Since the onset of COVID-19, women’s careers, especially in the humanities, have beenincreasingly undervalued <https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/20/us/women-economy-jobs-coronavirus-gender.html>. We’re beingdisproportionately dismissed <https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2020/05/09/women-unemployment-jobless-coronavirus/>from jobs, asked to work without pay, and expected to care for our children and families before ourselves. Some women authors, notably in Oxford University’s May 2020Tolkien Symposium <https://tolkienlecture.org/>, have discussed whether or not writing is an appropriate way to give care, defending their stories as nourishment.

It’s as though we’ve wound back the clocks to Victorian England.
