This line:

should actually be
ARCH_FLAGS="-arch i386 -arch x86_64"
(notice the extra space after i386. it wouldn't build for me without this
fix.)

set to MacOSX.
I would be happy if someone who's had similar problems to the ones I
have had could test this procedure and see if it works for them as
well.

Thanks for the suggestion Jeff. I have been dealing with the same problem.
I found the makefile in
/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/PythonX.Y/config/Makefile
from an EPD install. Is this makefile the template used whenever I build a
package against python using distutils?
