iew_interval()
Maybe a better implementation should exclude minor locations where
major locations are defined.

Hi Jeff,
how about allowing units to be set as meters when calling Basemap.drawmapscale ?
And maybe adding the keyword "format" for formatting numeric values.

Hi,
how about choosing the default value of 'byhour' for HourLocator and
AutoDateLocator to range(0,24,interval) (instead of range(0,24)), to
force ticks to start at midnight even when 'interval' is different
from 1?

Therefore, alpha doesn't work for contours (filled or not).
Nota: If "collection.set_alpha" is used, it fails with line contouring
because self._edgecolors is an empty list.
I hope it can help.

It's easy to do it manually once you now all needed attributes, but it
would be better to have it natively integrated.
