I had the good fortune to see Doc Watson live once. It was a small outdoor
affair in Vermont, summer of 1983 maybe?

I’ve only seen Bela Fleck one time as well. Victor Wooten, original bassist
with his group, is also no slouch. Not coincidentally, Fleck has a
wonderful documentary on the African origins of the banjo.

Crisis after the coup d'état
POLITICAL AND SOCIAL INSTABILITY IN BOLIVIA
Eduardo Paz Rada*

The coup in Bolivia has not been consolidated. In spite of the fact that
twenty-nine people have already been killed by the military and police, who
were given license to do so by means of a decree approved by Jannine Áñez
and her ministers, the coup regime does not possess the legal impramatur to
be considered a constitutional government with the authority to govern
Bolivia. This is in no small part due to the resistance of popular
movements in several regions of the country.

Even though the coup regime has been recognized by the United States, which
promoted the coup, by Brazil, led by the ultraconservative Jair Bolsonaro,
by the imperialist agent Luis Almagro of the Organization of American
States (OAS) and by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, none of this has
been sufficient to stabilize the coup. This is a soft coup, with
characteristics of its own, a variant of those that have occurred in
Brazil, Paraguay or Honduras.
The Armed Forces, aided by the National Police, continues to be the central
bastion of support for the self-proclaimed president, who is subject to
different pressures from the following political sectors:

The radicals of the Civic Committee of Santa Cruz, with their leader
Fernando Camacho, who have managed to give a racist and religious tone to
the regime, are looking for a fast electoral process. Their party,
(Movimiento Demócrata), which only received 4% of votes in the last
elections and responds to the most conservative positions of Santa Cruz,
intends, with several of its ministers, to adopt immediate neoliberal
economic measures. Carlos Mesa, former vice-president of the ultra
neoliberal regime of the nineties presided over by Gonzalo Sanchez de
Lozada, claims to give a legal "order" to the coup d'état and wants to
hold elections in the coming months. And finally we have the ultra-left
"poristas”, who imagine that the "workers revolution" has arrived.

Faced with these factions vying for power, Evo Morales continues to be the
ghost that frightens the coup and is the axis around which Bolivian
politics and society revolves, because he has, on the one hand, the loyalty
of the parliamentarians who have two-thirds of the chambers of deputies and
senators and, on the other hand, the popular movements in resistance.

The mobilizations by the coca growers of the central region of the Chapare,
by the residents of the populous city of El Alto, by the colonizers of
Yapacani, by the ayllus and miners of the North of Potosí, and by the
campesinos who have blocked the main highways of the country and surrounded
the capitals, have become bastions of resistance to the coup, with a toll
so far of twenty-nine dead, more than one hundred injured, and a similar
number of detainees. These demonstrations and blockades have raised the
slogans of defending democracy, demanding the return of Evo Morales,
vindicating the indigenous anti-colonial flag and national Wiphala symbol
and demanding the resignation of Jannine Añéz.

Both the National Coordination for Change (CONALCAM) and the Bolivian
Workers' Central (COB), which brings together trade union, neighborhood,
worker, peasant, women's, intercultural and indigenous organizations, have
become the organizational referents of the mobilizations together with the
Movement Toward Socialism (MAS).

The Chambers of Senators and Deputies, whose Presidents are Eva Copa and
Sergio Choque, both representatives of El Alto, are the political wing in
charge of managing the next elections. They will preside over the
nomination of members to a new National Electoral Tribunal (TNE). They
will need to approve the call for new national elections, although it is
not ruled out that the coup regime will choose to bypass or even close the
legislative Assembly outright.

All the while, Evo Morales has been isolated in Mexico at the behest of the
government of Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador. He arrived in Mexico on November
11th, after a dangerous flight boycotted by the governments of Peru and
Ecuador, which denied him airspace. He was supported, however, by Alberto
Fernandez, the future president of Argentina. Morales has become the
reference point for Bolivian politics, as much for his base of support
among the popular majority and the Legislative Assembly, as for his
detractors among the middle class and those claiming to be the governing
authority.

*Bolivian Sociologist and member of USMA

Postscript by Nestor Miguel Gorojovsky:

The question is what will happen if Áñez tries to make the last leap,
appoints an electoral tribunal that is clearly

Cautionary note from compañero N.G.

I would only state that the situation is in flux, the reports from Misión
Verdad have NOT been checked with independent sources, and that the
question is whether the regime will keep the negotiations with MAS alive or
will in the end, as Marco Teruggi guesses, break every dam, brush the
Assembly aside, and unleash a repressive wave that will include, first and
foremost, the military who don't abide by the coup.

There is too much lithium at stake. Bolivia holds 40% of the global
reserves of this metal.

The coup regime inside Bolivia is falling apart at the seams. According to
sources inside the military, there has been friction, both between the
military and the police, and between their respective leaders and foot
soldiers.

A Venezuelan source, Misión Verdad, says that Inter-institutional conflict
between these two armed groups has come to a head because this is the first
time in many years that both have been called on to share the
responsibility of repressing the civilian population. There has been
friction among the leaders.

There are also reports on Twitter saying that increasing numbers of
soldiers are defecting because they are no longer comfortable firing on
peaceful demonstrations.

To top it off, Mexican media has reported that Bruce Williamson at the US
Embassy in La Paz has operated as a bag man, doling out millions of dollars
to generals and police chiefs. The report states that the general who told
Morales to resign, Williams Kalimann, has already left for the USA with his
money. The article says that it expects more generals to follow suit as
they are fearful of being put on trial for their repressive acts, not to
mention their corruption.

Jorge Richter, a political analyst who was interviewed on Bolivian
television, reports that the coup regime has failed to legitimate the coup
in the eyes of the public. This is due to a political miscalculation. Añez
failed to negotiate with MAS the terms for new elections. In Bolivia, the
president cannot call new elections. That role falls to the Assembly,
which is controlled by MAS. Likewise the regional electoral organs of the
state are controlled by MAS and Morales. The political move calling for a
state of siege has proven to be a perhaps fatal miscalculation for the
leadership behind the coup. The golpistas were driven by petty motives of
revenge and an obsession with getting rid of Morales at the expense of
shrewd political calculation.

Most important, the public grows weary with the unlawful military
repression against the peaceful protests. Richter prefaced his remarks by
offering condolences to the families who lost loved ones at the hands of
state repression in Cochabamba last week.

According to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, 23 civilians
have been killed by Bolivian police and military since the coup on October
20th.

A few days after orchestrating a coup d'état in Bolivia, General Williams
Kaliman is no longer with the Bolivian military. He has fled to the United
States, which paid him one million dollars.

Other generals also received the same amount of cash.

The police chiefs received $500,000 each.

Everyone will now go to the U.S. for fear of trials within Bolivia and by
international organizations.

This is one reason that Bolivian media has not supported the coup. The
corrupt people behind the coup will continue to flee to the United States.

Bruce Williamson, a leader at the U.S. Embassy in La Paz, was responsible
for donating one million dollars to each military chief and five hundred
thousand dollars to each police chief.

“According to our source inside the military, the attempt to clothe the
coup d'état with legitimacy has failed. The repressive machinery in charge
of annihilating the counter-coup is beginning to crack. What seems to the
"good" public to be a new government that presumably has them all with it,
is showing signs of unease and disapproval with the latest events (of
massive repression), behind the scenes. There is a tangle of internal
conflicts, intrigues and splits inside both the Armed Forces and the
Police.”

UNREST, REJECTION AND DESERTIONS IN THE ARMED FORCES

"This is the first time that joint operations of a repressive nature have
been carried out between the Armed Forces (FFAA) and the Police in the last
20 years. Normally, political decisions for the use of both in repressive
acts were made independently; this is the first time that joint repressive
operations have being carried out, generating a malaise in both
institutions, due to a long inter-institutional conflict that has been
going on for more or less a century".

Not really.

Y me he convencido más

noviembre:

(...) Añez había asumido la presidencia interina". Subrayó a continuación

The fires in the Arctic are reaching apocalyptic levels. According to
Greenpeace of Russia 12 million hectares (over 29.6 million acres) have
been burned in Russia this year, with 3.2 million hectares actively on fire
in Siberia as of July 27th. In addition to burning vegetation, carbon-rich
peat is burning and will likely burn for months, releasing significant
carbon emissions. There were 50 megatonnes of carbon dioxide released in
June across the Arctic from fires, surpassing the total emissions released
from the Arctic in June in 2010-2018 combined. By late-July, total
emissions reached 121 megatonnes, exceeding the record emissions season for
fire in the Arctic in 2004 of 110 megatonnes. Fires have not only burned in
the Siberian Arctic, but also Alaska, the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, and
Scandinavia. There are 72 active fires in Alaska as of July 29th, with five
over 40,500 hectares (100,000 acres) and one approaching 202,300 hectares
(500,000 acres). As previously mentioned, much of soot from the fires will
fall on snow and ice in the Arctic, reducing albedo and accelerating
melting of both.

4. Large emissions of methane gas appear to be venting from the Arctic
Basin. This can be seen via satellite atmospheric sounding data showing
wide swaths in the middle atmosphere over the Arctic Ocean with emissions
of at least 2000 parts of billion of methane (considered a large
concentration). Methane is at least 150 times more powerful a greenhouse
gas than carbon dioxide on timescales of 5 years or less and is growing in
concentration in Earth's atmosphere.

Arctic feedbacks accelerate climate change through carbon releases from
thawing permafrost and higher solar absorption from reductions in the
surface albedo, following loss of sea ice and land snow. Here, we include
dynamic emulators of complex physical models in the integrated assessment
model PAGE-ICE to explore nonlinear transitions in the Arctic feedbacks and
their subsequent impacts on the global climate and economy under the Paris
Agreement scenarios. The permafrost feedback is increasingly positive in
warmer climates, while the albedo feedback weakens as the ice and snow
melt. Combined, these two factors lead to significant increases in the mean
discounted economic effect of climate change: +4.0% ($24.8 trillion) under
the 1.5 °C scenario, +5.5% ($33.8 trillion) under the 2 °C scenario, and
+4.8% ($66.9 trillion) under mitigation levels consistent with the current
national pledges. Considering the nonlinear Arctic feedbacks makes the 1.5
°C target marginally more economically attractive than the 2 °C target,
although both are statistically equivalent.

There is a Facebook group titled “faster than previously expected “.

“New evidence suggests that permafrost is thawing much faster than
previously thought,” the report warns. Indeed, a recent study found that
Siberian permafrost at depths of up to 30 feet warmed a remarkable 1.6°F
(0.9°C) from 2007 to 2016. “

In a rapid warming scenario:

1. a stronger-than-expected El Niño would contribute to
2. early demise of the Arctic sea ice, i.e. latent heat tipping point +
3. associated loss of sea ice albedo,
4. destabilization of seafloor methane hydrates, causing eruption of vast
amounts of methane that further speed up Arctic warming and cause
5. terrestrial permafrost to melt as well, resulting in even more
emissions,
6. while the Jet Stream gets even more deformed, resulting in more extreme
weather events
7. causing forest fires, at first in Siberia and Canada and
8. eventually also in the peat fields and tropical rain forests of the
Amazon, in Africa and South-east Asia, resulting in
9. rapid melting on the Himalayas, temporarily causing huge flooding,
10. followed by drought, famine, heat waves and mass starvation, and
11. collapse of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

*Anthropocene tipping points*

“During the late Anthropocene³, accelerating since about 1960, the rise of
radiative forcing due mainly to increasing greenhouse gas concentration
above >457 ppm CO₂-equivalent, accounts for a rise of mean global
temperatures by 0.98°C since 1880 *(NASA (2018) *A further rise by more
than >0.5°C is masked by aerosols, mainly sulphur dioxide and sulfuric
acid *(Hansen
et al., 2011)*.

The temperature rise is potentially further enhanced by amplifying
feedbacks from land and oceans, including infrared absorption by water
surfaces following sea ice melting, reduction of CO₂ concentration in
warming water, release of methane and fires. However, climate change
trajectories are likely to be highly irregular as a result of stadial ocean
cooling events affected by flow of ice melt. Whereas similar temperature
fluctuations including stadial events have occurred during past
interglacial periods *(Cortese et al. 2007; figure 1)*, with a further rise
in atmospheric greenhouse gases the intensity and frequency of extreme
weather events would enter uncharted territory unlike any recorded during
the Pleistocene, potentially rendering large parts of the continents
uninhabitable *(Wallace-Wells, 2019)*.“

MANAGALURU: Even if the world were to cut emissions in line with the Paris
Agreement, winter temperatures in the
Arctic

would rise 3-5°C by 2050 and 5-9°C by 2080, devastating the region and
unleashing sea level rises worldwide, finds a new report by UN Environment.

Even if global emissions were to halt overnight, winter temperatures in the
Arctic would still increase 4 to 5°C by 2100 compared to the late 20th
century, the study finds. This increase is locked into the climate system
by greenhouse gases already emitted and ocean heat storage.

[Marxism] Accelerating Rise in Greenhouse Gas Levels

https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2019/03/accelerating-rise-in-greenhouse-gas-levels.html?m=1

ACCELERATING RISE IN GREENHOUSE GAS LEVELS

“The rise in the levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere continues
to accelerate. Over the past 31 days, CO₂ levels at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, have
been above 410 ppm, while on March 3, 2019, some average hourly readings
exceeded 415 ppm. The levels recorded in the year up until now weren't
expected to occur until April/May 2019.

Strong CO₂ growth could occur over the next few years, due to releases from
increased burning of fossil fuel and biomass, more forest fires and melting
permafrost, and the added impact of stronger El Niño events and less uptake
of carbon dioxide by oceans and ecosystems.

Growth in methane (CH₄) levels is also accelerating. An image is added
showing the highest mean methane levels recorded by the MetOp satellites on
March 10 for the years 2013 to 2019 at selected altitudes. Global methane
levels in March are at a seasonal low. The highest global means occur in
September. On September 3, 2018, global methane means as high as 1905 ppb
were recorded at 307 mb, an altitude at which some of the strongest growth
in methane has occurred.

The MetOp satellites have some difficulty measuring methane at lower
altitudes. Also included is a NPP satellite image showing high methane
levels across the Arctic Ocean close to sea level, with mean levels of 1842
ppb recorded at 1000 mb, i.e. surface level. This indicates that high
methane levels do occur as a result of releases from the Arctic Ocean.

A further image shows that peak methane levels were as high as 2947 ppb on
March 7, 2019. The image also shows worryingly high methane levels over
Antarctica.

Growth in nitrous oxide (N₂O) is not often discussed, yet it's very
important both because of the high global warming potential and long
lifetime of N₂O, and because of the ozone depletion it causes in the
stratosphere. An image is added showing mean levels of N₂O of 320 ppb, with
peaks reaching levels as high as 345.2 ppb at 1000 mb (sea level) on March
10, 2019.

The image also shows high levels of nitrous oxide over the Arctic Ocean.
Levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are generally higher in the
Arctic than in the rest of the world, which contributes to the accelerating
warming of the Arctic.

In summary, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are rising at accelerating
pace, and this spells bad news, the more so since, next to CH₄, CO₂ and
N₂O, there are additional warming elements that can further speed up the
temperature rise, such as black carbon, or soot, water vapor, loss of
Arctic sea ice, etc.

How much could the global temperature rise? An earlier analysis concludes
that a temperature rise of 18°C or 32.4°F could eventuate by 2026, while
life on Earth will already have disappeared with a 5°C or 9°F temperature
rise.”

I’m certainly not an expert on Venezuela by any stretch, but the idea that
the Bolivarian military and civilian militias are agents of the working
class is not a new idea. The Argentine Jorge Abelardo Ramos developed a
synthesis of Bolivar and Marx. Néstor G. introduced me to his writings some
time ago, none of which have been translated into English as far as I know.

While gringos used Venezuela as a backdrop to trade political barbs, Rubio
and company engaged in an act of cyber-sabotage, plunging the country into
darkness:

Cyberattack on Ven electricity grid

"The attack consisted in altering the software that regulates the
generators of the power plant, which automatically turn off as a security
measure, he said."

---

For correlation, the Mauna Loa CO2 reading for Feb. 23 was 411.13 ppm. Just
in the last few years Hanson was stressing the importance of keeping those
emission levels below 350 ppm.

The upper balance heat level readings for CO2 and methane from a few days
ago were pretty much off the chart.

Btw that globe link isn’t exactly real time, there’s a lag of a few hours.

not have changed irregardless of Sandinista policy. The FMLN certainly did
not need revolutionary encouragement from the Sandinistas as they were for
the most part very interested in going down a Socialist path, but alas they
could only fight the largest military power in the planet to a bloody
standstill. Guess they had not read their Trotsky, otherwise they would
have prevailed? Or what exactly?

And speaking of the rest of Central America, let us not forget that
Honduras and Costa Rica were contra staging grounds.

Yeah the balance of forces was so in favor of revolutionary upheaval that a
slight nod from a more revolutionary leadership in Managua would have
certainly resulted in a massive social explosion and the incorporation of
the entire isthmus into a revolutionary project.

Did someone say something about no evidence of Russian hacking?

“The Intercept, an online news outlet that a prosecutor said Ms. Winner

published a copy of the top secret report

shortly before Ms. Winner’s arrest was made public. The report described
two cyberattacks by Russia’s military intelligence unit, the G.R.U. — one

and another, a few days before the election, against 122 local election

The Whitey Bulger factor is probably at play, not only within the FBI
amidst their 30 year old snooping among the Trump properties, but also
among our own ruling class, which doesn’t seem to be able to say no to
smurfs and their illicit cash, from a whole range of nefarious sources.

Terrible international player? I think you may be overstating you case.

In the previous World Cup, UEFA play, and in the qualifying rounds for the
World Cup in Russia, he had plenty of assists and some goals. He was the
toast of Berlin when Germany won the cup 4 years ago for his stellar play.
Maybe if they had played him in more than 2 matches this time ‘round the
German side would not have sucked so loudly, but then again it’s difficult
to see how any one individual could have saved the German team from such
lackluster performance in Russia.

Good article by Dixon, but let’s look at what this one individual has
accomplished in the space of what, 3 or 4 days? She’s made the tv circuit
and spoken eloquently about her political stance. Most important, she
articulated the demand to abolish ICE, which has been picked up by
protesters all across the country. Pretty successful pushback IMO.

Planning for the strike began around last Thanksgiving. An anonymous letter

(FightXPrisons)
and the Gainesville branch of the Industrial Workers of the World

of prison labor, carrying forward their traditional support for workers
other sectors of the formal labor movement have tended to ignore.

I agree wholeheartedly with DW on this. The argument against the book has
nothing to do with adopting NRA talking points but rather the author’s
cherry picking and historical distortions. During the Congressional debates
on the reconstruction amendments, republicans repeatedly used the 2nd
amendment as a legal basis on which to argue in favor of extending gun
rights to freed slaves. The civil war’s emancipation of the Slaves made
such revolutionary reinterpretations of the 2A necessary in order to
counter newly passed laws in southern states which enabled the klan to
disarm freedmen. It is immaterial whether or not such inclusive
reinterpretations of the militia were pointless from a military
institutional perspective after 1877. There were more pressing matters at
hand in the 2nd half of the 1860’s.

Yeah I read it, the article that is. I’m not really concerned with Hudson’s
policy prescriptions, and I am quite sure you are correct to point out the
limits of policies based on a fixation over the circulation of capital. But
on the point of the relationship between the ministry of Jesus and the
jubilee principle the article is spot on.

Since I have not seen Hudson’s actual book I cannot be sure, but I would be
terribly surprised if Yoder, who wrote his book in 1972, is not quoted
heavily. I’m pretty sure Graeber was not even a grad student in 1972.

One would have thought the book was titled the third klan, not the second.
Which begs the question. What the Fuck is the author talking about? There
is no new wave of klan that I see. Even the alt right spencerites

Take Action: Dictator in Honduras attempts to steal Presidential election

Call the US Embassy in Honduras: 011-504-2238-5114

Call your Congressional Representatives and Senators:
(202) 224-3121

Dear Greg,

We received an urgent call from for solidarity regarding Sunday's
presidential election in Honduras.

Popular forces are mobilizing in the capital right now to defend the
results of the election, in which Salvador Nasralla, backed by a diverse
coalition called Alliance to End the Dictatorship, ousted current President
Juan Orlando Hernandez of the National Party. *For more background, check
out this article*

.

United in struggle,

-CISPES

*Message from International Election Observers*

We, an international delegation sponsored by La Voz de los de Abajo,
CODEPINK, and the Honduras Solidarity Network, urge you to contact the US
Embassy in Tegucigalpa as well as your Congressional representatives to *demand
that the US stop all support* (political and economic) for Juan Orlando
Hernandez as he attempts to steal an election to extend his dictatorship.

We urge you to support the Honduran people in their effort to *stand up to
Juan Orlando Hernandez's voter fraud, intimidation, and dictatorship* by
contacting the US Embassy and your elected officials with the demand that
all support end now.

US Embassy Tegucigalpa: 011-504-2238-5114 or 011-504-2236-9320

US Capital Switchboard (to contact your Senators and Representatives):
(202) 224-3121

Feel free to use the following observations from our delegation, which is
currently in Honduras, as talking points:

   - Since the days leading up to the election to now, Honduras has been in
a constantly escalating *state of militarization and intimidation*
intended to strike fear into those willing to vote against Juan Orlando
   Hernandez and the National Party.
   - Two members of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Marco Lobo and
Eric Mejia, have shared statements that Salvador Nasralla's *lead in the
   vote is irreversible*.

Despite this, there has been an unprecedented delay in the official
announcement of the winner of the election.

   - As the delay persists, there are widespread reports on social
media of *voter
fraud *to benefit Juan Orlando Hernandez and the National Party. This
includes a video of piles of blank ballots being stamped en masse for Juan
   Orlando Hernandez
   - Incidences of scattered violence are occurring around the country as
National Party forces try to gain control of ballot boxes
(including *stabbings,
shootings, kidnappings, and other forms of threats and intimidation*)
   - According to social media reports, Une TV's broadcast building (which
has recognized Salvador Nasralla as the President Elect of Honduras) has
been circled by either military or police.

These are all signs of a dictatorship and are not reflective of fair,
democratic elections.

In all of the meetings we have had with social movement leaders since the
Supreme Electoral Tribunal's announcement of Nasralla's lead (and apparent
victory), they all said that Juan Orlando Hernandez is likely very
surprised by this result and warned that he does not want to give up power
and will do anything he can do to stay in power.

The *m**ilitarization and weapons of war that our delegation observed* on
Election Day give weight to the alarms being sounded. Furthermore, right
now, organizations and people from across Honduras are mobilizing to go to
Tegucigalpa to recognize and defend Salvador Nasralla and the Alliance to
End the Dictatorship as the rightful winner of the election.

When I was living in the Berkshires I asked for this book through
inter-library loan. The copy I received looked like it had been through a
meat grinder, similar to the broke down appearance of the Du Bois country
home in Great Barrington, a piece of property owned by the university of
Massachusetts.

Following on the heels of the big anti-Iraq war demo in NYC, some of us
thought it would be fitting to have an anti war march through South
Egremont ending at the Du Bois site. We had various speakers lined up
including a local minister and an old panther. Apparently the local police
chief did not agree because she made sure our little march was hounded by a
few of her drunk relatives. Earlier in the day an old fart living next door
to “that commie Du Bois”, as he put it, had threatened me with a shotgun
from his front porch. I should have taken that as a sign.

After our little march ended on a dark and rainy note I was followed home
by a tie dyed undercover and 2 weeks later a new resident showed up in the
downstairs apartment.

I moved out shortly thereafter only to discover a year down the road my new
temporary home in Otis had been bugged.

I never finished reading the Du Bois tome.

[Marxism] Scott Camil on the Ken Burns Vietnam Series

Although his name may not be very familiar on the national level, those of
us who have been active on the left in Gainesville, FL in years past will
have invariably come in contact with Mr. Camil, Vietnam veteran, member of
VVAW and currently active in Vets for Peace. Scott Camil was one of the
Gainesville 8. because of his active opposition to the Vietnam war, the
Nixon administration put him on a hit list and targeted him to be
"neutralized". Subsequently he was shot in the back by undercover police.

Scott has written a series of reaction papers to each episode of the Ken
Burns series and put them upon his Facebook timeline.

Episode 1
PBS Vietnam broadcast: They said that the war began in good faith. They did
not make the case and the Pentagon Papers tell a different story. They
called it a brutal civil war and again did not make the case. When you are
fighting against your own citizens who are backing foreign troops that is
patriotism and protecting your home from foreign occupiers. They left out a
bunch about the Geneva Accords and all of the American violations of it.
They left out the part where the French and British released and armed
Japanese prisoners and went after the Viet Minh. No mention that the
900,000 Catholics who left the northern sector of Vietnam were responding
to the leaflets that we dropped all over the north saying that the
Communists would kill them. This first show had some good stuff, like why
did the US, a former colony, support colonization as opposed to supporting
those fighting for independence and self determination. They did not
explain the reasons. All in all, they are leaving out important history
that would show the US in a less positive light. There is no way to make
the American war against the Vietnamese a noble endeavor.

Scott Camil

I thought that tonights episode 2 did a better job with the history than
last night. I am attaching a paper that I wrote in 1995 on Robert S.
McNamara's book, In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam.

When the news of McNamara’s book, In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of
Vietnam, first became public, I was both elated and dismayed. I was elated
by the fact that one of the planners of the Vietnam War had finally
admitted that the war in Vietnam was “terribly wrong”. What dismayed me was
that I had to point to this man’s book to achieve “official” credibility
for something that everyone I know has known for a long time. I rushed
right out to get the book, and the first thing I did was read the chapter
dealing with the American-sponsored assassination of South Vietnamese
president Diem and the chapter dealing with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution,
two issues which were key to our escalation in Vietnam and controversial. I
figured that I knew enough about these two issues to decide whether or not
I considered McNamara’s book to be honest.

McNamara’s dealing with the Diem assassination was what I had understood it
to be. Basically Diem refused to control his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu’s [head
of South Vietnamese security forces] repression of the Buddhist protesters.
The United States also suspected that Diem was trying to secretly work out
a deal with France that would reunify the country, so we decided to get rid
of him (I believe this is commonly known as murder). There was a coup and
Diem and his brother-in-law were murdered. The United States had a new
South Vietnamese President to order around.

Concerning the Tonkin Gulf incident, in August of 1964, Congress passed a
resolution known as the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which “was the closest
that the U.S. ever came to a declaration of war” (p. 127) against Vietnam.
President Johnson’s administration continually used the Gulf of Tonkin
Resolution [which was passed unanimously in the House, and with only two
dissenting votes in the Senate, one from Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon and
one from Senator Ernest Gruening of Alaska] “to justify the
constitutionality of the military actions it took in Vietnam from 1965 on.”
The Johnson administration claimed that two American warships, the U.S.S.
Turner Joy and the U.S.S. Maddox, were attacked by North Vietnamese patrol
boats in international waters and that the attack was unprovoked. This is
one of the most controversial issues of our involvement in Vietnam.

I was hoping to find a smoking gun that would point to deception ordered by

The author writes:

"The reason Trumpism looks so similar to fascism may be due to the fact
that fascism has usually had a close relationship with organized crime in
its society. In Japan, for example, the social links between the Yakuza
networks and the right wing political forces are well known. The same close
ties exist between the Italian fascists and mafia families in that country.
The same in Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan and many other countries throughout
the world."

Perhaps Reza Fiyouzat could explain how Mussolini's alliance with the Mafia
led to the arrest of 11,000 alleged members of the Siciian Mob by 1928,
with 1,200 convicted and imprisoned. This happened on Mussolini's direct
orders to eradicate the Sicilian Mafia. Let us also not forget to mention
the alliance between the OSS and the Mafia leading up to the US invasion of
Italy.

Time Magazine Monday, Oct. 24, 1927

"More than a year has sped by since, at Premier Mussolini's orders, the
dread Mafia (or Black Hand organization) was hunted down on the island of
Sicily, captured, jailed. For centuries the Mafia protected Sicilians while
the island was under foreign rule. When Italy became unified in 1870, the
Mafia (in reality a coalition of gangs) turned brigands and terrorized the
island ruthlessly. Not until the advent of Signor Mussolini and his
Fascist! has any government dared to put down their wholesale lawlessness,
although many half-hearted attempts have been made..."

Here's what Bruce Dixon is saying:

"Stop and think about it. In 2017 there will be elections for school
boards, mayors, alderman, county commissioners and a host of local offices.
Hundreds of Green candidates will be running. If presidential election
results in multiple states can be gamed, and there is persuasive evidence
to suggest they were, what makes you think the same thing won't happen to
Green candidates in local elections in 2017?
We don't give a damn about Hillary or Trump. But we care very much about
the integrity and security of the election process, unlike the Repubs and
the Dems."

Swastikas have been found spray-painted on churches, playgrounds, and
college walls. White Texas high school students chanted "Build that wall"
during a volleyball game with a predominantly Hispanic rival school.
Internet personality and model Tila Tequila was suspended from Twitter
after she was photographed giving a "Heil Hitler" sign at a restaurant
following the post-election gathering in Washington, D.C., of the National
Policy Institute, an "alt-right" organization.

"It's best that I be proactive," said Scott, a fiery 49-year-old financial
analyst. "I know where I live."

She's from Alpharetta, Georgia. It borders Forsyth County, which in 1912
systematically drove out nearly all its black residents for the next
quarter century. After two alleged attacks on white women, a black suspect
was lynched and two more were hanged after a short trial. Armed bands of
whites began terrorizing blacks, torching homes and churches in night
raids, firing through the door, telling them it was time to "get" [out of
America] and then seized their homes and land. As recently as 1987 the
county saw the marching of 5,000 white supremacists.

[Marxism] Dylan’s revolutionary lyrics celebrate play, protest

http://www.peoplesworld.org/article/dylans-revolutionary-lyrics-celebrate-play-protest/

This is a fairly good article. I would disagree with the characterization
of "John Wesley Harding" as apolitical, however, given it contains "All
Along the Watchtower". That song is simply Isaiah (21: 5-9 ) put to music.
I'm not gonna quote scripture on the marxmail forum, so you can look it up
yourselves The point being the whole album carries a strong apocalyptic
tone, much like the rest of Dylan's work. Marqusee writes that a friend who
visited Dylan's home in Woodstock saw only two books on his table--a Bible
and a Hank Williams lyric sheet.

The album also rehashes the old "Joe Hill" song "I dreamed I saw St.
Augustine", with the Christian saint standing in for Joe. This was a
popular front song from the 30's written at a communist party-inspired
summer workshop in upstate NY. Dylan's version contains the stunning line:
"No martyrs are among you now who you can call your own". Not that there
were not martyrs, but that "the public world is now too inauthentic to
sustain anything as grand as a martyr", writes Marqusee. Ironically the
writer himself is one among the mob that has killed the saint. Marqusee
surmises "The only prophecy the artist can make with confidence is that he
and his message will be rejected by a world that values all the wrong
things". Hard to argue with that. The song indicts us all.

I'm reminded here of two later songs, "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)", and
"Everything is Broken". I like this version of the former, with Willie
Nelson backed up by Calexico:

And here's good old R.L. performing the latter:

That sounds like Derek Trucks on slide. Buddy Guy sits in as well.

Continuing with the Hayden/Dylan theme, at least Hayden apologized. Dylan,
on the other hand, celebrated operation Opera, the Israeli bombing of an
Iraqi nuclear facility, in his song "Neighborhood Bully". He has continued
to ignore calls to boycott Israel. His latest concert there was in 2011 I
believe. Marqusee refers to the song as a "bewildered Zionist apologia".

On his later work, i have not read Maqusee's newest edition, "Wicked
Messenger", but I am a huge fan of albums such as "Oh Mercy", "Time out of
Mind", "Love and Theft", and "Modern Times". Dylan uses the backdrop of
the apocalypse to create a mood that matches the inner emotions of
heartbreak and loss. Below are a few examples:

Not Dark Yet (but it's getting there)

When the Deal Goes Down

And here's our favorite son Chris Robinson and the Brotherhood doing a
Dylan cover:

Sure am glad Chris doesn't have to scream over Rich and Marc's guitars
anymore.

Marqusee argues that in spite of himself Dylan did make the world a better
place with his music.

Early on Dylan seemed to be torn between emulating Little Richard, on the
one hand, and Woody Guthrie, on the other. He reconciled that dilemma by
achieving a synthesis. The interesting part is the reaction he got from the
hard-core folkies. The level of hostility directed toward him was simply
beyond belief. When he took the Band on his electric tour, he would start
with an acoustic set, playing from his early protest repertoire, and in the
second set the Band would come on stage and plug in for the electric part
of the show. But even that was not enough for the hardcore folk fans
addicted to "form".

In this clip from "No Direction Home", a fan calls him Judas from the
audience. You can see Dylan's reaction. He then turns to the Band and tells
them to "play it fucking loud".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCGPhzWWgco

In another scene from the same film, his coterie discusses what to do in
response to a death threat. Both Dylan and the Beatles were receiving a
multitude of death threats. Dylan had set up residence with his wife Sara
and her child in Woodstock. When Dylan caught word of the festival which
was to be organized just down the road, he lit out for the Isle of Wight
because he was concerned about people wandering around on his property. Any
crazed and disillusioned folkie with a gun could do him harm. Look what
happened to Lennon. So much for music "making the world a better place".
What does one do with a Judas after all? You murder him. Music seemed to be
bringing the worst out in people, not the best.

Here he is at the Isle of Wight. He was relaxed and in good spirits. The
Beatles were in the audience. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, but
Altamont was just around the corner.

http://www.jambase.com/article/watch-rare-footage-bob-dylan-band-isle-wight-1969

In "The Last Waltz", Robbie Robertson was asked why the Band decided to
call it a day. Look, he said, we've been on the road for 16 years. Three
members of our group are already junkies. The new wave of artists seemed to
be more interested in breaking things up, but we were not really interested
in all that so we began to destroy ourselves instead.

In an earlier interview with the press after going electric, a reporter
asks Dylan if his new interest in rock music meant he was selling out, and
if so, what was his choice for achieving fame and fortune. Dylan responded,
"ladies garments". One of the first commercials in which he allowed one of
his songs to be used was an ad for Victoria's Secret, about a million years
later.

Something else comes to mind. I don't think Dylan ever thought for one
minute that by writing and singing songs he could help make the world a
better place.
