Marx & Engels, while generally favorable to free trade, weren't always as gung-ho about it as Engels was in Anti-Durhing. In other writings, they recognized that under certain conditions that infant industry arguments for protectionism did have some strength. And Marx at times advanced the argument that if Ireland were to win its independence that one of the economic advantages it would experience would be the freedom to impose protectionist policies that would enable it to industrialize itself.
