With the low unemployment, something has to give in the US, and that something is a tendency towards increased militancy on the job. The most noticeable event of this was the teacher strikes throughout the US. By no coincidence, most (if not all) of these strikes have been in Republican-controlled states (W. Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky). That's because it's in these states that the budget, including for education, has been slashed the most severely. Now there is a follow up to those strikes in that many of the incumbent Republicans who voted against measures that would raise teacher pay are being voted out in their primaries. This doesn't mean that the Democrats will necessarily retake those seats, but it means a beginning of a shift away from the "small government" craze. In other words, the beginning of a shift in the consciousness.
