestions for historical readings on Portugal - the Salazar
regime, the resistance to it, the anti-colonial and national liberation
struggles, and the revolution of 1974.
( Was just in the country for the first time and realized, especially after
visiting the remarkable “Museum of the Resistance” in Lisbon, that I really
don’t much at all about the history, but came away wit the sense that there are
some important lessons there.)

Louis: You wrote "Just as Harry Truman paved the way for McCarthy with his
ban on CP'ers having government jobs, so did Bill Clinton pave the way for
Trump with his abolition of aid to dependent children on welfare….”

Certainly true. The pertinent question for us today is what might Trump be
paving the way for? A narrow focus on Trump, as cause rather than symptom,
blocks or obscures the larger forces at play on numerous levels, mounting
crises at various levels, none of which bode well. Ein gespenst (ghost?) is
haunting America, (and it clearly isn’t that of communism). And that, it seems,
is what Giroux is arguing.

I usually am not “sarcasm-challenged” so I find myself wondering why the line
in your opener, "Only those people
who are for "regime change" and being paid off by the Rothschild Bank, I
guess." We know, of course, who those are who readily and regularly reference
the Rothschilds. You’re not slipping, are you, Louis?

Jerome Roos: "...In short, the global firestorm unleashed by the collapse of
Lehman Brothers ten years ago has by no means subsided. Not only are the
consequences of the financial crash still with us today, in the form of
widening inequality, rising debt and crippling political instability, but the
crisis of capitalism itself also persists and continues to wreak havoc across
the globe, constantly changing shape as it makes its way from one disturbance
to another….
