LGBTQ issues is perhaps unsurprising, seeing as this follows on the
heels of a ban on depictions of homosexuality on television. It remains
to be seen as how wide-sweeping or strictly enforced this ban will be,
seeing as some Chinese LGBTQ filmmakers who release their work online
have reported not having their content taken down at present.

Blued, China’s largest gay dating app, which has 27 million users,
received a multi-million RMB investment from the state-run Beijing News

for their LGBTQ children, the Chinese state apparently disliking parents

The march began in front of the Executive Yuan at 3:30 and, after
marching for an hour down Zhongshan South Road, finished on Ketagalan
Boulevard in front of the Presidential Residence at 4:30, where a number
of tents and a stage for musical performances had been set up. The two
central demands of demonstrators, which served as protest chants during
the rally and were also printed on signs handed out to participants were
for an end to the Asia Cement mine and reform of the mining industry,
but more general demands underlying the demonstration were the call for
broader environmental protections in Taiwan and social justice for
Taiwanese indigenous.

> Apart from speeches and musical performances, demonstrators set off
smoke bombs and played sounds of mining in front of the Executive Yuan
to represent the loud noises which are constantly produced by the Asia
Cement mine, in spite of the constant disruption to the lives of
indigenous residents living nearby. On Ketagalan Boulevard,
demonstrators formed the shape of the island of Taiwan, citing recently
deceased director Chi Po-Lin’s documentary Beyond Beauty: Taiwan From
Above, and the need to defend protect Taiwan’s environment as a whole.
Participating organizations include Third Force parties such as the New
Power Party, Social Democratic Party, Green Party, and Trees Party, a
number of environmental organizations as the Green Citizen Action
Alliance, the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association, and other
organizations. The main organizer of the demonstration was the Citizens
of the Earth, Taiwan.

> This would certainly seem to be the case with Asia Cement’s mine in
Taroko National Park, in which suspicions have been raised about the
legitimacy of the documentation with which Asia Cement justifies
ownership over the land, and in which the Truku people have been unable
to achieve the restoration of their land rights because ROC government
actors have shunted responsibility for who has jurisdiction over the
land between the local, county, and central government. In this light,
Asia Cement’s development in Taroko National Park goes back to the long
history of indigenous being forced off of their lands by Han Taiwanese,
seeing as it is very likely that any “documentation” from several
decades ago supposedly proving that the Truku people agreed to give up
their lands to Asia Cement may have been bound up with forcible coercion
from government or commercial actors. Accordingly, the legal case filed
against Asia Cement has lasted over fifteen years without firm
resolution, including past attempts by the government to pass off a
false resolution to the issue, low settlement payouts to affected
residents of the area even in cases of deaths caused by accidents from
the mine, and pollution to the drinking water of local residents.

nationalistic Chinese netizens scoffing western critics of Donald Trump
on issues as immigration, minorities, LGBTQ, and the environment as
naive members of the “white left”. Obviously, it is that for Chinese
nationalists, the greatest obstacle in the way of China’s global rise is
America. But nationalists of all stripe think alike and they recognize a
kindred spirit in Trump.

ostensibly status as a “Communist” country, scoff at those in China who
concern themselves with the same issues taken up by the international

should be the primary concern for China today--attempts at strengthening
national power. They think this to be true of any other country, as

by Chinese nationalists, whether these are members of the so-called
“white Left” or individuals in China who take up such issues, But one
also suspects that this sense of anxiety also ties into the fact that
concern with immigrants, minorities, LGBTQ, the environment and similar
social issues are never specifically national issues. The
internationalist left has a way of cooperating beyond borders in a way
that nationalists not only find foolish and irrational, but also
probably fears to some extent.

nationalisms are cut from the same cloth; forms of civic nationalism
tend to be rather harmless, even if there always remains the danger that
relatively mild civic forms of nationalism may unpredictably transform

China, in which the claim of the Chinese government to be a socialist
government sometimes leads “leftism” to be associated with Chinese
nationalism. But whether across the world or just within the Sinosphere,
right-wing nationalists tend to think similarity. For example, while
Chinese nationalists find themselves at loggerheads with Hong Kong
independence advocates who embrace a right-wing form of Hong Kong
nationalism exclusionary of Chinese on ethnic grounds, they, too are
sometimes dismissive of the “leftards” they think of too hung up on
issues as social equality or social justice. One can draw similar
comparison to Chinese nationalists scoffing at the “white left”. And
such individuals also see common ground with Trump, or the tide of
right-wing separatism sweeping Europe with, for example, some, more
right-leaning advocates of Hong Kong independence praising Brexit in the
UK and seeing this as a model for Hong Kong to withdraw from China in a
manner which will serve to expunge Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong.
