*Marian Price* is a long-time revolutionary activist in the national
liberation struggle in Ireland. She was imprisoned in Britain in the 1970s
for her activities in the IRA. While in prison she went on hunger strike
and was force-fed for more than 100 days.

Marian left the Provos in 1998 over disagreements with the direction taken
by the republican leadership and became active in the 32-County Sovereignty
Movement. She was later imprisoned without trial for several years.

This interview was actually done some time in the early 2000s, but remains
highly relevant to the evolution of the Provos and the critiques of their
rightward shifts.

Abortion is no longer in the Crimes Act in New Zealand. The law reform
passed yesterday and now abortion is a medical matter between a woman and
her doctor.

Many women's groups and progressive people have campaigned for reform for
decades.

The women's liberation movement and some of the far-left in the 1970s had
mounted a fierce battle for abortion rights but the third Labour government
was committed to maintaining rigid restrictions and began efforts to close
the Auckland abortion clinic, with a police raid, repressive legislation
and charges against the clinic's director.

National under Muldoon carried on Labour's work. . .

A fascinating article/interview by Daphna Whitmore with veteran British
anti-imperialist activist Tony Greenstein. Tony has been active around
Ireland, but is primarily noted for many years of activism and analysis and
general writing in relation to the Palestinian cause and the nature of the
Israeli state and Zionism. Recently he has been writing about the Zionist
assault on free speech in Britain in relation to Palestinian liberation and
similarities with the clampdown on free speech for gender-critical
feminists and leftists. Well worth a read. . .

"Johnson worked for NASA, a predominantly white and male institution. When

"The 1960s was a time of upheaval and change in conservative Irish society;
social attitudes, fashion and music, for instance, all changed
dramatically. New social movements reflected the thinking of a new
generation that, in particular, wanted more freedom. The huge
student-worker protests of May-June 1968 in France, the Vietnamese struggle
to remove the US States, its allies and their Vietnamese toadies, the US
civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements, and the national liberation
struggles in Latin America and Africa galvanised opposition to the existing
order. In Ireland, these events inspired people, especially the new
generation, into action. This was especially the case around the civil
rights movement in the north of Ireland. Among the new organisations which
emerged here as a result of this new ferment and revolutionary idealism was
the Dublin-based Saor Éire (SE) or, to give it its full name, the Saor Eire
Action Group.

"Saor Éire Acton Group was established in the late 1960s by former members
of the Republican Movement and newer young Irish political left activists
coming together. As an organisation they claimed to have their roots. . .

In mid-December the Israeli secret police, the Shin Beit, revealed it had
arrested dozens of Palestinian left-wing activists, including members of
the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), in the previous
few months.

Among those arrested was one of the central leaders of the PFLP, Khalida
Jarrar. As well as being a member of the central leadership of the PFLP,
she is a renowned Palestinian feminist and lawmaker. Comrade Jarrar has
been regularly subject to bogus arrests and administrative detentions –
these give the Israeli state licence to hold people without charge of

*On March 3, 1991, pro-British terrorists of the Ulster Volunteer Force
attacked people drinking at Boyle’s Bar in the village of Cappagh in the
six counties (“Northern Ireland”).They shot dead four people, three of
whom were IRA members (Cappagh is a staunchly republican village). Tommy
O’Sullivan (51) was the civilian and was in the bar; John Quinn (23),
Malcolm Nugent (20) and Dwayne O’Donnell (17) were the IRA Volunteers, who
were shot in a car arriving in the car park. Local IRA leader Brian
Arthurs survived as patrons barricaded the doors when they heard shooting
outside. This was one of the many occasions in which loyalist killers
collaborated with state forces. The following statement has been released
by representatives of the families of the Cappagh Victims have released
this statement, as Sinn Fein has been embracing the Police Service of
Northern Ireland (PSNI), which is riddled with people involved in
collaboration with loyalist killers and is integral to the whole repressive
apparatus of the British state in the occupied part of Ireland. – P.F. *

Contrary to both the book and the review, the partition of Ireland had
nothing to do with the warring natives.

It was imposed by the British ruling class and their state to defeat the
Irish national liberation struggle and bring about the most conservative
outcome to that struggle.

The Unionists didn't want or ask for partition, the Nationalists certainly
didn't and even the British politicians originally were not keen on it.
The Brits took it up as a way of throwing a barrier across Irish radicalism
and the possibility that a left-wing Ireland would represent a threat on
Britain's western flank, especially in the wake of the Russian Revolution.

It's very strange to see a post on Marxmail pushing a view - the warring
natives did it, milord - that is actually the one the imperialists pushed
to justify their partition.

In the November 1918 British general election, Sinn Fein swept the boards
across most of Ireland, capturing 73 of the 105 Irish seats at
Westminster. They stood on an abstentionist platform. In January 1919,
the elected Sinn Fein MPs, rather than taking their seats at Westminster,
met in Dublin and established an independent Irish parliament (Dail

embracing radical social change to benefit the vast majority of the
population. Here is the Democratic Programme in both the Irish and English

Three days after the British paratroopers murdered peaceful civil rights
protesters on the streets of Derry at the end of January 1972, tens of
thousands of people marched in Dublin to the British embassy and burnt it
to the ground. The Southern state decided to stand back was the smartest
policy. They knew the Southern masses were fired up and it was best not to
put themselves between those masses and the British state. Republicans held
the high ground and the northern resistance forces enjoyed mass support in
the south.

Less than a decade later, in the 1981 hunger strikes, the Southern state
unleashed violence against the mass movement, however. They were prepared
to use the guards (the Southern cops) to beat thousands and thousands of
supporters of the hunger strikers off the streets. This article, written on
the 40th anniversary of Bloody Sunday (in 2012) looks at what happened in
the aftermath of the massacre and the burning of the Brit embassy and how
the Southern quislings got back the initiative.

*In his 1914 book *The Crime Against Ireland and How the War May Right it*,
Sir Roger Casement wrote, “Sedition (is) the natural garment for an
Irishman to wear”. Casement wore it well. A participant in the
preparations for the 1916 Easter Rising, Casement arrived in at Banna
Strand in Co. Kerry (northwest of Tralee) on board a ship from Germany with
a large consignment of weaponry for the rebels. However the rendezvous did
not take place and Casement was captured on April 21, 1916. He was
subsequently held in Pentonville Prison in London and hung for treason on
August 3. **At his trial, he made a speech from the dock; he had written
the body of it while in prison. Below is the text. I have broken up some
paragraphs which were huge in the original.*

*This text is longer than that often found on the internet. I have taken it
from *The Great Prisoners: the first anthology of literature written in
prison*, selected and edited by Isidore Abramavotich, New York: E.P. Dutton
& Company, 1946. Abramovitch lists the range of his Casement sources on
p869.*

I have added subheads to break up the text. . .

Britain’s exit from the imperialist bloc known as the European Union (EU)
is now irreversible. The crushing electoral defeat of the Labour Party has
dismayed many workers and youth who had placed their hopes in Jeremy
Corbyn, its left-wing leader. This article assesses these historic events,
neither of which can be understood in isolation from the other. . .

Starting on December 5th, 2019 workers in the Parisian rail network
commenced an open-ended strike in opposition to French President Emmanuel
Macron’s proposed changes to their pension scheme. Rail workers in the
Metro Underground have, for decades, had retirement conditions that
compensate them for the low wages, unhealthy work environment and
antisocial hours that come with their jobs. Driving trains in the
Underground rail network means spending hours of every workday under the
ground and so the workers are seldom able to even see the sun. It is well
documented that this is not good for human health. In addition, working in
the Metro means frequently working antisocial hours due to the requirement
for shift work. Shift work is of course, another contributor to poor health
outcomes.

Macron, who ran for office as a “political outsider”, neither right nor
left and uncontaminated by the mistrust many French workers have for the
dominant mainstream Parties, came into politics from the world of finance,
claiming that he would surmount traditional political divisions and lead
France from the centre, devoid of the ideology he claimed cripples the
French political system. Since assuming office, Macron has continued the
sort of austerity policies familiar to many throughout the Western world,
attempting to shift more costs onto French workers, while forcing them to
work longer into what should have been their retirement years.

French Metro drivers can, in theory, retire at 50.8 years because for
decades, the drivers’ union has protected early retirement as a means of
compensating the drivers for the poor working conditions that they endure.
Despite this, low pay means that often the drivers work almost five more
years than that, retiring on average at 55.5 years. Most other employees of
RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens, the state owned transport
provider) are eligible to retire at 55.8 years, administrative staff at
60.8 years. This is not acceptable to the employer (the State) or the
government. Macron wants to push through a “one size fits all” pension plan
that would raise the retirement age for all workers to 62 years,
irrespective of the working conditions or previously negotiated terms and
conditions.

The strike has continued well into January, making it

*This interview is from Aotearoa Workers Solidarity Movement (AWSM
) and is the first of an ongoing series of interviews
they plan to do with workers from various sectors who are having their well
being and livelihoods damaged. They begin with an educator in Southland.
Due to the attitude and actions of his employers, he has asked to remain
anonymous. Thanks to AWSM for sharing this with us.*

*Introduction*

Workers in Aotearoa (like workers everywhere) are under attack from those
who own and control the undemocratic places where we are employed. The
corporate media have little interest in bringing this to light. So, its up
to us at the bottom of this system to highlight the reality we are
experiencing.

*AWSM*: Thanks for agreeing to this interview. Would you like to tell us
something about your work.

*WORKER*: Hi, I’m an educator with adults, young and the not so young,
looking to upskill their literacy

*AWSM*: Do you enjoy your work?

*WORKER*: Immensely. It’s making a useful contribution to society, and
while I am aware really the main demands of my job are to make people fit
for capitalism, in terms of being upskilled to join the employment force, l
like to embed a lot of critical thinking skills around, for example,
checking sources of news articles and what bias may come from them,
interpreting the difference between facts and opinions, and seeing through
advertising. In this way I like to think at least I’m giving people tools
to deal with the capitalist media system, or at least attempting to.

*AWSM*: Is there anything you don’t like?

*WORKER*: Well yes, my terms and conditions leave a lot to be desired. For
example. . . .

On Wednesday (January 8) another massive general strike took place in
India. Some 250 million industrial workers, white-collar workers,
agricultural labourers struck against the government’s economic policies
and attacks on the Muslim population through new proposed citizenship rules.

This is the fourth massive general strike since September 2015.

I read this book a couple of years ago and meant to review it then, but
other things got in the way. To make up for the delay, I’ve done something
bigger – basically a mix of summary and review:

Coakley begins with a brief survey of bourgeois and anti-capitalist
attempts to explain uneven development, from Weber and Durkheim to Gramsci,
Jack goody, Immanuel Wallerstein and Robert Brenner. Coakley is concerend,
in particular, with the different patterns of growth exhibited in Britain
(especially England but also Scotland and Wales) and does so by exploring
the unequal relations between them from the medieval era onwards.

Imposition of feudalism

He notes that the Anglo-Norman conquest resulted in the division of Ireland
into Gaelic and Anglo-Norman regions. While the boundaries and interactions
were fluid, they possessed different social structures. In the Anglo-Norman
areas, a manorial/feudal economy was developed, with the local nobility
owing allegiance to the English monarch. The peasantry which worked the
land for the new elite included a layer of free peasants (largely
transplanted from England) and a larger layer of unfree peasants (serfs) of
Irish stock. This latter group was less free than the unfree peasants
(villeins) in England itself. For instance, they had no legal rights at all.

The crisis of feudalism throughout the 1300s in Europe, including Ireland,
explains the decline of Anglo-Norman power and the English language. It
also reduced free tenants to labourers. This produced a significant return
to England by peasants wishing to avoid greater subjection. The lords in
Ireland were then forced to make concessions to Irish peasants. This
combined with the impact of the plague largely finished off serfdom by
about 1500.

The economy, moreover, had shifted in the 1300s back largely to pasture.
This meant a different form of social organisation to tillage, where
peasants laboured for a lord. Pasture involved a more

The argument of the resident misogynists like and Andrew Stewart is
basically because *heterosexual men* attack and kill trans-identified
males, *women* should give up their spaces!

Like the Zionist argument that because white Christian Europeans persecuted
and butchered Jews, *Palestinians* should give up their spaces to Jewish
people and the Zionist project.

The misogynists even copy the Zionist methodology when confronted with
women who resist their space being invaded and taken over. When
Palestinians resist and other people support them, the charge of
"anti-semitism" is hurled.

There is no more reason for women to give up their spaces to
trans-identified males than there is reason for Palestinians to give up
their space to Jewish people.

The fact that some men want women to be punished for the sins of the
straight men who bash and kill trans people simply reveals a strong strand
of misogyny. make the women pay!

Andrew claims "bathroom bans lead to sexual assault of trans/genderqueer
people". Not women's problem or responsibility. That's men's problem and
responsibility. The fact that a few people here are trying to put this
onto women reveals a real problem in their attitude to women.

And anyone who thinks we are dealing with a liberation movement needs to
open their eyes and smell the misogyny. Indeed, violent misogyny permeates
trans-identified male attitudes to women. Rape threats, incitement to
stabbings, murder threats etc are documented in the hundreds.

And, again, our resident misogynists' response is to ignore. excuse and/or
enable this violent misogyny. Or they try to shift the goalposts by
talking about anti-trans violence, ignoring the fact that it is not
gender-critical women who are threatening rape, stabbings, beatings, murder
against trans - it is trans-identified males threatening it and inciting it
against women.

A small sample of the violent misogyny routinely directed at women by
trans-identified males:
https://rdln.wordpress.com/2019/11/06/the-leftists-enabling-violent-misogyny/e

Then, of course, there's the rapey entitlement culture of men claiming to
be lesbians and harassing and denouncing actual lesbians who are not
interested in them and their penises.

Fortunately, there is a growing response on the left against the new
misogyny. Some expressions of this on the internet are the Gender Critical
Left group of Marxists, anarcho-syndicalists and left social democrats on
facebook, a large percentage of which are women; the Gay Men Address Gender
Identity group on fb; the LGB Gender Critical Radicals on fb; and others.

I won't be engaging with the likes of Andrew Steward, and any other
misogynists here. With their super-entitled demands on women they do tend
to expose themselves.

MM wrote: "When people ostensibly on the left start insisting that others

time to accept that they're not interested in good-faith dialogue."

And when gender-critical feminists refuse to obey the demands of people
like MM to accept trans definition of who is a woman they face getting
sacked. Maya Forstater wasn't sacked for denying the existence of
discrimination, of course; she was sacked for, in her own time, refusing to
accept the terminology that biological males are women.

The level of misogyny that is being exposed in this is extraordinary. See,
for instance, the violent, disturbed poison that gender-critical women have
to put up with every day from a layer of males whop identify as trans
women. Needless to say there is no equivalent of this fascistic tirade
being directed by gender-critical women against trans-identified men.

https://rdln.wordpress.com/2019/11/06/the-leftists-enabling-violent-misogyny/

Instead of demanding that women get to the back of the bus and shut up, the
progressive position is to demand straight men stop assaulting
trans-identified males.

*This article is about competing rights and material reality. It is timely
as a British employment court has ruled against Maya Forstater who took a

The front-stabbers won and the back-stabbers lost.

It's extraordinary how much emotion a lot of the left has invested in the
Labour Party, the #2 team for British Imperialism Ltd.

The reality is that the British working class in the 21st century has a lot
less investment in the British LP than the left does. Unskilled workers in
particular.

The LP lost the working class in Scotland a few years ago, a country where
Labour had been the dominant party for a century. Now the LP has just one
seat left in Scotland - yep, one! They are only the third party, miles
behind the SNP and well behind the Tories.

In England, including some of the most hard-core old working class areas,
they trail the Tories.

The only country in Britain where they still have the most seats is Wales,
the smallest and less populous country within Britain. Even there the
Tories are catching them up.

Meanwhile the British state is facing potential problems in the part of
Ireland they still rule over. The parties favouring a united Ireland now
have more seats than the parties that support British rule. (That's
potentially also a problem for the southern ruling class in Ireland because
they don't want a united Ireland any more than the Brits do.)

Who knows, the days of the so-called 'United Kingdom of Britain and
Northern Ireland' might be numbered. We might end up with the 'United
Kingdom of England and Wales'.

Mass protests are occurring across Iran, taking place in over 100 cities.
The protests have been sparked by the government’s cutting of fuel
subsidies, a measure which caused fuel prices to double overnight.

Mass protests are hardly new in Iran, but there is an important difference
between these protests and previous periods of upsurge against the
government . In the past people have protested for. . .

This week 800 unionised bus drivers in Auckland were suspended from work
after they refused to collect fares as part of a campaign of industrial
action. Drivers working for Auckland’s largest bus company NZ Bus are
asking for more pay and better working conditions after being offered only
a 2% pay rise.

With NZ Bus suspending union members and cancelling services around 70,000
commuters each day are being affected during the busiest time of the year.
The suspension is aimed at coercing the drivers, but the mood of the
workers is to continue to hold the line.

They are fighting a long-running problem of low wages and split shifts. Bus
drivers are paid on average $22 an hour and have unpaid downtime during
their shifts. They start work early in the morning and can finish 12 hours
later without making the equivalent of the minimum wage. . .

The RUC used CS gas for the first time on August 12, 1969, in the Bogside
of Derry. It invisibly covered the streets and seeped into every room of
the houses, causing choking, vomiting and irritation of the eyes and skin.
The British Army first used the gas in April 1970 when they
indiscriminately fired off 104 gas canisters in Ballymurphy in West Belfast
during a night of rioting.

Máirín Keegan of Saor Eire suggested to Butch Roche, an original member of
Peoples Democracy, that they mount a publicity campaign to highlight the
use of CS gas, because they were convinced it had done considerable harm.
She also acquired two CS gas canisters that were photographed with the
intention of using them in the publicity campaign. Roche decided on a
symbolic action that wouldn’t injure anyone but bring home to the British
public and establishment the impact of its use against the civilian
population in Belfast and Derry.

On July 22, 1970, Butch arrived in London with the two CS gas canisters.
The next day he entered the Public Gallery of the House of Commons, with a
newspaper to cover the bulkiness in his pockets. He threw the gas grenades onto
the floor of the House, shouting “if it’s all right for Derry and Belfast,
it is all right for here. How do you like it”? . . .

I wrote this some years back, but various revisionists and
pro-imperialists, including ones claiming to be left-wing, still meddle the
nonsense.

In the early 1900s the national question affected every movement for social
change in Ireland. For the labour movement, particularly those who sought
to lead it in a revolutionary direction, the national question posed the
greatest challenge. If the goal of the working class, in the view of the
revolutionaries, was a social revolution and the establishment of a
workers’ republic, how should the political question of British rule in
Ireland be approached?

Was the road forward for the workers in Ireland, a colonial possession of
an imperial power, the same as that in Britain? What was the relationship
between economic and political issues? Was the job of revolutionaries
simply to provide an analysis of capitalism and/or counsel workers to be
more militant in struggling for better wages and conditions? Was a working
class-based or, at least, working class-led, revolution possible? Given the
weakness of the working class – due to the historical underdevelopment of
capitalism in Ireland and the sectarian divisions which stemmed from this
underdevelopment – were there other social forces which could be drawn to
the workers’ side in a struggle for the revolutionary transformation of
society?

The response of Irish revolutionary socialists at the time, above all James
Connolly, has been a point of debate ever since. In particular, the rise of
historical revisionism has led to the resurrection of the theme that
Connolly abandoned. . .

Last week France passed a law that equates anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism.
It is based on a definition
 of
anti-Semitism that includes criticism of Israel such as: “Denying the
Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the
existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor,” or “by applying
double standards to Israel not demanded of any other nation”.

How do Palestinians struggle against their second class status within
Israel and the continued occupation of the West Bank and Gaza now? This law
targets the Palestinian resistance and aims to delegitimise any challenge
to Zionism.

Similar laws are evident in other parts of Europe and in the US. The US has
27 states that oppose the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaign
against Israel, on the premise that the campaign is anti-Semitic.

The wording of the French legislation includes a definition of Israel “as a
collective composed of Jewish citizens.” This gives credence to the
Nation-State Law in Israel which enshrines the second class status of
Palestinians and other non-Jews in Israel.

As Haaretz writer Gideon Levy asks

” If Israel is a collective of Jewish citizens, what are the Palestinian
citizens? And what are. . . .

“The magistrate in his summing up said that he had no doubt whatsoever that
I was politically involved. This should stand to my benefit at a later

Frank Keane, who is now over eighty years of age, was born on May 8, 1936

Frank Keane was O/C of the Dublin brigade of the IRA in the early 1960s.

In the late 1960s he, several other prominent former activists in the
Dublin IRA and some young supporters of the Fourth International formed
Saor Eire, a political-military organisation dedicated to fighting for
Irish national liberation and socialism. . .

Saor Eire would subsequently be much maligned. But its attempt to combine
the military and political aspects of struggle and national liberation and
socialism were impressive.

In the previous chapter we saw how the pan-nationalist front for national
independence came apart at the end of 1921. The southern nationalist
bourgeoisie, the old Unionist elite, the Catholic Church hierarchy and
sections of the middle class who aspired to become capitalists supported
the Treaty because it gave them what they wanted – an Irish state over
which they had a substantial degree of control. (In the case of a section
of the old Unionist elite, Although it was less than what they hoped for –
many of them would have preferred not to have partition – it was a far
better option than continued struggle with Britain. Prolonged struggle
tended to undermine the old order and throw into question even new
nationalist sources of authority when these were used to uphold the old
order – such as republican courts and police which sided with Unionist
landowners against pro-republican small farmers and agricultural
labourers. Workers had mobilised around the political issue of
independence and undertaken increasingly militant struggles around economic
issues. While workers’ struggles around these latter issues tended to be
localised and spontaneous, the widespread seizures of workplaces
nevertheless by their very nature raised, in at least an embryonic form,
the question of what a truly free Ireland might look like. In particular,
they raised the issue of which class or classes would rule the new Ireland
which was emerging during the war for independence.

In June 1922 the Third International, which had maintained a great deal of
interest in Ireland and which had been kept informed of events by both
British and Irish revolutionaries – amongst them James Connolly’s young
son, Roddy – issued a statement declaring: “After all the efforts to
maintain its domination by force of arms had been frustrated by the heroic,
self-sacrificing defence of the Irish people, it was obliged to come to an
understanding with the Irish bourgeoisie. For the semblance of an
independent Irish Free State the representatives of the Irish capitalists –
Collins, Griffith and co – sacrificed the fruits of a long and successful
struggle, and received in return as a Judas reward, the right to exploit
the Irish workers together with the British bourgeoisie.”[1]

It is my contention that this is a fundamentally correct statement of what
happened in Ireland with the adoption of the Treaty and the establishment

In 1957, E M Forster wrote of his greatest work:

“The India described in *A Passage to India* no longer exists either
politically or socially. Change had begun even at the time the book was
published (1924) and during the following quarter of a century it
accelerated enormously … there was the termination of the British Raj;
there was the division of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan and the
entry of them both into world affairs; there was the abolition of the
Native states; there was the weakening of purdah and of caste; there was
the increase of industrialism. All these changes occurred in the 1940s,
and with them has come the double impact on the peninsula of the USA and
the USSR – two countries which are not mentioned in the novel at all.”

The subcontinent has changed even more since 1957, yet, as Robert McCrum
wrote in *The Guardian *in 2014, “*A Passage to India* stands as a
strangely timeless achievement.”

Forster’s achievement was reached after. . .

*Imposition of feudalism*

He notes that the Anglo-Norman conquest resulted in the division of Ireland
into Gaelic and Anglo-Norman regions. While the boundaries and interactions
were fluid, they possessed different social structures*. . .*

In 1945 Japan’s collapse appeared total. Its military were defeated and
disarmed and much of its industry was destroyed. Twenty-five percent of
the country’s wealth and $20billion in overseas assets were wiped out.[5]
Apart from the maintenance of the titular position of emperor, much of its
political power structure was also demolished. How did it manage to
recover so quickly and become the second most important economic power in
the world?

Takatoshi Ito sees Japan’s phenomenal growth from the perspective of
conventional supply side/demand side economics.[6] For him, “growth can
occur through capital accumulation, through increases in working hours and
employment, or through technological progress that enhances the
productivity of existing capital and labour.” The relative importance of
each of these factors is analysed by measuring how much they grew by and
then relating this to overall growth. Not surprisingly, the conclusion is
drawn that in Japan “capital accumulation was more important than labour”
and that “More than half of Japan’s growth is attributed to ‘technological
progress and residuals’.”[7] At the same time, Ito sees a drawback to this
approach, namely, “It does not offer any explanation as to why those
factors behaved as they did.”[8] As he notes, it simply raises a series of
other questions. these include the source of finance for the large
increase in capital stock, whether the particularly high rate of
technological progress is attributable merely to ‘catching up’ with the
West, and the role the government played in achieving high levels of
growth. These are certainly important, but they do not by themselves go to
the heart of the issue.

It's an interesting example of how far workers have been pushed back in the
intervening century. . .

"Described by Lenin as the world’s first Red Army, the Irish Citizen Army
was formed by members of the Irish Transport and General Workers Union and
other trade unionists in Dublin in August 1913. Socialist and therefore
also republican, the ICA was not, however, the first working class
paramilitary organisation to be formed in Ireland in Ireland in the early
1900s. That honour goes to Fianna Eireann, a predominantly working class
youth organisation founded by Constance, Countess Markievicz who would go
on to be a key figure in the workers’ militia.

*The Fianna*

Markievicz, a militant left-wing republican, was moved to form the Fianna
in August 1909 for two reasons.

One was that, while new to Irish republicanism – she had thrown herself
into it just the year before – she had already decided that any serious
political movement for Irish freedom would, sooner or later, have to
confront Britain in arms. Her reading of Irish history had taught her that
if you built a serious political movement, at some point the British state
would confront you with its military force. Unless you were armed and
prepared to fight, your movement would end in ignominy, confusion and
demoralisation. . ."

This is the third of the synopses of parts of the opening chapter of John
Smith’s Imperialism in the 21st Century (New York, Monthly Review Press,
2016). The synopsis and commentary below is written by Phil Duncan.

Unlike the humble cup of coffee and t-shirt that we looked at in the first
two synopses, iPhones are technologically complex. While the simplicity of
the first two commodities might help blind us to the complex social
relations of exploitation which produce them, in the case of a commodity
like the iPhone it can be their dazzling sophistication which does that job.

The most important aspect of John’s book is that it lays bare precisely
these relations. This, inherently, involves exposing how these relations
of exploitation – in particular the super-exploitation of Third World
workers by First World capital – is hidden by the way. . . .

MM's support for an attempt within the British Labour Party to prevent gay
and bisexual women and men is risible to the point of being downright
anti-gay.

There have been a series of violent threats against people organising the
new Lesbian Gay Bisexual Alliance and attempts to threaten the employment
of a leading member, a black lesbian lawyer.

These attacks come overwhelmingly from white heterosexual males.

As John Edmundson noted, the claims of 'transphobia' are used in the same
way claims of 'anti-semitism' are used by zionists to stop critical
thinking about Israel. Homosexual and bisexual women and men have every
right to organise and also to have same-sex involvements. Lesbians have
every right to say 'No' to penis and the attitudes of straight males
demanding entry to lesbian spaces and to break the 'cotton ceiling' are
downright rapey.

We've already seen this at work in the Yaniv case in Canada.

Happily there is now starting to be serious pushback against the New
Misogyny and the New Homophobia, complete with all its threats of rape,
murder, lynching, plus its super-active and super-asggressive
no-platforming of people ranging from Germaine Greer to Cindy Sheehan to
Helen Steel.

When the poor finally explode in frustration and seize what they want,
police deal to it. With clubs, if needed, with guns. Looting riots are rare
in New Zealand, most recent was in 1932. Unemployed Aucklanders, provoked
by police bashing their speaker, smashed shop windows and stole. In the
ensuing repression hundreds were hurt or arrested.

In ‘normal’ times deprived people are mostly controlled by other means,
like words. Political spin is something authority has invested in, because
it works. Used skillfully, words can deflect and defuse people’s anger.
Pressing social problems can seem more manageable with an appropriate label.

One of today’s most effective labels is Child Poverty.

Just uttered by itself, Child Poverty sounds . . .

It seems very odd for someone to claim there are just vague accusations
about violent treats against gender-critical feminists. They are all over
the internet. Indeed, months ago, I pointed him to the Peak Trans site
which has documented hundreds upon hundreds of them.

In Britain the situation is so bad that scores of left and trade union
activist have released a statement calling for it to stop;
https://rdln.wordpress.com/2019/10/03/british-trade-union-and-political-activists-defend-womens-right-to-speak-organise/

When gender-critical feminists put forward their views they are demonised
by the lie that they are 'transphobes', 'terfs' and then it's all on - rape
threats, death threats, hacking up into bits threats. beating with bats
threats, lynchings threats - who's like the KKK then*? -* attempts to
remove them from social media, get them fired, get them visited by police,
get them deplatformed and on and on.

The violent misogynists also vent poison at gender-critical gay and
transexual activists. They hate transexuals who reject their male
entitledness, and they're hostile to gay men who don't like their
homophobia. Fortunately more gay men are starting to solidarise with
women.

https://rdln.wordpress.com/2019/08/13/woke-misogyny-and-homophobia-a-gay-critique-of-trans-ideology/

Of course, no genuine liberation movement spouts such hideous, violent
misogyny. It's a bit of a give away. . .

I see the misogynist men's entitlement brigade is now turning their bile on
Cindy Sheehan, so she can expect the full treatment. And the woke men will
turn a blind eye.

So, first women aren't allowed to organise and now gay activist are
attacked for organising.

The usual attacks have been made on members of the LGBA - trying to get gay

Meanwhile the woke left goes along with the misogyny and homophobia, just

There is certainly country music and country music.

There is the ultra-commercialised pap and there is real country music,

About ten years ago, the largest chunk of music I was buying was country

I buy is from north-west Africa, especially Tuareg rock (aka desert blues
aka desert rock) but also other stuff from Mali, Senegal and other places
in West Africa.

About 20 years ago a mate of mine gave me an album of country music from
the 1920s and 1930s and I was struck by how a bunch of the songs were as
much blues as country. And I don't mean they were country-blues, I mean
you literally couldn't tell whether the performer was black and performing
blues or white and performing country.

The Carters were excellent, especially the women. Bill Monroe is bloody
good and I found his biography fascinating. Devoutly religious but he
lived in a relationship without the 'benefit' of marriage. He also had a
black musician his band at the height of Jim Crow and when they were
touring they would drive around looking for a decent place for the guy to
stay.

There are so many really good country artists from "the old days", who
combined generally conservative (formal) social views with some sort of
rough class consciousness. And today there is a substantial alt-country
scene, with heaps of progressive country artists. Even devoutly religious
folk like Julie Miller and Buddy Miller tend to be socially progressive.
And then there are a host of alt.country people who aren't religious at
all, like Lucinda Williams.

I guess my favourite country music is bluegrass, the High Lonesome sound is
just beautiful.

And, of course, we have the likes of Emmylou, Steve Earle and a whole heap
of others.

Hell, although the TV music-drama 'Nashville' could be schmaltzy, it had
some great music in it. And the themes it deal with (like the
homosexuality of one of the main characters) showed just much has changed
in the country music mainstream even.

People who hate country music are really narrow-minded, and often very
ignorant about both the history of country music and where a lot of it is
at today.

True country music is like a poor white version of the blues, another form
of music I love very much.

Sadly, this piece of satire is pretty accurate!

by The Council of Disobedient Women

In a press release today Massey University announced it has decided to
rebrand and reorientate after struggling to be a University for grown-ups.
For some time the University has wanted to be a safe play space for
wee-woke-misogynists who have been really badly triggered by *words* and
*ideas*. We received this statement today. . .

In the late 1800s NZ was called "The little Prussia of the South Pacific"
and for good reason. It tried to build a little empire, with its capital
in Wellington.

Mostly, the NZ ruling class lost out to bigger imperialists in Europe and
the USA.

But it wasn't for lack of trying.

Yet illusions in NZ imperialism remain widespread, even on the left.

This was written over a decade ago by Yassamine Mather, a prominent figure
in the Fedayeen (Minority) in Iran, who now lives in Britain.

"The month of September is known in the Iranian exile calendar as the month
to commemorate one of the biggest mass executions of political prisoners in
the Islamic republic’s period of power. This year is the 20th anniversary
of the massacre in 1988.* The figures are very inaccurate, but I think the
government admits that probably 15,000 socialists, communists and some from
the Mujahedin were killed in prison. This was ayatollah Khomeini taking his
revenge on the Iranian left following his defeat in the war against Saddam
Hussein.

"These were not the only working class partisans killed in the prisons of
the islamic republic, of course: thousands had already been executed since
1980 and many more died in Kurdistan. What is sad about this is not just
that so many thousands gave their lives for socialism and Marxism, but
there have been very few lessons learned from. . ."

This is an interview I did with Tommy McKearney back in 2009.

The British introduced internment in the north of Ireland in August 1971,
the same day Tommy received his high school A-level results. He joined the
Irish Republican Army, later becoming OC of the East Tyrone Brigade of the
IRA.

Captured, he served 16 years in prison, including being on the
blanket protest, the dirty protest and the 1980 hunger strike.

After his release in 1993, he became a prominent critic of the Provos shift
to bourgeois nationalism. Tommy himself became a socialist writer and a
key figure in the class struggle-oriented new Independent Workers Union.

On August 5th, 2019 Harland and Wolff went into administration after almost
160 years of continuous operations in Belfast. Many column inches were
subsequently filled with regurgitated pap about the building of The
Titanic, the iconic yellow cranes that dominate the Belfast skyline and a
generally sanitised history of the shipyard.

For their part, the workers and the trade unions rightly called for the
nationalisation of the company - a call that will almost certainly be
ignored by a Thatcher-channeling Boris Johnson.

In the month since the closure it has been reported that the administrators
are considering a number of offers for the company. These offers appears
to relate to the possible future manufacturing of wind turbines and other
renewable energy technology, which has been the core business of Harland
and Wolff for the best part of the last decade. The fate of the once
mighty shipyard, and the valuable lands upon which it stands, will soon be
decided by the stroke of an accountant’s pen.

Wind turbines, not ships, have been the core business of Harland and Wolff
for a number of years.
Wind turbines, not ships, have been the core business of Harland and Wolff
for a number of years.

Regardless of what that final decision will be, the placing of Harland and
Wolff into administration has huge symbolic importance in the context of
the slow gradual death of unionism as a political force in Ireland - a
process which cannot be understood or judged in the timescale of months,
years or even decades. Instead it must be measured in quarter, half and
full centuries.

The roots of today’s unionism lie in the brutal plantation of Ulster, which
began in. . .

*Over the next week or two we will be running three synopses of parts of
the opening chapter of John Smith’s *Imperialism in the 21st Century (New
York, Monthly Review Press, 2016)*. The synopsis and commentary below is
written by Phil Duncan.*

Marx began *Capital* not with a sweeping historical survey but with an
examination of the humble commodity. He did this because the commodity is
the cell of capitalism and within a single commodity can be found the key
contradictions of capitalism as a whole socio-economic system of
production. Especially the contradiction between value (which takes the
form of exchange-value) and use-value.

In his work on imperialism today, John Smith begins in a similar way. Not
with the humble, single generic commodity but with three specific
commodities: the cup of coffee, the t-shirt and the iPhone. He chooses
these three because they are good examples of the globalisation of
commodity production today. Specifically, these are commodities produced
in the Third World and largely sold in the First World, and the companies
that exercise domination over their production, distribution and exchange
are First World companies.

They are emblematic of the internationalisation of commodity production,
distribution and exchange.

US political opinion against China has two solid bases. The first is the
longstanding racist and protectionist sentiment in the white working class;
the second is a more recent anxiety about China’s economic prowess in
America’s ruling elite. This article notes some historical aspects of
anti-Chinese racism in the white working class, part of a wider racial
prejudice that persists today, and also examines the more contemporary
aspects of the worries that China gives America by looking at the example
of Huawei, China’s flagship telecommunications and electronics company.
Anyone paying attention to President Trump’s tweets to his domestic
audience will be aware that there is a close connection between the two
issues. . .

Constance Markievicz led a remarkable life, traversing the social and
political landscape from daughter of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy to
bohemian artist in Paris and London to a founding leader of the workers'
militia known as the Irish Citizen Army in Dublin and the main founder of
the first republican paramilitary organisation of 20th century Ireland (Na
Fianna Eireann). She was second-in-command of the insurrectionary forces
at Stephen's Green in the centre of Dublin during the 1916 armed Rebellion
and sentenced to death for her part. Because she was a woman, her sentence
(death by firing squad) was commuted to penal servitude to life.

Markievicz was James Connolly's closest political co-worker and personal
friend and attempted to continue the struggle for a worker's republic.
Markievicz also trained the first paramilitary group (the Fianna) in how
to use weapons and blow stuff up. She herself was often well-armed so that
Connolly once described her as "looking like a walking advertisement for an
enterprising small arms manufacturer".

In November 1918 she became the first woman elected to the British
parliament, standing as an Irish republican and socialist. She became the
first female cabinet minister in Western Europe, serving as minister of
labour in the underground Irish parliament. She opposed the 1921 Treaty
and fought on the anti-Treaty side in the civil war. Her speech in the
Dublin parliament against the Treaty was the only one which drew clear
class lines. She died in 1927 of complications arising from peritonitis.

Below are just some of her writings that I collected back in the late 1980s
and which I began sticking up on The Irish Revolution blog when I started
it in 2011.

Starting with the statement issued by James Larkin's Workers Union of
Ireland upon Markievicz's death:
https://theirishrevolution.wordpress.com/2011/09/21/larkins-workers-union-on-constance-markievicz/

Markievicz speech in the Irish parliament against the 1921 Treaty:

Markievicz speech in the Irish parliament in favour of women's franchise
(the Treatyites were thinking of delaying women's franchise because they
feared women would be majority opposed to the Treaty as the the vast
majority of female republican activists were):

1923 Markievicz pamphlet *What Irish Republicans Stand For:*
https://theirishrevolution.wordpress.com/2018/02/04/constance-de-markievicz-what-irish-republicans-stand-for/
(This was written not long after the conclusion of the civil war)

Below is the oration she gave on the second anniversary of the murder of
two Fianna lads by the Free State regime:

Two articles on the conditions of women in English jails:
https://theirishrevolution.wordpress.com/2011/07/13/conditions-of-women-in-english-jails-2/
