Actually, I had no idea this trend was so pervasive among white Americans. And I agree with your reasoning : they hate Obama just because he's black. Even though they won't admit it, and even though a lot of them won't even consciously realize this. If Roosvelt rose from the grave and became president, he would still have aroused wide-spread animosity and Fascist opposition, but surely not quite as virulent as that espoused by the "birthers". I don't live in the US, so I can't really get a feel of what's going on there.
