The summary at the beginning of this article is fair enough but the
reflections after it (or, perhaps, the way they've been edited) would imply
to the casual reader that the interviewees are suggesting that Islamists--
rather than the regime that is using Islamism as its justification to jail,
torture, and kill all dissidents -- is the problem.
When I lived in Egypt, albeit briefly, anti-Islamist / "War on Terrorism"
sort of rhetoric was the dominant rhetoric of the society. It was expressed
by every person on every street corner, on every TV station, in every part
of the society. People stopped talking to me when I told them I was against
the dictator, believing I must be an "Ikhwani" (a member of the Muslim
Brotherhood). There were people who still supported the Muslim Brotherhood
(even though I wasn't one of them) but they were very quiet, out of a very
real fear that they could be taken away.
So editing the reflections to imply that the regime engaged in surveillance
suppression is somehow connected to the Islamists is incredibly
manipulative. It is true that the Islamists don't like secular leftists --
and why would they, given that much of the secular left went along with the
army's power grabbing when they believed (naively) that it would benefit
them. But the Islamists, let alone backward-minded anonymous Muslim types,
are not the ones responsible for the current wave of repression and state
violence.
